New Xbox One/PC Features Not in Response to PS4's Lead, Microsoft Says

"Sony is doing incredibly well with the PS4..."

At E3 2016 last month, Microsoft made some major announcements related to its platform strategy going forward. One of these is a new feature called Xbox Play Anywhere, which will bring Xbox One and PC closer than before.

Now, Xbox boss Phil Spencer has spoken up to say Microsoft's efforts to partially unite console and PC are not in response to Sony's commanding lead in the Xbox One vs. PlayStation 4 race.

ReCore will be the first Xbox Play Anywhere game
ReCore will be the first Xbox Play Anywhere game

"Sony is doing incredibly well with the PS4 but they're doing something fundamentally different from us," he told The Guardian. "We're not building a strategy in response to what they're doing; we're building a response to what I see customers and gamers asking us for."

For its part, Sony's Andrew House recently suggested that the company is not going to follow in Microsoft's footsteps and unite PlayStation 4 and PC.

"I always hesitate to be drawn into discussions of someone else's strategy," he said during a meeting with analysts and investors this month. "I'm more than happy to talk about our own strategy. Yes, there was a big emphasis from the folks at Microsoft on Xbox and PC cross-play. It remains to be seen whether there is latent large consumer demand for that.

"But we don't see it as really effecting or prompting any change in our thought process and strategy," he continued. "We've always tended to believe that a proprietary ecosystem offering a very well crafted, unified client experience is the way to go, and that sort of remains our strategy."

Also in the interview, Spencer said Microsoft is not trying to "turn PC gamers into console gamers or console gamers into PC gamers." The Play Anywhere feature is all about choice and catching up with other forms of media.

"So if you're at school and want to play a couple of rounds of a game and then you go back home and want to continue on your couch, that seems normal," he said. "Every other kind of media--your music, your movies--everything else works that way."

As part of Play Anywhere, users can buy a game digitally on Xbox One and get the PC version free or vice versa. As Spencer mentioned, your progress will move with you wherever you're playing, though there isn't always going to be cross-play support.

Play Anywhere kicks off in September with Mega Man designer Keiji Inafune's ReCore and continues with Forza Horizon 3 later in the month, while October's Gears of War 4 will also support the feature. Some non-Microsoft games, including We Happy Few and Ark: Survival Evolved, are also included in the Play Anywhere catalog.

In other news about Play Anywhere, Microsoft recently cleared up some confusion about the supported games, saying only the ones discussed on stage at E3 are confirmed for the program so far. A blog post from Microsoft previously stated that that all future Microsoft-published games would be Play Anywhere titles.

Why would anyone think they are related? MS doesn't stand to gain any advantage in the console war by doing what they are doing with PC. It's not like PC gamers are going to go out and buy Xbox Ones and close the sales gap because of what MS is doing in the PC space. And it's not like Xbox One owners are going to buy another Xbox One because of these new features either. What a strange article.

@bdrtfm: You're thinking too literally, but that's not how companies like MS think. They think about stuff like building their brand and generating a buzz. I'm a PC gamer, but it's possible I can personally increase Xbox One game/console sales if I buy PC/X1 exclusives on PC, enjoy them, and then talk about them to other gamers.

For example, if you go watch a new movie at the theater and say you love it. It doesn't mean I'll pay for 3D or full price to go see it. I may not even go to a matinee, but just you telling me how much you enjoyed it might convince me to buy it on BD or a digital download when it releases. This type of thing goes so deep I would never even need to see the movie to increase sales. Somebody else might be going and then I say "I heard [insert movie here] was good" and then I convince somebody else to watch it because of what you originally said. The idea is to get more people talking about the MS brand and specifically about MS products that relate to Xbox One. We won't see lesser Xbox games on PC. I would bet anything it will only be for games that are expected to do well and get people talking about Xbox One exclusives, which is all they are if you're not interested in PC gaming.

When you add in all the streamers who play games and especially big names who don't even touch console games, you can understand how Microsoft can make Xbox money off PC gamers.

@PS2fweak: @PS2fweak: Also, don't forget development costs. They get to "spread" the revenue onto PC on their store for that version, bringing in money that would've normally been restricted to the Xbox version. A bonus revenue stream. With little cost involved in 'porting' to Windows 10, as the core kernel is the same Win 10/Dx12 development environment as XB1 -- and, obviously, all games are created on a PC.

Plus, no concern for boxed sales (and costs) for the Win 10 version as it's all digital via Windows Store. Also, the marketing takes care of itself (sort of like a 2 for 1) with MS shoveling plenty of PR/promo into the Xbox version and it all bleeds over into the Windows 10 version in terms of media coverage.

@PS2fweak: Good points, I never thought of how they could leverage Windows to fuel Xbox sales via word of mouth between friends with different gaming preferences.

It's a console war, everything you do is in response to your competitor. They try to separate them self's from each other but there really not fundamentally different.

@YohanDeEmercer: Which would be true if MS was entirely focused on Xbox but it isn't. It has much larger and much more successful divisions to consider. Making sure Windows stays the top home and office OS is much more important than making sure the Xbox is the most successful console.

@pspearman: yep! And it seems a bit hard to let go. Right now internal problems seem likely.

Windows 10 exclusive and lack of support for Steam and GOG have further damaged Microsoft. They were already on life support but now the plug has been pulled. Bye bye Microsoft - your days in the sun with the 360 are over!

@Moonco: Bye bye Microsoft? You know the Xbox division turned a profit last quarter despite the price drop of the Xbox one and the 360 sales completely drying up. Now they're releasing a new xbox one and an upgraded console. Sounds to me like Microsoft are doubling down on gaming not bowing out.

@sladakrobot: just use the data from the last 2 gaming gen. There's plenty of examples of what not do do.

Not to mention, if Xbox is not competitive, the end result is bad games in the long run. I feel like the diversity and unique play experience should be preserved.

@codisgod: Microsoft talked about cross-play many months ago, and they talked about a more powerful console several months before announcing Scorpio. This hasn't been a surprise to anyone who's paid enough attention to the news.

@NoisyPepper: yeah we've heard of both sony ,Microsoft and Nintendo's new and upgraded consoles but Microsoft was the only one who announced and fully confirmed theirs at E3 2016 along with the slim console.that was kind of unpredictable i thought they were just announcing the slim this year and the Scorpio next year but i was a bit surprised when they announced the Scorpio and slim at once.

@excelevo: they were working on a sequel to a game and most of the employees weren't informed until the day it was closed thats unpredictable if they were not working on anything for years you can kind of expect the studio getting shut down
