New Xbox Scorpio Console Will Deliver "Really True 4K," Exec Says

Project Scorpio will have graphical fidelity on a level "never seen before" on console, Aaron Greenberg says.

Sony's PlayStation 4 Pro came out last week. Across the fence, Microsoft's Project Scorpio console is slated to arrive in holiday 2017. Now, Xbox executive Aaron Greenberg has discussed the upcoming Xbox console, saying it's capable of delivering "really true 4K."

"This will really bring the most powerful console you've ever seen," Greenberg said at this weekend's Xbox FanFest in Mexico City. "It will bring these really true 4K, really incredible visual games that we've never seen before on the console."

Now Playing: Project Scorpio Reactions at E3 2016

"People who have spent thousands of dollars on a high-end PC are getting that experience. How do we bring that to scale in a console in your living room? That's a big part of what Project Scorpio is about," he added.

Microsoft has said that all of its first-party games will run at a native 4K. "Any games we're making that we're launching in the Scorpio time frame, we're making sure they can natively render at 4K," Microsoft Studios GM Shannon Loftis said in September.

Microsoft announced Project Scorpio at E3 in June, but the company has not offered much in the way of specifics about the console since then. That may not change soon, as Greenberg said Microsoft is saving a good deal of significant reveals about Project Scorpio for 2017.

No Caption Provided

Earlier this month, Xbox engineering lead Mike Ybarra said Project Scorpio will "of course" support backwards compatibility for Xbox 360 games. The console also plays all Xbox One titles. According to Microsoft, there won't be any Project Scorpio-exclusive games--except for virtual reality titles.

Pricing for Project Scorpio has not been announced, but Microsoft has repeatedly referred to it as a "premium" device, so it likely won't be cheap.

Sony's PS4 Pro, which launched on November 10, sells for $400. Microsoft has said Project Scorpio is more powerful than Sony's console by a significant margin.

They will price it at $499-$599. Patcher is correct stating that it is suicide. But MS has the money to play with. Its not a big deal to them. They are cocky and arrogant enough to launch at said prices. Even though the past shows $499-$599 consoles don't sell in the long term. Only to the initial hardcore. We seen it with the PS3.

I personally think its going to come in at the $499 mark.

6 TFLOPs, even paired with a weaker CPU, is ample to handle all the pixel pushing necessary in the GPU to produce a 4K native result.

The real question is, at what image quality level, and what performance?

Thus far they've really been focused on saying, "We asked our Xbox One developers what it would take to bring their games to Scorpio in native 4K, and 6TF was the answer."

That's great and all, but porting an XB1 game straight across from its 900p or 1080p incarnation to 4K isn't exactly difficult with that level of GPU.

That's your 6TF going to work right there on producing the native 4K version.

What I want to know is what sort of image quality presets we're going to see, if the speculated additional VRAM is enough for Ultra or 4K-proof textures, how much detail it can pump out, etc.

Because simply porting across Xbox One games to 4K isn't exactly a miraculous feat of engineering with that much overhead available... nor is it particularly exciting.

If we're simply looking at comprehensive native 4K patches for XB1 games, but still 30fps in the more complex titles and still no hard 1080p/60fps mandate, that's not much of a leap beyond the Pro's strategy.

The 6TF vs. 4.2TF lines up pretty well with 2160p native in Scorpio vs. 1440p to 1800p native on Pro, but doesn't leave a tremendous amount of additional processing heft for extras.

Let's be honest, unless it's $700 and equipped with the highly-doubtful Vega CPU - which is so different from Jaguar as to make seamless compatibility with non-patched XB1 games very difficult (really, compare the two parts - vastly different), it's not going to have a two-fold increase in frame rate.

Being as impartial and unbiased as possible, I'd warn people to keep their expectations in check.

Undeniably, if you want to experience those great exclusives from Microsoft's best first-party teams in their absolute peak form...well, put your Scorpio budget and a couple hundred extra towards a Windows PC.

@clay544888: Well, it's an easily removable component with an individual warranty that, once placed on a motherboard and given some RAM, allows you to do much more than the console equivalent.

I think this gives us good idea how much can be squeezed out of console optimization.

Put together i7 PC with GTX1070 and, while you will have more processing power/TFlops/... than Scorpio, you still don't have system that can be called 4K.

If MS pulls this without major sacrifice in IQ in these 4K games, it is real compliment to console efficiency. And I think they will pull this. Looking at how recent Frostbite games perform well on PS4Pro (article on DF), and how much faster Scorpio should be, 1st party games, properly optimized, should yield great results on Scorpio.

@obsidian_born: I'm guessing you are talking about 2015 Titan X, which was pushing 6.5TFlops.

That is fine, but MS was pushing 60fps for some of their franchises. Forza (not Horizon) and Halo first come to my mind.

I don't think they would dare to reduce these games to 30fps, so their statement about 4K on every first party game is, well... quite a statement.

I don't own Xbox nor am I planning to get one. PS4 and PC combo work better for me. Money I'd have to spend on Scorpio, I will put against new GPU... but still, Scorpio seems to be shaping into quite valiant effort. Respect where one is deserved.

With consoles - It's not about the power .

It's about LOTS OF DIVERSE, REALLY GOOD EXCLUSIVES.

Don't believe me?

@naotasback: This is very true, and for 2017 you're going to need a PS4 or Pro for those exclusives, a Switch for those exclusives, and... a gaming PC for the best Xbox One exclusives.

And Microsoft is perfectly happy with you buying that software to play on Windows and the associated services instead of console. It's all good from their perspective. It all feeds back into the same Xbox ecosystem.

Meanwhile, you also get to use that PC to play the best multiplatform titles at image quality and performance levels well beyond consoles.

So 2017 is a great, great time to get into PC gaming. Combined with the Sony and Nintendo ecosystems, you won't miss a thing and you're playing a pivotal role in the success of Xbox studio game development regardless.

In a way, the die-hard Xbox fanboys care more about the box itself than Microsoft does.

They can sit back and let the fans conduct the console flame wars on their behalf, while reaping the benefits of software and service usage across all the various devices with a variation of Windows OS installed - including PCs and Xboxes.

Just be aware of these facts before you go to war.

I don't like that Microsoft is forcing 4k on all first party games. Even with a 4k TV I always choose the better gameplay option (when available) on the PSpro. I would rather have a smoother game experience with more effects and objects on screen than 4k visuals. It's pointless. HDR is great, but 4k resolution really isn't noticeable when your playing a game where you would normally sit. I hope Microsoft allows developers to decided how they want to use the system (like PS is doing) and not force 4k.

@streamline: Haha. It took me a second. I was thinking "uh, what"? I know where everyone sits. It's the worlds worst superpower. I'd rather talk to fish. Anyway, the statistic is based on TV viewing position (not gaming), so it could be irrelevant, but the average is 9 feet from the screen.

To me it's easier to charge a bunch of money for a new system that hasn't come out yet. With the next gens already out, it's going to be tough to put out at least $599.99 at this point. Most 4KTV's have apps that stream 4K content, so it isn't like we don't have any access to some sort of 4K stuff. Why would anyone pay that much for an upgrade basically, to a system we already have. That goes for PS4 Pro as well. Unless Scorpio comes out at a lower price than we are expecting and then causes the PS4 Pro to go lower, it seems completely stupid. Don't forget about Nintendo's new system. That's just my opinion.

@rabih55555: The GTX 1070 costs more than the entire PS4 Pro, and will probably cost about the same as the Scorpio, and it's just one component. So of course a device with GTX 1070 should be more powerful than the Scorpio. People keep comparing components and devices but forget to look at the prices....

@livedreamplay: Actually is sitting at $375 which is a little cheaper than the PS4Pro, and I think if you look hard enough you can get one for $325 - $350. Plus, if you have another GPU you can sell that and only spent about $200 on that one.

@VampireLord123: The cheapest one on both amazon and newegg is $375. Selling the old one doesn't really matter since you can do the same thing with the PS4-PS4Pro, you trade in your PS4 and just pay the difference. And let's not forget we are comparing a GPU to an entire device, think of the costs of all other components...

It don't matter if scorpio does become the most powerful console doest mean its gong to win the console war. Remember the ps2 it was weaker than the gamecube and the original xbox and it won the console war for that generation in the end it about the games and that's all i care about.

@Gabino7: Yeah PS2 was a beast at its time, but it didnt really have much of competition. Scoprpio has the potential to be the best console ever but it doesnt reall matter if sony has the biggest fan base outside the US. I just like the competition of these past 2 generations. Thats kept console gaming alive.

@Gabino7: Agree, people always go for games. Even now is a good example, the moment PS4 stopped releasing exclusives (only The Last Guardian for almost a year), Xbox started outselling them with Gears of War, Forza Horizon, Recore. If next year Sony starts spewing games like Horizon, Gran Turismo Sport, Days Gone, God of War, then obviously people will flock to PS4...
