New Xbox Scorpio Console Will Deliver "Really True 4K," Exec Says

Project Scorpio will have graphical fidelity on a level "never seen before" on console, Aaron Greenberg says.

Sony's PlayStation 4 Pro came out last week. Across the fence, Microsoft's Project Scorpio console is slated to arrive in holiday 2017. Now, Xbox executive Aaron Greenberg has discussed the upcoming Xbox console, saying it's capable of delivering "really true 4K."

"This will really bring the most powerful console you've ever seen," Greenberg said at this weekend's Xbox FanFest in Mexico City. "It will bring these really true 4K, really incredible visual games that we've never seen before on the console."

Now Playing: Project Scorpio Reactions at E3 2016

"People who have spent thousands of dollars on a high-end PC are getting that experience. How do we bring that to scale in a console in your living room? That's a big part of what Project Scorpio is about," he added.

Microsoft has said that all of its first-party games will run at a native 4K. "Any games we're making that we're launching in the Scorpio time frame, we're making sure they can natively render at 4K," Microsoft Studios GM Shannon Loftis said in September.

Microsoft announced Project Scorpio at E3 in June, but the company has not offered much in the way of specifics about the console since then. That may not change soon, as Greenberg said Microsoft is saving a good deal of significant reveals about Project Scorpio for 2017.

No Caption Provided

Earlier this month, Xbox engineering lead Mike Ybarra said Project Scorpio will "of course" support backwards compatibility for Xbox 360 games. The console also plays all Xbox One titles. According to Microsoft, there won't be any Project Scorpio-exclusive games--except for virtual reality titles.

Pricing for Project Scorpio has not been announced, but Microsoft has repeatedly referred to it as a "premium" device, so it likely won't be cheap.

Sony's PS4 Pro, which launched on November 10, sells for $400. Microsoft has said Project Scorpio is more powerful than Sony's console by a significant margin.

Well I already have a PS4, Mid range P.C. and 3DS, and still have a sweet place my WiiU use to be. So getting a Scorpio maybe my next hardware purchase if it's pushed forward, as I've contemplated getting a X1 a few times.

Depends really on pricing, and if "true 4K" is Scorpios only added feature, because Nintendo's Switch might be the better option for me. Seeing as I don't really care about 4K, let's hear about fluidity and optimized games.

Right now leaning more towards the Switch idea, but I'll wait and see how they turn out at e3 next year.

Better to have common sense, than being that guy who thought the PS4 Pro would run "Bloodborne at 60FPS".

@RSM-HQ: Can't wait to get the Switch. Nintendo should always have a place next to PC/PS/Xbox. The Switch doesn't care about all the 4Ks and 60fps, just bringing great games for an off-screen on-screen gaming option is epic by itself!

@RadioactiveMah: Agree; Nintendo is awesome!

But may as well note most WiiU and 3DS games are 60FPS, they just don't need to advertise it.

I'm fine with a solid 30FPS though most the time. "4K" and "60FPS" are just want whaws the outspoken crowd that want to justify picking a side in a pointless system-war_

@RSM-HQ: True, I wish people just appreciate how Nintendo games look great and perform beautifully smooth instead of hanging on resolutions and settings...I am not saying I don't care about those things, but within limit to actually stop thinking about it and appreciate a great game and great gameplay.

@RadioactiveMah: Lots of people like Nintendo games, you just won't find many on GS.

Don't let that discourage what you enjoy :)

Basically nobody cares because it isn't out for ages. Talking up something that far off is pointless.

Does comparing the scorpio to PC's worth a couple of thousand dollars not spell things out for people, or do they just think Microsoft have no interest in making money, that they are just going to give these systems away because they are nice guys, and feel they owe it to their fan base so much.

@sodapoppimpski: "Were" being the primary word, signifying past tense. the ps3 and 360 were great consoles at release, up there close to what PC could offer, and that use to be the case with every console release. Microsoft and Sony threw out outdated machines so they could make a quick buck. Years past and other consoles, they wouldn't have been seeing a return until well into half its life cycle, 4 or 5 years at least.

@UltimateBastard: Yeah this much was obvious a year ago. If it costs thousands for a gaming PC to do 4k/60 at max settings, how is a $400 box going to do it?

It likely won't be 60 fps. And the visual settings will have to be turned down a bit to get native 4K. It certainly won't look as good as a few thousand dollar PC.

Wow so every Xbox exclusive will run at native 4K. Gotta say that's pretty impressive.

@freeryu: Every Windows PC with more than 6 TFLOPs will perform at least the same as the Scorpio unless they botch the PC port.

I'm not saying someone's laptop can run Gears of War at 4k/60.

I purchase a PS4 Pro I'm impressed with the sharper Graphics I'm sure that patch the games n the system will get a patch later on. I can only imagine what the Scorpio is capable of doing. Navy game in 4k and I'm sure the frame rate is going to be more stable. You can play 360 games some of them n all your Xbox One games and All the games of scorpions are going to be definite 4K! I thinking maybe 500 to $600 is my price point.

My prediction that Microsoft exclusives will run in 4k and sports games BUT I believe that most 3rd party support games will not run in 4k because publishers and devs will whine that it is too time consuming to make games run 4k natively.

they are going to native 4k but at 30fps and i'm certain they are going to cut back on a few other settings: shadows, geometry, world detail etc etc

"Really true 4K" LOL! Native 4K is native 4K, ps4 pro can do it, it's just the developers choice. What fps with native 4K is the real question? They are really splitting hairs now, truth of the matter is that something like 0.01 % of humans can even actually see the difference between the checkerboard method and native 4K. Where 99.99 percent can see the immediate and amazing effect of HDR. I just want HDR at 60 fps with any form of 4K.

@ae6eu5: I can argue the same amount of people couldn't tell the difference between native 1080p and 900p upscaled yet it was claimed this whole generation it was a huge difference

@ae6eu5: No... it's very easy to see the difference between 4k and "almost 4k". Sony should have released a better Pro version of their console. If it was more impressive, I would have bought one myself.

Someone earlier made a good point: the number of devs capable of creating AAA games at 1080p has shrunk quite a bit from the last gen. How many will survive into the 4K era?

We need to rein things in a bit.

@Barighm: true but the jump from 480 to 720 or 1080 was a much harder then going to 4K. Most games on PC are already 4K porting that to console will be easy. Plus Xbox said 3rd party's can do whatever they want. The game doesn't have to be 4K, it can be 1080 with all the bells and whistles.
