Next GTA code-named Rush, set in LA?

Working off actor resumes, Superannuation spots casting calls for eclectic cast of characters on "interactive project" from Rockstar.

Source: The Twitter feed of expert Internet sleuth Superannuation.

What we heard: Up until recently, the Grand Theft Auto franchise was publisher Take-Two Interactive's main moneymaker. Since then, Take-Two has begun to expand its top-flight portfolio with the likes of Red Dead Redemption and BioShock 2. However, the franchise that continues to command the most attention remains GTA.

Nearly three years removed from the top-rated release of GTAIV, and it's possible that the first tidbits of GTAV info have been puzzled out by Superannuation. The posts began in late February, when the Internet sleuth discovered an actor's resume with a since-deleted reference to motion-capture work on Grand Theft Auto V. This motion-capture find, he said, led him to further investigation into motion-capture casting calls for Rockstar's go-to casting studio Telsey & Company.

GTA may be returning to Los Santos.
GTA may be returning to Los Santos.

"Among the projects listed in the casting call was an 'interactive project' called 'Rush,' which featured characters that fit with the few details I heard about GTA5; outlandish characters, weed, gangsters, & celebrities fit the profile for a contemporary LA-set GTA game," Superannuation tweeted.

The casting call in question, which commenced on December 6, sought actors to do motion capture and voice work for eight "additional principal characters" on the interactive project. The personalities have a decidedly Rockstar feel, with stock characters such as the "annoying, wise cracking, highly successful FBI agent" mixed with absurd personalities such as the "Welsh monk / cult leader / yoga teacher - 50, very lithe, very into exploring your personal tension through gripping massage."

Other characters referenced in the listing include a "weed evangelist"; a "swinger, mellow Californian divorcee" who is "ugly but comfortable with self"; and a "publicist for an actress known as America's newest sweetheart…who just so happens to love animals, orphans, drugs and sex."

Superannuation also secured a direct link between "Rush" and Rockstar Games, again courtesy of a self-promotional actor. On September 9, professional wrestler and aspiring actor Robert Esparza tweeted, "Got body scanned for my role in the video game 'Rush', coming out on Rockstar Games."

Should Rockstar choose to set GTAV on the West Coast, it wouldn't be a first for the franchise. The highly regarded GTA: San Andreas featured Los Angeles and San Francisco-inspired cities, complete with their surrounding boroughs. Of course, it wouldn't be the first time that Rockstar has returned to a locale, as GTAIV and GTAIII both took place on the mean streets of Liberty City, which bears more than a passing resemblance to New York.

The official word: Rockstar had not responded to a request for comment as of press time.

Bogus or Not Bogus?: A very tentative not bogus. What seems clear, at least, is that Rockstar is prepping some project under the name "Rush" and that the project will have an eclectic cast of characters that mesh with the GTA universe. Unfortunately, Take-Two has not even announced GTAV yet, so it may be some time before the industry gets an official look at the title.

While I don't mind the westcoast setting I was really hoping to see vice city in a contempory setting or even a trio of cities based on miami tampa and new orleans. If GTA were to see any new destinations I would love to see somewhere in texas or san diego combined with a little mexico.

I disagree with those who said that the game should be based in London or somewhere else. I think it should stick in the US. The series is suited to America. Los Angeles sounds like a good place for the next GTA!

Los Angeles seems a bit overused these days. Maybe London should do best since it would be cool to see. That or go back to basics with Vice City.

Was hoping for a all new locale for GTA V. However, I'm a big fan of Rockstars open-ended games so any news is good news. :)

LA will be awesome. London will be awesome-r. But nonetheless, I don't think I have a vote in what Rockstar does. I loved San Andreas, so I'm sure this will rock too! Let's just hope it isn't a 4-5 yrs development time. *cough*GT5*cough*FF13*cough*

@lilsukaass gamespot just gave it a 10 because it was GTA they always give big name games high scores even if they don't warrent it and anyone who's played GTAIV can attest to the fact that the game is no 10 maybe a 9 or an 8.75 but not a 10.

Rockstar are well known for keeping their projects well behind the curtains until very close to release. I think this will be no different.

Seriously.... wy can't GTA be in another Country? There is so much city out there that it would be fun to discover... Hong Kong, Tokyo, Paris, London, Tokyo, Sao Paulo, Syney, Moscow, Prague, Leningrad, Roma, Rio, Mexico, Montreal, Barcelona, Shangai, Bombay, .... dammit why always the same two ******* cities?????

Lame, looks like another rehash set in LA. I was hoping Rockstar would go somewhere different, like Europe (Italy or Paris for example offer a ton of storylines and possibilities), or Texas/the southwest (mexican drug cartels, biker gangs, prison gangs etc) or even post 1990 Russia would have been great. Sick of the Los Santos stuff. Even the characters seem familiar in this gossip. I'll still get it eventually, but i feel my hopes have been dashed a bit

Going back to San Andreas would be very nice but I really wanted Rockstar to return to the great 80's Vice City first, then go to San Andreas. I love the 80's Vice City feel so I hope this rumour is just a rumour.

I just want it to be as crazy as San Andreas or Chinatown Wars. GTA IV was realistic, but not as fun and its predecessors

Well I'm sure it will be huge and filled with a great cast of actors for the voices, but I'm still waiting for the next Max Payne. I read about it in a GAme Informer almost 8-9 months ago and it looked very impressive, so I'd love for Rockstar to ready Max Payne first, then give us another GTA. Then again they probably have different devs working on each, so hopefully we'll get both soon.

Would prefer Vice City myself.... expecially if they brought back Tommy Vercetti he was my favourite protaganist by far. I wouldnt be surprised if the Vercetti family had a few issues to deal with.

Sadly it doesn't sound like a San Andreas stories. 90's is so much more interesting a decade then the 2010's or whatever present day is called. They just need to cut out the BS and make a SA sequel already!

I would like to see a GTA where we play as a bent cop, would be interesting, like you have an opion to be a good cop, bad cop or somwhere in the middle. Think it would work will in a GTA game. And also, maybe its about time GTA was set in a city outside of the USA.

@chilly-chill I do believe that LA Noire will be good, but don't exactly expect for it to be better than Heavy Rain. As for this GTA Rush project or whatever. I would love to see a return to San Andreas, but I do feel branching off into others towns would be a nice addition to the series. I do feel a return to London would be fun, but could also accept a trip to Chicago for once.

@GTA LONDON GUYS Are you serious? GTA's settings all about the city lights and bustling streets. And for the people that are saying boo for making the setting L.A because of L.A Noir already need to realize that L.A Noir is not GTA or Red Dead. It'l be a lil more action packed version of Heavy Rain.
