NGP getting augmented reality games

GDC 2011: AR cards one of the new features revealed at Sony developer session; virtual treasure hunts, item exchanges, area recognition also planned; NGP not as powerful as PS3.

When Nintendo ships the 3DS on March 27, the portable will come with six augmented reality games. These titles will be based on a real-life card that is placed on a flat surface, which a player then centers the portable's outward-facing camera on. Once recognized, the AR card will initiate a game that will appear to be set in the real world, altering the surface and requiring the player to physically move the 3DS to center on targets or various other aspects of gameplay.

The NGP will be able to play augmented reality titles.
The NGP will be able to play augmented reality titles.

Now another handheld will also be bringing AR games to market. At a Game Developers Conference demonstration this week, Sony revealed that its Next Generation Portable will also have augmented reality functionality. During the demo, Sony Computer Entertainment director Tsutomu Horikawa used an old dinosaur demo from 1995 as an example.

The demo showed a Tyrannosaurus rex walking forward with cruder graphics from the era. Then, Horikawa pulled out an NGP demo unit and pointed its outward-facing camera toward a poster of a T. rex on the ground. He then panned up toward the ceiling of the room, and lo and behold, a 20-foot-tall T. rex was towering over the room--on the NGP, anyway.

AR Games weren't the only functionality revealed at the Sony session. The NGP will sport a feature called "Near," which will let players know where they went that day and find out which NGP games are popular in any given area. The 3G model of the NGP will achieve this via GPS, while the non-3G version will do so using Skyhook, a service that determines one's location via wireless hotspots.

The Near service will also allow for gaming possibilities similar to those used with the PSP GPS peripheral. People can engage in virtual treasure hunts at real-life locations and, once a treasure is found, exchange rare items wirelessly.

The majority of the Sony session, though, covered familiar ground. The power of the device's Arm9 CPU, with four 32-bit cores and advanced branch prediction, was touted, as was the processing brawn of its PowerVR SGX543MP4+ GPU. The CPU has four symmetrical cores, similar to console and PC architecture, allowing for the sharing of assets from PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 games.

The NGP uses programmable shaders much like the PS3 and has a lot of VRAM compared to the PSP. However, in terms of clock speeds, it won't be as powerful as the PS3, since if it were, "it would probably set fire to your pants," according to Sony platform research manager David Coombes.

Coombes said the NGP is a little bit bigger than the PSP and has four times the resolution of the previous portable's screen. He went over the features of the portable, including its dual thumbsticks, which he called "proper sticks," not PSP-like nubs. It's got a three-axis accelerometer and a three-axis gyroscope. The device also has touch screens on the back and front, both of which are multitouch and actually sense pressure as well.

The NGP also has two high-frame-rate cameras that will be able to detect human faces and have head tracking. The cameras will be capable of a passive camera mode that will let players take pictures of themselves that can be used as an avatar that will reflect damage. The NGP will also be capable of an active camera mode, which will be able to capture real-life textures for use in a game like the NGP version of Little Big Planet.

"However, in terms of clock speeds, it won't be as powerful as the PS3" Clock speed is irrelevant, as two CPUs can have the same processing power yet different clock speeds (but different architectures). A good architecture can execute more instructions per clock cycle, and thus clock speed comparison is only relevant between identical architectures. Thus, I don't see how this either confirms nor infirms that the NGP is less powerful than the PS3.

...yeah, NGP still doesn't have 3D games--OH BUT IT HAS "impose an image of whatever the camera took a snapshot of on whatever else the camera is seeing" aka augmented reality! And a touch screen, well now we're opening the BIG wallet.

It surprises me that anyone could say anything bad about either the 3DS or NGP, they're both incredible gaming devices. Remember the Gameboy? It had like 2 buttons and a thumb pad for controls, and everyone loved it. I make a little over minimum wage, sure I couldn't just buy both right away but it'd only take about a month of saving up for one and another month for the other. Btw 1 month in my time is like a week in teenager time.

The biggest reason I dropped my PSP, and PS3 was due to vary poor third party developer support, even the exclusives now are getting dropped by Sony like a bad habbit what with all the cuts at their Euro studios just announced, on top of that the PS3 seems to have hit a wall in Graphics (IE ethier high detail effects and low detail charicters, or high detail charicters and low detail effects) Just more proof that no matter how U develope on the PS3 developers will need to make cuts to get things to run on the platform, look at the Resistance 3 MP vid, while the game world, and chars look great the animations, and weapon effects look horribly low rez. The NGP is going to fail out right because Sony is launching too many new PS branded systems at once, theres the NGP, the NGP with 3G, the PS Tablet, the PS Phone.......... Talk about over expansion of the brand to the point where it's going to kill their rather small market share. How much U want to bet the NGP will indeed have AR games, but only Sony First party developers will make em? Just like all the other cool things on PS3, IE great looking exclusives crapy PS2 looking third party games......... Sony wont share anything with theird party developeres and instead shafts them so they always have the best stuff.

@xxxkinkykevxxx Loved your insight! If only Sony wasn't so narrow minded and allowed other card games to be used they could have made a killing! Magic, the VS system, and Yu-Gi-Oh! would have the gas on the fire for this peripheral.

@Shadowhunter0 Of course you wouldn't be disappointed, Sony just made the hardware. Even Microsoft got off their rears to help make the Halo series and a couple others. I have myriads of friends that have had PS systems over the years, and not one of them could name a game MADE by Sony. As for the Wii and it's games, what is the only difference between an M rated game and a T rated game? Did the Rating change from 'Mature' to 'More Awesome than a T because we said so'? Just because you added blood, gore, violence, nudity, and language doesn't make the game more enjoyable, it just plays at the idea that a "grown up's adventure" should have these things. Goldeneye for the N64 wasn't called a kid's game, and millions of guys our age played their copies till they fizzed out. But back to the original point, Wii and Nintendo is, was, and most likely will be for a very long time, at the forefront of gaming hardware. Do you know why? Because Sony and Microsoft are too chicken to take the risks. So have fun playing with your 'bandwagon' system. By the way, no one will ever think that R.E.4, No More Heroes (1 and 2), and Madworld are kid's games. . .

the NGP is gonna be called the Playstation Pleasure. It uses AR to make it look like there are naked women around you, and when you take your clothes of it looks like they are on you, riding it rough.

while i agree with most of these comments i have to disagree to, while motion control and augmented reality have been around for a long time no one is disagreeing their. I think the wii was the first one to fully utilize motion control into their system and use it for actual full length game play as a legitimate enhancement to the experience. I also do agree Sony has always played around with augmented reality a lot in the past and so have other company's to. what i think fan boys don't realize is that no one owns technology, and it's what you do with that tech that make any device forgettable or memorable, and @EKGProd i think Nintendo is very innovated as well as Sony . So i really don't care if any of you thumb me down for my opinion i have more self esteem then that. (i brace)

Hopefully they add a good amount of RAM, one of the PS3's flaws. They also should make it programmer friendly and easy to harness its capabilities, another one of the PS3's flaws. Power means nothing if you can't use it.

All i know is that sonys NGP looks more likely to have features which appeal to a gamer my age, so i will go with that instead of with the 3ds. its not a company favouritism. Oh and i really like the new features they have just announced. It sounds like an exciting piece of kit to play on.

Im amazed how can you look at a Move controller and not think Wii. First at GDC2010 a Sony representative announced the Move controllers primary game play button was made larger to make it easier to learn with a trigger button on the bottom for games that require more control. At GDC2007 Miyamoto said the same thing about the A and B button on the Wii-mote. Second at GDC2010 the same Sony representative said the light and camera were added for games that require more precise movement. At GDC2007 Miyamoto said the same thing about the Wii-mote pointer. Third at GDC2010 the same Sony representative said the navi controller was made for games that would require a thumbstick control. Again at GDC2007 Miyamoto said the same thing about the Nunchuk controller. Sony didnt Copy the Wii controllers just the parts Miyamoto mentioned in his 2007 speech at GDC that year. I have no doubt Sony is trying to make something similar the AR card game bundled with the 3DS.

nintendo was first in introducing more precise analog controls to home gaming consoles nuff said. yeah sony came along and added two/dual analogs thats cool. but nintendo has to be thanked for the advancement of the console controller.Super nes introduced the 6 button control scheme, thus allowing for more game-play/control options. which in turn allowed for the conversion of fighting games like Street Fighter and others to transition from the arcades to our living rooms.Nintendo 64's analog control allowed for a more fluid & precise control when moving objects or characters in a 3d environment. Im not taking anything away from Sony.Sony has been at the forefront for a very long time for their innovations in multimedia and entertainment technology. technically speaking Sony was one of the 1st to introduce portable entertainment to the masses via the Walkman (google it rookies).all im saying is give respect where respect is due.when it comes to the realm of electronic gaming, portable gaming, and home console gaming, Nintendo has been at the forefront as well for their innovations to the gaming industry.when Nintendo introduces something innovative everyone else seems to take it run with it and i guess expand upon it in their own way.and thats necessary for further advancement in any field of work, but you gotta recognize who the innovators and trend setters were/are. Nintendo is definitely amongst the top in their feild when it comes to innovation and trend setting.

@everyone who reply my comment, as far as i see, I NEVER seen sony try to copy anyTHING from Nintendo or the other companies ideas, it is just same thing when someone want to expanding their bussiness right? how about this oh yeah, sony release PS2 because they copy it from Gameboy advance, oh yeah and how about this, sony release PS3 beacause they copy it from NDS? why don't you tell me that sony steal Nintendo idea and than, nintendo sue to sony because sony try to copy GBA and NDS for makin PS2 AND PS3?. Why don't you tell me that nintendo try making a HOME CONSOLE TOO (WII) by copy PS2, adding DVD rom to wii and TADAA!! and at last NIntendo make wii by copying PS2 (the only different thing between ps2 and wii, that WII have a motion controller and a hardisk that they copy the ideas from MS xbox) does it really matter? i don't even care that Nintendo make A HOME CONSOLE too.. i even didn't care whatever sony, MS, and nintendo try to steal ideas between another. Oh yeah, I have to remember YOUR COMMENT about Sony and copying nintendo. IF soon, nintendo and MS will develop xbox 720 and wii 2, by enchance the spec of their console to even more robust than PS3(HAHA, it is lie if SONY, MS, and Nintendo will not make a new robust console right?), yeah, i like to see you silent by NOT comment nintendo and MS for stealing Sony idea or i even more like to see that you comment ms and nintendo for stealing the idea of "enchance console" from sony. I will always... ALWAYS remember you for ETERNITY

"I don't see anyone whining about Nintendo using dual analog sticks for the Wii Classic controller which Sony was the first to do" Maybe, but if you're going on a timeline you should have mentioned the GC controller before the Wii's classic. And of course the Move is not a copy of the Wiimote. That would mean that Sony was full of crap years ago when they said motion controls and casual gaming weren't....... oops, that did happen. Look, in this industry, a lot of ideas are reused. Sony just has a habit of talking crap about someones else implementation of something 6 months before they announce it themselves. That's why people are crying that Sony is stealing ideas. That, and the fact that they've tried before, but someone finally read the contract.

@ soulreaper-4 I never called you a fanboy. The top half of my comment was aimed at the generic Ninty fanboys on this site that always accuse Sony of copying when Nintendo isn't 100% original themselves. So what if Sony stole rumble? I don't see anyone whining about Nintendo using dual analog sticks for the Wii Classic controller which Sony was the first to do. That's like saying Nintendo copied PS2 for using DVDs as a storage median for Wii titles. The augmented reality games are the same thing. For Eye of Judgement you buy a deck of cards and use the PSEye to do battle with them. Invizimals comes with a PSP camera that allows you to scan objects to catch monsters. In Eyepet you can draw things that the pet will then draw and make them come to life. All three of those were done before Iwata unveiled the 3DS at E3 but OH NOES, Sony is back at blatantly ripping-off Nintendo because a GameSpot editor with spare time to waste twisted some info to start another pointless flamewar. Again, PS Move is NOT a copy of the Wiimote. Dr. Richard Marks demonstrated a prototype of the Move YEARS before any of Nintendo's fanboys even knew about the Revoution/Wii.

@ burgeg First of all,all fanboys do indeed suck. No need to say something dumb like,"NGP/3DS will DIIIIIIIIEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!" Followed by all kinds of emoticons, when it simply isn't true, they will both definitely be huge successes in different demographics, and especially when neither is out yet. Also I meant usually. I have to get up at 4 to go to work at 5,so I don't have much time to read through the comments,(nor much desire with all the flaming!) so I didn't realize the abnormal amount of N fanboys. This article produced quite a turnout. There normally aren't so many. As to this whole "copying" thing,it's most likely just coincidence that they came up with the same idea in the same timeframe.Sony did once copy Nintendo at the last minute with the last minute addition of motion in the PS3 DualShock controller, but this seems more like coincidence. Other companies frequently take inspiration from Nintendo's ideas, and that's fine, because N doesn't own the industry, and this produces better products. Nintendo is borrowing from others with the improved online functions, because the other guys proved the popularity of online gaming. The point is ideas are shareable.(Unless trademarked of course.)

@ CorruptGamerGX The augmented reality games are not the same kind and technology of the Eye of Judgment, Eyetoy. I'm not a fanboy, if you want you can take a look at my profile, blog and gamelist. I play every kind of game from PS3 to Wii and all but Sony always copy Nintendo in some way. Same with the rumble in controllers, the analog sticks, the Wii Remote.

Think you find the Sony have been toying with motion controller free games since the PS2 using only the EyeToy, a pencil and a ball stuck on the end, way before MS came up with the Kinetic. << LINK REMOVED >>

Blah, blah, blah Nintendo innovates Sony imitates We've heard it a million times Nintendo fanboys. Instead of quickly raising the copy flag, why don't you realise GameSpot goofed up in the article. @soulreaper-4 You should be ashamed of yourself for not doing any simple research. As others have pointed out Eyepet, Eye of Judgment and Invizimals all came out before 3DS was even annonced. PS Move is also NOT a copy of the Wiimote but instead the SUB-CONTROLLER is of the nunchuck.

@10679 Sony walkman was original was it not? People give sony to hard a time imo, they didnt invent but are definitly leading the charge with 3D tv and gaming, and such, and innovation is cool but once again companies need to copy others to keep market going. Sure MS started xbox live and online gaming, but ps3 now has twice as many members on their online network, its not necessarily about innovation, just make sure when you innovate you do it right.

I remember when NGP fans would diss augmented reality on the 3DS. I remember when PS3 fans would make fun of the Wii Controller and its motion sensing. I remember when PSP fans would diss touch screens on the DS. I remember when PSP fans would say UMD's are better than DS cartridges. I remember lots of sh** that you guys forget but hey, you all will keep hating on every unique feature Nintendo's got until Sony's got all the same features.

Touch pad on the back is so dumb. Really really dumb. Maybe they should just remove the touch pads entirely and sell the system for $200. The perfect portable without the nonsense. AR isn't fun, but Nintendo can make it work. Sony, stick to what you're good at; hardcore gaming.

Wow Sony should be ashamed of themself . They are almost always copying Nintendo one way or another, If they want to copy they should add something different with new features not the same as others.

@lizzie1238 - And you cant deny all companies do the same. Including Nintendo. They copied dual analog from Sony. Sega Game Gear had a backlight before any Nintendo handheld. They weren't the first to have online functionality in a console. In fact they were a whole generation late. PSP had downloadable games long before Nintendo implemented it in DSi. The list goes on and on. All companies do it. They copy and improve. It isn't a bad thing. It's not just that people are screaming copy. It's that they're using it as a negative against Sony and only Sony. Nintendo does the same and everyone knows it.

Nice feature, I guess. Still would like to learn the price tag and more game confirmations.

If Sony is so much better why do tehy keep copying nintendo's 3DS? I mean, I lvoe the powerful screen, but seriously? You don't need to copy them to compete.

This is awesome (Day 1 purchase for me.), but I have to wonder how much this is going to cost. Adding lots of technology is a double edged sword: It makes the piece of technology much better, but the price goes up as well... Also, does anybody know if they have indicated how long the battery life on this is going to be? If they have, please tell me.
