NGP getting augmented reality games

GDC 2011: AR cards one of the new features revealed at Sony developer session; virtual treasure hunts, item exchanges, area recognition also planned; NGP not as powerful as PS3.

When Nintendo ships the 3DS on March 27, the portable will come with six augmented reality games. These titles will be based on a real-life card that is placed on a flat surface, which a player then centers the portable's outward-facing camera on. Once recognized, the AR card will initiate a game that will appear to be set in the real world, altering the surface and requiring the player to physically move the 3DS to center on targets or various other aspects of gameplay.

The NGP will be able to play augmented reality titles.
The NGP will be able to play augmented reality titles.

Now another handheld will also be bringing AR games to market. At a Game Developers Conference demonstration this week, Sony revealed that its Next Generation Portable will also have augmented reality functionality. During the demo, Sony Computer Entertainment director Tsutomu Horikawa used an old dinosaur demo from 1995 as an example.

The demo showed a Tyrannosaurus rex walking forward with cruder graphics from the era. Then, Horikawa pulled out an NGP demo unit and pointed its outward-facing camera toward a poster of a T. rex on the ground. He then panned up toward the ceiling of the room, and lo and behold, a 20-foot-tall T. rex was towering over the room--on the NGP, anyway.

AR Games weren't the only functionality revealed at the Sony session. The NGP will sport a feature called "Near," which will let players know where they went that day and find out which NGP games are popular in any given area. The 3G model of the NGP will achieve this via GPS, while the non-3G version will do so using Skyhook, a service that determines one's location via wireless hotspots.

The Near service will also allow for gaming possibilities similar to those used with the PSP GPS peripheral. People can engage in virtual treasure hunts at real-life locations and, once a treasure is found, exchange rare items wirelessly.

The majority of the Sony session, though, covered familiar ground. The power of the device's Arm9 CPU, with four 32-bit cores and advanced branch prediction, was touted, as was the processing brawn of its PowerVR SGX543MP4+ GPU. The CPU has four symmetrical cores, similar to console and PC architecture, allowing for the sharing of assets from PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 games.

The NGP uses programmable shaders much like the PS3 and has a lot of VRAM compared to the PSP. However, in terms of clock speeds, it won't be as powerful as the PS3, since if it were, "it would probably set fire to your pants," according to Sony platform research manager David Coombes.

Coombes said the NGP is a little bit bigger than the PSP and has four times the resolution of the previous portable's screen. He went over the features of the portable, including its dual thumbsticks, which he called "proper sticks," not PSP-like nubs. It's got a three-axis accelerometer and a three-axis gyroscope. The device also has touch screens on the back and front, both of which are multitouch and actually sense pressure as well.

The NGP also has two high-frame-rate cameras that will be able to detect human faces and have head tracking. The cameras will be capable of a passive camera mode that will let players take pictures of themselves that can be used as an avatar that will reflect damage. The NGP will also be capable of an active camera mode, which will be able to capture real-life textures for use in a game like the NGP version of Little Big Planet.

HonorOfGod@ "btw do your homework next time jr." FAIL AGAIN JR! you said: "Nintendo and Microsoft will never use the Blu Ray because Sony owns" WRONG!!! Sony owns part of it! Blu-ray Disc was developed by the Blu-ray Disc Association, a group representing makers of consumer electronics, computer hardware, and motion pictures! @mrhagane.(PT 2) As for Blu-Ray. Do you know Sony is the biggest movie studio owner? They own just about every movie studio. Only a handfull are owned by others. That is why Blu-Ray won. Put a Blu-Ray drive in the PS3 and make your studios put stuff out on Blu.. See what I'm getting at? I can back all this up. One more thing.. Xbox 1 was in the works long before PS2 and almost 2 years before the PS2 came out MS talked about putting DVD drives in it... I have a PC mag with Bill talking about MS's going into gaming. You are the fanboy..

@mrhagane. (PT. 1)You are wrong about Sony being the first CD ROM system. It was a system by NEC.. The Sgea had the sega CD. The sega CD could have ran on it's own but they thought it would be better for them just to make people buy one for the other. Also PC was the first for 3D gaming, the SNES could run 3d as well. Sega's 32 bit was the frist anything to have 8 CPUs. Much more powerful than PS1. Even before Sega CD and others, arcade systems used CD tech. Xbox and Sony both got the idea of "ANALOG STICK" from N64. Also the Dreamcast was the first that let people play online. Xbox 1 was the first to use a hard drive and sony came out with an add. xbox 1 was the first to some out with high speed lan for online play. Every system maker will take other ideas and build on it. Just like the Move is a copy off of wii. Also Sony copyed off of xbox with online play. As for " ZERO CREATIVITY" Sony has showed not to have much. Every thing came from Big N. Well not every thing but 99% of it has. Did you know that NES was the first to have wireless pad?

@mrhagane FYI I don't even have an Xbox.. I never stated to being a FanBoy thats what you get for being ignorant. Nintendo and Microsoft will never use the Blu Ray because Sony owns it and yes I give them props for coming up with at least that BUT! the demand for cd's is dying and Digital media is taking over with things like Steam and even the ability to download full games on Live ext. its ..useless now. As for who is more creative MS or SONY.. well.. lets take the Move and Kinect for example.. the Kinect was made with a hole new way and concept of playing games in a new way for home consoles as you can see no controller is needed. Now look at the MOVE.. IT LOOKS LIKE A WII MOTE!!!! acts like a wii mote.. monkey see monkey do! (sony the copy monkey). What would Sony be withought Nintendo ..Nothing!

@yearof3000 the first model of Ps1 has no analog sticks. Sony wants the money MS is making from Live Gold and they should have started right from the start as they are now pounding there heads because they could never get that money now do to the fact that they will lose so many people.. but they do try with Plus.

@yearof3000 well, the original PS that came in 1994 had a controller very similar to the 1990's snes. the 1996's n64 came out with a analog stick, about a year later 1997 sony introduced the PS dualshock. to me both of this sony controllers are improved versions of what nintendo had already made. by the way, the force feedback was also included on the n64 before the dualshock release. so yeah, I guess we can say sony likes to one up other companies, but such is life. that doesn't mean I won't play my ps1,2,3 and psp1.

@HonorOfGod: zero creativity my @ss! Your opinion are nothing than revealing yourself as a xbox fanboy. Sony the FIRST one who release first console with CD ROM! Until the era of 3D graphic game (PS2), Microsoft SUDDENLY came with xbox, zero creativity? look again which the one copying first, ps2 came with DVDROM at March 4, 2000 and so xbox also came with DVDROM, and also an ANALOG STICK at November 20, 2001. November 11, 2006, The PS3 was also the FIRST Blu-ray 2.0-compliant Blu-ray player on the market and also the first console that can use wi fi. Even PS3 the first console that can use 3D LCD. Sony officially announced the PS3 CECH-2000 slimmer model on August 18, 2009 at the Sony Gamescom press conference. Ads later surfaced on June 13, 2010 showing a SLIMMER Xbox 360 design, which was expected to include a 250 GB hard drive and integrated Wi-Fi functionality. Did you see the equation between sony and microsoft? This is a prove that sony have no ZERO CREATIVITY, and it is really clear that Xbox which one is the copycat of ps3. Such many creation as Blueray, wi fi, slimmer console, 3D LCD, high spec portable gaming (NGP) came from Sony. Tell me which one is more creative, SONY or Microsoft? And tell me which one mimics more, what a fanboy l0ser... grow up KID! (i'm not a xbox hater but i'm a xbox fanboy hater)

wow...i see lots of sony haters here...I love how they ignore the fact that sony has had AR for awhile now...eye of judgement, eye pet, which I'm sure were announced long before 3DS was conceived. On another note...2 analog sticks could mean a cod handheld which might push alot of units...

HonorOfGod@ I first off how did Sony copy the Analog stick?! They're using the same controller style back then with PS1!!! The "PS Plus" and "LIVE" are two different things! LIVE however you paid one big package with Online gaming, nexflix (extra payment), and etc.. But with PS Plus you don't have to pay extra serves (discounts, early demos, betas, etc...it's optional to pay for it! And playing online is Free, unlike being force to pay for online on everything you don't used! To make it short Sony doesn't copy everything! Samething goes for MS they copy too, the only company who have creativity is Nintendo not MS or Sony!!!

@squidracerX I never stated that Nintendo invented this lol. All I am saying is that Sony copys Nintendo at what they do all the time. Analog stick, Motion, portable gaming, ext. the list goes on and on and they also copy Microsoft now with things like the home button on the remote, PSN Plus like Live Gold, ext. Sony has zero creativity and is nothing but a scavenger.

@HonorOfGod - are you saying Sony copied Nintendo with the augmented reality stuff? Ummmm "eye of judgment" came with the PS3 eye camera and was a card based game that did this years ago, and magazines and such have used web cameras to do this for a long time. Nintendo did not invent this by a long shot. @rustymenon - do your research and yes Sony had basically the same motion sensing tech planed out that they have now way back on the first Eyetoy. Just google it. The inventor of the Eyetoy is a really smart guy that saw potential in this years ago, the only reason Sony did not pick up on it was that the Eyetoy sold poorly and they did not think there was a market for it. I am sure Sony is kicking themselves now, but i really doubt Sony would have been able to push it as well as Nintendo anyway. but yeah I am sick of this argument, Sony showed prototypes YEARS before Wii was out. Its fact. And yeah you can go back and say Nintendo had powerglove, I hear that back a lot, but this is only about Sony, this motion wand is not new for them, not saying Nintendo didn;t have a huge impact on them bringing it to market; Nintendo's success opened their eyes for sure.

@shadowhunter0 First off, let me ask you one thing. If Sony was working on Motion Gaming earlier than Nintendo, come it took them 5 more years than Nintendo? Wait, since it is equal to MotionPlus, then 1 year. Let me tell you, they just waited for the the PS3 to rise to the peak of its power, looked at motion gaming's response, and then quickly released Move before Kinect to get a nice clean profit and throw the Wii out of the race.

@shadowhunter0 Anybody with a brain could use correct grammar, they are called commas and periods. Maybe your text-addled brain has forgotten that these symbols create pauses in a sentence. . . As for the 'Fanboy' comment: Yes, and proud of it. But I have one question: If Sony is so far ahead of Nintendo in all these areas you stated, then why is it that Nintendo usually releases truly new hardware/software way before your beloved company jumps on the bandwagon. I will admit that Sony is a great company, so don't get the idea that I'm too overly biased. But Nintendo is a specialty company, they have been at this for 25+ years. Most of that time they have been seen as the underdog and have used that to their advantage. . .

I love how Nintendo is treated today. They do things that aren't remotely new, groundbreaking, or unique yet get credit for all three. Not only is AR old and has already been done by Sony it is obvious that NGP AND 3DS both decided to put this in on their own. Sony and Nintendo have been working on these things for years. People complaining about copying got old a long time ago. Not to mention there is nothing wrong with adopting someone elses good idea. Technology is built on that principle. If you were never allowed to take someone elses good idea and but it into your own device the market would stagnate and die. Nintendo wasn't the first to do just about anything, neither is Sony. They have been the first to do certain things right however. Stop being ignorant. If people didn't take good ideas to use for their own products no current console would exist. NGP has its market 3DS has its market. Stop acting like only one device can/should exist.

@Distinctive_Fin is is very obvious that you are a Nintendo fanboy by the way every with a brain knows that Sony has been working on motion controls way before Nintendo also the move is much better than the I have use both and the move is way more precise even against the wii plus thing also move has true 1:1 and there are games with the move that the wii can never do

Is it just me, or did all the old Sega fanboys move to Sony when the Dreamcast died? Now they think that Sony can do no wrong. First the compromised a more intuitive gameplay style for something easy, Upped graphics, then when they get motion gaming (three or four years too late) they bow to Sony's wisdom. Now that Nintendo is coming out with a more intuitive system (again), we have more simple minded people bashing the 3DS because it does something first or something their little NGP can't. I chose Nintendo because I want the best, first. Not the almost as good, second. Have fun trying to look awesome with a system that has a lot of old tech (and very little new) stuck in it. Time to either shut it or embrace the future. . .

central you couldnt be any more wrong , lol nintendo innovated during the n64 era --- first ever 64 bit console , first ever console with 4 controller ports out of the box and brought fpses such as goldeneye to their popularity , nintendo has did the handheld industry wonders and will continue that ,see the first week sales of 3ds- before you talk trash , , and wii was the first true motion based console that actually took off, and ds was not the first dual screen the game and watch was which was also by nintendo =so whos pwned now , and ds is the fist ever touch screen gaming oriented device that actually plays good games
