Nintendo announces DSi

Third iteration of DS console to be released in Japan on November 1; features bigger screen, SD memory slot, two cameras.

The DSi with new features highlighted.

In another one of those "worst-kept secret" moments, Nintendo has today confirmed the rumours that it would be updating its DS handheld hardware for the second time. Announced in Japan this morning, the Nintendo DSi will boast a slimmer body, bigger screens, two cameras, and new image and music players. It will also lose the Game Boy Advance cart slot, replacing it with an SD memory slot for storing music, images, and downloadable content.

The chassis of the new console measures in at 2.6mm less than the DS Lite--making it 12 percent thinner than its forbear. In turn, the screens have become larger at 3.25 inches, 17 percent bigger than the original 3-inch LCDs. As for the new additions to the console, Nintendo has packed a 3-megapixel camera on the exterior of the case, with another lower-resolution camera on the interior hinge. The cameras integrate with new multimedia features for the DS, with images and music stored to SD card via the new slot, and software on the console to play multimedia content. A new Internet browser will also be installed on the machine, allowing people to browse the Web and the DSi Shop to download games and applications to SD cards.

The DSi will launch in Japan on November 1 for ¥18,900 ($179, £101). International releases will follow in 2009, but Nintendo Europe would not confirm rumours that the console would launch next spring in the rest of the world.

I'm not sure how the DSi will do. Removing the GBA slot (Which Guitar Hero: On Tour needs) is a dumb move. However, if the pledged downloadable content includes the DSi's answer to the Virtual Console, I may actually go for one. I only ask that Nintendo would not rely solely on the past, making the DSi seem more like an expensive emulator than a full fledged gaming system.

I'd just buy an old GBA. I'm sure you could find one for under $20.

Wow once again so much negative criticism for an amazing Nintendo announcement, what a surprise... But really, the DSi is gunna be huge for Nintendo and I'm definitely getting one. Might keep my DS Lite tho so I can play all my GBA games, but I would imagine that some of the new DSware downloads will be old GBA and GB games (Metroid 2 pleeeease!). If you're mad at Nintendo for revamping the DS, then don't buy this model. Apparently you won't need this new DS to play new games, so stay with your old one and be happy. They do this with cameras and phones all the time, nothing new. And yes, probably in 2 years we'll see the actual DS sequel, but this is a great bridge for Nintendo till then. I just don't understand being angry because Nintendo is putting out another improved model of the best selling handheld in the world. The PSP in starting to encroach upon the DS in sales in Japan, so this is an obvious answer to keep the Nintendo DS relevant.

I agree. This looks like a really cool new installment for the DS but I like my GBA games and want to continue playing them...

Damn, I was thinking this was really cool, till I wentn to re-read and saw it was losing the GBA card slot. Now, all I buy when it comes to portable games nowadays are DS games. But still, I've got a ton of GBA games, and I don't see myself giving that up. Nintendo's got to learn to stop taking functionality out of their revamps. Add all you want, but don't give up features. On that note, I wonder what Activision thinks of this? Doesn't the guitar add-on use the GBA slot?

Well it's an improvement but still no where near as good as the PSP when it comes to graphics and features.

I'm not too impressed with it- I might get it, but I dunno. I don't need or want anything it's offering. I'll keep my DS lite though, I really regret letting my mom chuck my GBC.

The biggest problem is that the DS/DSLite's volume levels are atrocious, even with headphones on. I'll laugh if the newer DS has the same problem. I bought an Original DS and 1 Game on launch day, and have only bought 3 other games for it since then.

Looks really cool and a bigger screen is awesome, but no GBA slot? I'm still playing old GBA games on my DS when there's nothing else to play. It would be weird carrying around two different DS's around so I'll pass on this. But if you don't own a DS and never cared about GBA games, I don't see how this deal could get any sweeter.

Lose the DSi, keep the DS Lite. Why mess with something when it's perfectly fine? The GBA slot should remain intact, and if they really want to make an improvement then they should add even a second or third DS game slot, so you can store a couple of games in the system, ready to play at any time.

this is great because the ds game supply was running out and now game designers are going to use the camera function and maybe we'll have some games where we can put our own sd card music as a soundtrack

It may not have a GBA slot, but I think that the SD slot will help to get emulators in it, or something similar. Whatever it is, they should make a new console already =/

No gba slot? From what i've seen this is not a big deal to you guys. Think about what a gba slot is to the system and for nintendo itself. That is huge for me and personally i think giving that up for a camera and an sd slot is just dumb. I think Nintendo it just trying to "keep up" with new products. This is lame...

I'm a PSP owner and supporter, and I don't own a DS, nor to I ever plan to, but damn. The PSP-3000 just got downright thrashed. This looks pretty damn cool. Only thing here the PSP doesn't have is the camera, which is exactly what I want, but still, it's a huge upgrade for such a non-multimedia system.

Heh. My younger sister has a pink DS Lite since Christmas of '06. She and myself would rather check out the latest games for the DS instead.

First the new GBA micro loses it's ability to play GBC games. Now the new DSi gets rid of the GBA slot. Uh, no thanks Nintendo. If I want a picture-taking, music-playing, web-browsing, application-dowloading multimiedia device I might as well get an iPhone. $30 more gets me the ability to call people.

The improvements aren't much. The size isn't that much different and the functions are things you can get elsewhere. It's like the PSP 3000. It doesn't have things that would make me want it.

Couldn't someone just download there GBA games via ROMs and put them onto the SD card and boot them off of that? I mean is still legal as long as you own the original game most you would nee to do is a small hack.
