During Wednesday's Nintendo Direct, the corporation announced that the New Nintendo 3DS XL will launch in the United States in February, but not the smaller version that's already available in Japan and Australia and is coming to Europe. Now, Nintendo has explained why the more compact system isn't going to be released stateside.

"Different territories make their own business decisions regarding individual products and timing," Nintendo of America said in a statement sent to Polygon.

"We think New Nintendo 3DS XL makes the most sense for our market. Nintendo makes different systems at different price points for a whole range of consumers, and New Nintendo 3DS XL simply expands those choices even further."

Nintendo of America will release the New Nintendo 3DS XL in the US starting February 13 for $200. "New red" and "New black" colors will be available, while shoppers can also buy special-edition bundles for The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask 3D and Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate.

Though the standard-sized New Nintendo 3DS won't be available in the US next month, Nintendo of America did not rule out a release for the system later on. Pressed for details regarding the future availability of the smaller model, the company said it had "nothing to announce at this time."

In Japan at least, the New Nintendo 3DS XL has proven more popular than the smaller version, according to a report from Famitsu, which says the XL model outsold the standard version 3:1 at launch.

For lots more on the New Nintendo 3DS XL and the standard-sized model, check out the video above, in which GameSpot editor Dan Hindes speaks with Nintendo about the two units.

I kind of understand, but I really want the smaller one. All because of the faceplates and colored buttons. Also I think a better name could have been the super 3ds, of all the names they just slapped a "new" in front of the title. c'mon Nintendo, lets have some effort.

I made the upgrade from the original 3ds to the new one, and it was the best decision I ever made. I actually play it a lot more now, screen size is perfect, it's ergonomically better for a tall guy like myself w/big hands, and I can actually enjoy the 3d now. I enjoy the games a lot more, and I'm not squinting at a tiny screen anymore. I'm 27 and it just feels like a Nintendo handheld for adults. Good money spent and the discount era muy nice. Great job Nintendo. I didn't really mind not having the option to pick between the two new versions, but I wish the new xl had exchangeable face plates

The new system just isn't worth it to me. I really don't see much of a difference. They want to sit here and slowly start churning out exclusives, while giving us no incentive to buy. They basically tell us we're too stupid, and that it would cause confusion. If anyone was confused it'd be THEIR fault! The Japanese versions of all 3 systems are highly distinguishable, and then when they bring them over here they solve the problem by making them more boring for us? They don't offer us anything, from colors to face plates, and they expect us to buy? They have no idea what they're doing and in the end we have to suffer for it?

I'll be sticking to my regular XL, and if new exclusives come out, I guess I just won't buy them! I'm sure others feel the same way. (Give me an all-white version just like theirs, with face plates and everything, and you could have all my money! But no! C'mon, it's just a color, man!)

<< LINK REMOVED >> Not sure why everyone's up in arms about making the switch to the New 3DS. You can sell your current XL for more than half of the cost needed to purchase the new one, and it's more than worth it. The New XL blows away the other models; I couldn't imagine going back to them.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Ah, I see where you're coming from, but selling is a hassle in itself for many. Being forced to switch is a hassle, everybody's situation is different! Personally, I went through the trouble of getting the Pikachu version so.... I can't just give mine up like that! Lol. :'(

I hope they release the smaller New Nintendo 3ds in the US. I have really small hands, so I'm not going to buy an XL system that any company releases. I purchased a 2ds because of the size and comfort. Without getting the new future New 3ds XL games. The game boy sp is even more comfortable than the 3ds xl. The Xbox One even has a huge controller compared to the Xbox 360. I feel so tiny over here with all of these XLs surrounding me! *sobs*

<< LINK REMOVED >> Is the Xbox One controller really bigger than the 360 one? I never noticed that. Are you perhaps referring to the original Xbox controller or the S model?

Okay, I gotta ask: Who is that in your avatar? I see that avatar everywhere but not with an explanation.

Is it called Adventure Dude? I don't see that game listed anywhere!

As an adult I have the original 3DS (Which is smaller) and it sucks. It hurts my hands when I play it. So I'd get the XL if I didn't already have the original... :P

My daughter only has the use of one hand, and she's been playing since the original DS days. She plays stretching her right hand across the screen, and the small DS is the ONLY system she can use, her hand isn't big enough for the XL, or even the PSP or Vita. Now, she's just out of luck when her 3DS dies, and more games require the New model.

The only way Nintendo is gonna force me to buy a giant new 3DS, is if they release 7th gen Pokémon ONLY on new 3DS.

Waiting for smaller version~*

Well, could they at least make custom face plates for the larger ones then? Not that it matters much; I have no definite plans to get one. I think I'll wait a little while longer in case Nintendo decides to release a New 3DS with more comfortable right stick. Actually, I'm hoping there will be a New 3DS that's designed like a 2DS but with all the functions of a New 3DS. I'm not crazy about breakable hinges.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> Dont get a the XL 3ds. 3d is a gimmick. you will turn it off in a week or less. Get the 2ds if you want but i have to agree with Chaoticgodz...its not worth it, maybe i was spoiled by all the games from my cellphone that i find every title lacking and with outdated graphics. Even the Xperia play (2011) have better looking games...and it was a flop.

Having owned an original 3DS and now a new 3DS XL, the XL is the way to go. The extra screen realestate makes for a better experience and the system is still reasonably sized. Unless you want to put it in your pocket (but who does that anyways).

Let's learn from the mistakes of Microsoft's gigantic Xbox controller here! Bigger is not always better, especially in the hands. There are gamers out there with smaller hands that will appreciate the split second differences a few mm can make. I can understand having MORE XLs at launch since it seems to be preferred but having 0 standard ones feels like a mistake!

It's a weird trend that's going on with the screen sizes of portable devices getting bigger & bigger, and it started with smartphones.

Samsung started it with their Galaxy Note phones, having an oversized screen on a portable device. No one in the phone community thought it would take off because, at the time, portables kept getting smaller & smaller. But it got more and more popular and now even Apple released a big phone, the iPhone 6 Plus.

I even rock a phone with a 5.5" screen, the OnePlus One (you probably never heard of it). And I immediately got used to the size and anything smaller feels less useful now.

So being Nintendo idolizes Apple so much, that if Apple is doing it then it must be the right thing to do, that the market likes over-sized screens on their portable devices.

This is just my opinion, being both a tech and games enthusiast, but I bet it's not too far off from the thinking behind this decision.

<< LINK REMOVED >> BUt it sucks in the case of the 3ds XL because the graphics still look pretty bad. Why havent they upgraded the graphic engine? it looks bad and worst in a bigger screen. Even the xperia play from 2011 have a better screen.

wow most of the old ds were all pretty ugly and didn't get as many color options as japan and they wonder why it was selling so bad. now they have customizable shells for the new ds and wont capitalize on it but instead release the new xl, also with shit color options. i guess they just think americans have shit aesthetic taste at this point.
