During Wednesday's Nintendo Direct, the corporation announced that the New Nintendo 3DS XL will launch in the United States in February, but not the smaller version that's already available in Japan and Australia and is coming to Europe. Now, Nintendo has explained why the more compact system isn't going to be released stateside.

No Caption Provided

"Different territories make their own business decisions regarding individual products and timing," Nintendo of America said in a statement sent to Polygon.

"We think New Nintendo 3DS XL makes the most sense for our market. Nintendo makes different systems at different price points for a whole range of consumers, and New Nintendo 3DS XL simply expands those choices even further."

Nintendo of America will release the New Nintendo 3DS XL in the US starting February 13 for $200. "New red" and "New black" colors will be available, while shoppers can also buy special-edition bundles for The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask 3D and Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate.

Though the standard-sized New Nintendo 3DS won't be available in the US next month, Nintendo of America did not rule out a release for the system later on. Pressed for details regarding the future availability of the smaller model, the company said it had "nothing to announce at this time."

In Japan at least, the New Nintendo 3DS XL has proven more popular than the smaller version, according to a report from Famitsu, which says the XL model outsold the standard version 3:1 at launch.

For lots more on the New Nintendo 3DS XL and the standard-sized model, check out the video above, in which GameSpot editor Dan Hindes speaks with Nintendo about the two units.

I'm guessing they are not prepared to stock it. It will probably come eventually. May be too late but eh. They should release limited amounts at a time. Create demand and they get guaranteed sales. People get what they want eventually then.

I'm still hoping that they look into making a New 2DS, as i feel that the ZL/ZR buttons along with the C stick and faster CPU would be a welcome addition to the 2DS family.

Nintendo I love you...

But what the f***?! Such a horrendous idea. Why deprive your customers of choice? I really dislike the XL models as their games are noticeably worse looking due to the lack of resolution scaling. Also, what's the deal with not bundling NECESSARY ITEMS such as the charger?! Are you angry at us? Why are you making such stupid decisions?

What's even more frustrating is that even though I live in the UK, I'm still boned by this restriction as I have an American 3DS (with a whole library of American games) and Nintendo are being so stubborn with the backward ass practice of region locking!

<< LINK REMOVED >> Buy a New 3DS and hope the Firmware is old so you can region spoof it. Of course you are left with the choice of region free, install games to the home menu (legal in Canada at least, as long as you own the cart) and be able to use save data transfer via firmware version spooifing, have custom themes, and still use the eShop, OR, play Xenoblade Chronicles 3D and the other new titles that need a higher FW version.

Let the consumers decide which is best for themselves. It's alright to act upon sales number of 3DS vs. 3DS XL and the numbers in Japan, but in this case, at least just release a lesser amount of the smaller models.

It really peeves me because I've held the 3DS XL and, although the bigger screens are really nice to have and it fits nicely in my hands, I am certain it is just too large for me to want to carry around anywhere or store in my pocket. Now the NEW 3DS XL is even larger than *that* and I have no smaller option! What a shame.

I also was REALLY looking forward to the changeable faceplates on the smaller one. Ugh.

I just wish it came in blue, like my old DS, so my wife doesn't know I bought a new one.

I don't think its right, if Europe, Australia & Japan gets more choices. Why can't we get choices too. There are a small percent or if not all wanted the standard 3DS because of the Face-plates.

Maybe I can buy the colored buttons by themselves and replace the US XL buttons with the sweetness colored buttons from the Euro and Japanese systems...I MAY just do that....

They probably saw that sales of the XL in America were beating out the others by a wide margin. Why release the smaller ones when the market for them is....so small?

How did this explain why it's not coming to the U.S. again? It seems to me they just chose a different way to tell us they decided to not bring it over. Thanks for the click bait Eddie.

<< LINK REMOVED >> The article states that NoA used it's knowledge of the region it's in charge of and based on our demographics/past sales they decided that the XL would be the best seller here.

What else do you want them to say? I personally think they are spot on. From the stuff I have seen the XL versions of past DSi/3DS have sold the best.

I agree that the XL most likely does way better than the regular (I really don't want to waste my time looking up the numbers) however the article does not specify that. What was quoted here nearly states that they felt it was the best decision for our territory.

Well I would have to assume so otherwise they would not of done it. They did not give an actual for sure explanation as to why they only sell the XL here.

who the hell would prefer the normal size over xl?

its like asking if you want 2005 xbox or a 2014 xbox.

and for the record, im not a fat slob that lives on doritos (though i would if i wanted to, cool ranch doritos just taste GODLY). i dont even live in the US.

but the xl screen is just great. i had a ds and a dsi xl, whenever i lend my xl to my gf so we can play mario kart, its horrible so see such a small screen

<< LINK REMOVED >> Not relevant to the 3DS, but the older XBox had better backwards compatibility. And if someone asked me if I wanted a PS3 Phat or PS3 Super Slim I would take the Phat. But back on topic I like the non XL model because I have small hands, my 3DS is thicker though because I have an extended battery pack on it. Making the smaller unit thicker is easier to hold than a thinner large unit.

<< LINK REMOVED >> I disagree. I bought the 3DS when it came out, but ignored the XL when it was released. I got lucky and found an XL that someone clearly lost and never came back for it. I use the XL now, but every now and then, I'll use my regular 3DS and realize just how more beautiful the images are on the smaller one. Personally, I think the XL is for people with big hands and poor vision.

I wonder how the cover plates would've sold in America. One of the selling points of the smaller new 3ds is that the front and back is removable. Maybe they could have made quite a bit of money on those.

I guess the Japanese share the same sentiment as most Europeans: in America everything NEEDS to be bigger. I mean: the cities are, the Big Macs are (seriously, they are!), % of obese people, Skyscrapers, houses, cars, the military, the feeling of self-importance, the (false) sense of freedom... and I don't mean that in any unpleasant way, really, but it's just a sentiment that runs in my country... You may as well have bigger hands than the ' usual' people, right? Although... the Dutch are the tallest people in the world, yet they sell regular sized condoms here. Hmmm...

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> Greetings from the quaint village of Son ;-). That reminds me I really need to get myself some real Forest Balls at Jan de Groot's!! Back on topic, I don't know in what time you grew up in, but in the late eighties Peter Gabriel had a BIG hit with Big Time. The lyrics are just about this sentiment I mentioned, that everything in America needed to be big, somehow, certainly in that era. It's hilarious. More so in that it became a hit in America, while the Americans were being made a bit ridiculous in that song. Google it if you don't know it :-)

While I question their decision a little bit. I'm glad if they chose one the bring over to the US its the the XL. I myself prefer the bigger screen and its more comfortable for my hands to use.
