Nintendo has long touted the Wii U's new tablet-like GamePad controller as a feature that will set the system apart from the competition. However, in a new interview with the Wall Street Journal's AllThingsD, Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime said the system's new Miiverse social network stands to be the console's "killer app."

Nintendo has high hopes for Miiverse.
Nintendo has high hopes for Miiverse.

“I think that [Miiverse] will pleasantly surprise people,” Fils-Aime said. “As the network grows and the installed base grows, it will prove to be a true killer application for the system, and I say this loving what we have done with Nintendo TVii and loving all the games. Until you try it and experience it, you may not totally understand it.”

Fils-Aime added that what makes Miiverse special is that it is the only social network exclusively built for gaming. And this, he said, will make the network a "key differentiator compared to other companies in our space."

Nintendo's Miiverse is the first thing players will see when they boot up the Wii U. On this screen, players will be able to see games, apps, and other entertainment content that either they have used or expressed interest in, or that their friends are using. Gamers can also share text and visual messages with other players through Miiverse.

Miiverse will be exclusive to the Wii U at launch next month, but will later be available for the 3DS, PC, and any smartphone or Web-enabled device. The Wii U arrives with 23 games in North America on November 18 beginning at $299. The system hits Australia and Europe on November 30 and comes to Japan December 8.

I certainly hope that the social application attached to this "next-gen" console isn't the killer app for the system. If that's the truth, then the system will probably fail. The killer app for any new console better be a freaking video game and not some Facebook clone.

Games certainly are "apps". I will never get it through my head that games are not because that would be untrue. Also, you shouldn't be so rude telling people to shut up, it's immature.

@scatterbrain007 He said it first. It was more of a quote than saying that. Sorry if it sent you an e-mail like as if I sent it to you. That's Glitchspot for you. When I click reply, it replies to more than one person automatically, which is totally stupid.

@mario-nin-freak @scatterbrain007 Apps are software, guess what games are software. People with no technical knowledge should shut up. That means you.

@mateyman @aryanbrar @scatterbrain007 "which something is put" It's not talking about something related to it, try inserting the word "itself" after something. An app is a special use of itself. A game for a game console is not a "special" use of the console. Special refers to something beyond what it's precisely made for, is it not? The App Store from Apple has twisted your mind. You should know better than to trust Apple with names :P They are the ones who use a name that doesn't start with a capital letter.

@mario-nin-freak @aryanbrar @scatterbrain007 dude you just killed your own argument. If application is defined as "the special use or purpose to which something is put" then games are an application of the console. A game is an App for a Xbox/Pc etc. The games can be applied to something else, but it acts as an application for the hardware. So, you're still wrong. People who don't understand grammar should shut up.

@aryanbrar @scatterbrain007 "Apps" stands for applications. Application defined: "the special use or purpose to which something is put". A game can have an application, but it is not one. People who don't know grammar should shut up.

This doesn't sound like anything revolutionary or genius.

Also the quote telling it'll be the "key differentiator compared to other companies in our space."sounds a bit too bold from what it looks like from here.

It's basically Steam, PSN, or XBL on the Wii(U). They're kinda late with this, actually.
