Nintendo Switch Could "Redefine" Gaming, Ubisoft Says

"With the Nintendo Switch's unique capacities and design, Nintendo could again redefine the way we play games."

We've known for a long time that Ubisoft is optimistic about Nintendo's new console. Now that it's been announced as the Nintendo Switch, the company's CEO has put out a statement in which he claims the console could be transformative for gaming.

"With the Nintendo Switch's unique capacities and design, Nintendo could again redefine the way we play games," Yves Guillemot said in a statement that Ubisoft sent to GameSpot. "The Nintendo Switch is accessible at its core and also seizes on the growing trends of sharing more experiences and playing anywhere at any time. Ubisoft and Nintendo enjoy a long-standing partnership and we are currently developing a number of games for the platform, including Just Dance 2017. We look forward to sharing more at a later date."

Now Playing: Nintendo Switch Announcement Impressions

Ubisoft is among the dozens of partners for Nintendo for the Nintendo Switch. As stated, Ubisoft is bringing Just Dance 2017 to the console as well as other titles to be announced later.

At the end of September, Guillemot said the Nintendo Switch will put Nintendo "back in the race." Earlier in the year, he said the system will be "easy to use" and one that allows for "a different experience from what exists today."

No Caption Provided

The Wii U performed below expectations, selling only 13.02 million consoles since its 2012 release. By comparison, the Wii sold more than 100 million units in its lifetime.

As rumored, the Nintendo Switch system is a console/mobile hybrid, allowing you to play in the home or on the go. The console has detachable controllers for on-the-go gaming and a docking station for when you're at home. Pricing has not been announced, but we know the Nintendo Switch will come out in March 2017.

"Redefine gaming AGAIN"? Sorry but Nintendo hasn't redefined gaming yet... Sure they've had some cool features, but certainly nothing Sony or MS just HAD to follow up on. Nintendo has to stop relying on gimmicky devices and make a console to actually compete, and being a hybrid doesn't do it any favors either.... They need to also stop relying on Mario and Zelda. Come on Nintendo, we all know you can do better than this, fire whoever is making these consoles and get someone who knows what they're doing. Some of my favorite childhood memories are of me and my mom passing the controller back and forth playing Zelda, I want Nintendo to succeed but I'm afraid their attempts at "Revolutionizing" the industry will put them out of contention all together.

As much as I love his optimism, unless there are some critical features we don't know about yet, with practical applications both Nintendo and 3rd parties have grasped, I fail to see how a portable console will revolutionise gaming, even though the local multiplayer anywhere is a pretty nifty hook.

"Nintendo Switch Could "Redefine" Gaming, Ubisoft Says"

Yea right, Said a company who's invested in it being a success, but for people with small hands ? not so much.

I love hype before the actual device is in peoples hands....it makes it sooo easy to get pre-orders sales as apposed to being realistic and being suspicious of that tiny controler.

So when was the last time that Ubisoft actually released a decent game? It's all been a bunch of rehashed soulless nonsense lately unfortunately. FarCry RIP. AC RIP. Watch Dogs... ha what a joke from that start. South Park... Please, please, please don't 'f it up.

(ok, ok, Ghost Recon Wildlands looks compelling, but I suspect typical Ubi overhype there).

@TwinStripeUK: i will say a x2 but customized, x1 would been to weak to match ps4 or xbox one's spec. hopefully it somewhere above a ps4 pro specs.

Ummmmmm..... Just Dance? So? Even OUYA can run that.

Hopefully they'll find a way to cram 50GB+++ into those ancient cartridges. Otherwise Nintendo fans are going to get Skyrim "light", Watch Dogs 2 "light". Lesser versions of the real games. lol (If they get any big 3rd party AAA titles at all.)

@wtf_666: You realize that SD cards can go up to 256GB, right? That's 5x bigger than dual-layer Blu-Ray discs (50GB), which is what both PS4 and Xbox One use (also Wii U).

@wtf_666: You call the cartridges ancient yet 32GB SD cards cost $10 retail...have faster read speeds than Blu-Ray and won't skip when being moved around in a portable device.

FYI: Skyrim is about 7 GB.

"Redefine gaming". As in what companies should avoid doing? Another handheld cartridge based system. Nintendo might as well bring the 8-Track back.

This console sounds fantastic but I honestly do not care what platform I am playing games on. If Nintendo were to release a new Zelda, Pokémon, or any other game on Nintendo64 right this second, I would probably buy it without hesitation.

Huh. Let's see here. You can play weak looking games on a weak looking tablet. Or, you can play those same weak looking games on a TV instead. Yes, this is truly revolutionary.

Not like mirror screen on tablets, with a bluetooth controller can do the same thing or anything.

@Thanatos2k: This is not about me buying a tablet, it is about the majority of the consumer already having it. Most people aren't buying newer tablets anymore. Why would they spend $500+ for a tablet just so that it would connect to a TV when their current one is fine. They would be much better off spending around $300 for a switch instead.

@Thanatos2k: Nope. People aren't buying tablets because they are too expensive to justify for the few new features. The switch, on the other hand, is cheap and could be used to play console games, an upgrade from the mobile games on tablets. There are currently very few AAA games on tablets and they are often freemium titles filled with in-app purchases.

@n0on3: "And what features is the switch lacking, exactly?"

A touch screen. Battery life, most likely. 1080p resolution on new games.

"Only mobile games use those"

Yeah the DS and 3DS would never use a touch screen or have a stylus. Nintendo handhelds never had touch screens. Only mobile games use those.

"If it was compared with current consoles"

It's going to compare very, very poorly with current consoles, in terms of hardware, storage, and especially in terms of online and digital distribution.

@Thanatos2k: Can you tell me a list of all the successful AAA titles that fully utilised a touch screen? (third parties only and that means the touchscreen is used for more than just minigames and inventory management). And how would you know all of this when it has not even been announced yet? The battery might not be very good right now because they haven't optimised it and even then, 3 hours is most likely good enough to a whole day and if need more than that you could always carry battery packs. Even most gaming laptops can't go for that long. 1080p is an unnecessary feature. Even games on the PS4 and XBONE like Halo 5 doesn't fully have it. I am not going to notice the difference between 900p and 1080p during actual gameplay.

"Only mobile games use those." Exactly why I don't have a 3DS. It is full of mobile games with iaps. 99% of the things that most games uses the touch screen for can be easily replaced with normal buttons. Instead of touching on an enemy every time you want to attack, you press A.

I'm sure you won't need any help finding a few dozen on there.

Let's go with The World Ends With You, a game that wouldn't have worked without the touch screen.

"3 hours is most likely good enough"

3 hours is an absolute joke, and wouldn't be remotely viable in the range of a usable portable gaming device.

"1080p is an unnecessary feature"

If this was 2009 perhaps.

"Even games on the PS4 and XBONE like Halo 5 doesn't fully have it"

This is supposed to be a new console, not a 4 year old console, right?

"I am not going to notice the difference between 900p and 1080p during actual gameplay."

lol, let me guess, the eye can't see past 30 fps either?

"Exactly why I don't have a 3DS. It is full of mobile games with iaps."

Annnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnd there goes your credibility, what little was left.

@Thanatos2k: "I'm sure you won't need any help finding a few dozen on there." Exactly, there are only several dozens out of the thousands that fully utilised a touch screen and was made by a third party dev, using it in a way that no other methods of input could. Next time, read my comment carefully.

"If this was 2009 perhaps." If you are a PC "master race" gamer perhaps, but most people aren't.

"lol, let me guess, the eye can't see past 30 fps either?" That is not what I am saying. 1080p could be dynamically resized to 900p to preserve a 60 fps experience. I would prefer frames over quality.

"This is supposed to be a new console, not a 4-year-old console, right?" Yes, but you need to compare it to a handheld like the 3DS or the vita.

"3 hours is an absolute joke" For you maybe, but then again, most people aren't going to play it for 3 hours on a daily basis.

I am getting tired of this argument, it is getting nowhere and you aren't even reading my comment carefully. We should both just wait for the switch to release in several months time and see what will happen. For all we know, they might change the specs between now and then and this would have all been for nothing.

"If you are a PC "master race" gamer perhaps, but most people aren't."

Ah, pretending like console gamers don't care about hardware power. This is easily refuted:

http://www.gamespot.com/articles/study-people-buy-ps4-for-graphics-xbox-one-for-bra/1100-6425537/

"I would prefer frames over quality."

Implying that you have to choose one or the other. Only on bad hardware.

"Yes, but you need to compare it to a handheld like the 3DS or the vita."

Why? This is supposed to replace the Wii U. It's a new console. Because if it isn't a new console then when is Nintendo's new console coming? They've stopped making games for the Wii U.

"most people aren't going to play it for 3 hours on a daily basis."

You're making up the magical casual demographic. Sorry, the casuals only liked the Wii and moved on. They're not coming back. They have phones, and they don't need this.

@Thanatos2k: Since the level of ignorance in this comment section is too high, I am going to stop arguing. At the end of the day, who cares. It's not like I have gained any intelligence from commenting here and whoever "wins" this argument aren't going to influence Nintendo and change the course of the future anyways. Besides, I believe we both have better things to do than argue about what might happen to the switch.

@Thanatos2k:I am not fleeing, I am ending this battle. As proof, I am going to comment one last time.

First of all, I am not saying that "everyone here is ignorant". I am saying only you are.

"I can make up things too. Did you know 55% of squirrels drive convertibles?" What does that have to do with anything? Well, it doesn't and only further proves my point that you are ignorant. Instead of listing the good touch screen dependant games, you simply gave me a list of all the games and hopes that it is enough of an excuse for "evidence".

"Ah, pretending like console gamers don't care about hardware power. This is easily refuted:" No it is not. That is an unreliable study, with only 4400 out of several hundred million people who plays games participating. That is a sample size way too small and is only focused on the US. Because noooooooooooobody buys consoles in Europe or Africa or Asia you know.

"Why? This is supposed to replace the Wii U. It's a new console. Because if it isn't a new console then when is Nintendo's new console coming? They've stopped making games for the Wii U." The switch is a handheld, and the switch+dock is the console. After all, we have only known about the switch as a portable from the video and there has been no official information/indication or reliable leaks about its performance with the dock attached.

"Implying that you have to choose one or the other. Only on bad hardware." Of course you have to choose. Unless you have a $1300 PC, you will always have to choose.

"You're making up the magical casual demographic." The switch is not aimed at casuals, but rather gamers who aren't YouTubers who spends 5 hours a day every day in front of a game. In fact, your claim that "3 hours is an absolute joke" is not what most people think. https://www.statista.com/statistics/273311/time-spent-gaming-weekly-in-the-uk-by-age/ and http://bgr.com/2014/05/14/time-spent-playing-video-games/ shows that most people will play for less than or around 21 hours a week, which is the switch's power time if it was recharged everyday. And that is not factoring in the time that the switch will be docked and not using its battery.

"1080p resolution on new games." It is not like the Switch's specs has already been released and all of its drivers have been made to perfection and its games polished.

@Thanatos2k:

"you "don't care" with a wall of text" I never said I didn't care, I simply wanted to stop.

"I could only assume you pulled it out of thin air, which you did" No, I did not. I have played hundreds of games on the DS (which I still occasionally use) and very few of them I thought was very good and used the touch screen in a special way. A lot of the time with touch screens, the devs just shoehorns in clunky mechanics that breaks the immersion and fun of the game. And even then, touch screens could get easily damaged from being pressed too much and too hard and the stylus could easily fall out from being pulled in and out too many times.

"But the dock does nothing but connect it to a TV" We don't know that yet. What about their patents then?

"Plane flights, car rides" I rarely go on plane flights and car rides for longer than 3 hours, and even then I don't play games for 3 hours straight. Get real, if you played for 3 hours straight on a car you would get nauseous.

"And you don't have to choose on a PC far cheaper than that." This is only true if you live where taxes on PC parts are low and the parts are sold at MSRP and you already have a monitor. Where I live, it costs $1500 for a 1080p good gaming rig if you buy the parts from a store, peripherals not included. Besides, $1300 is probably the minimum for 60fps 4K gaming, and that is not including the price of a 4K monitor.

"Are you suggesting other regions are inexplicably different?" Yes, they are. See my above charts.

"Sounds like you don't always have to choose" I didn't know you could hear text.

@n0on3: Ah there it is, showing how much you "don't care" with a wall of text.

"What does that have to do with anything?"

I was making things up, like you did when you claimed only "dozens" out of "thousands" of games used the touchscreen on the 3DS/DS as a core part of the game. It was a hilariously unsourced untrue statement, so I could only assume you pulled it out of thin air, which you did.

"with only 4400 out of several hundred million people who plays games participating. That is a sample size way too small and is only focused on the US."

4400 is plenty large enough of a sample size to get definitive results. Take a statistics class when you get to college. What does it only being from the US have to do with anything. Are you suggesting other regions are inexplicably different? And even if they were, your statement was still wrong for the US.

"The switch is a handheld, and the switch+dock is the console."

But the dock does nothing but connect it to a TV. My Vita can connect to a TV, but it isn't a console. So where's the console?

"Of course you have to choose. Unless you have a $1300 PC, you will always have to choose."

Sounds like you don't always have to choose. And you don't have to choose on a PC far cheaper than that.

"The switch is not aimed at casuals"

Of course it is.

"most people will play for less than or around 21 hours a week"

That tells nothing about the size of the chunks of time they play. Since you love making points by "what feels right" moments, I can come up with all sorts of scenarios as to why a 3 hour charge time is unacceptable. Plane flights, car rides.....

@datriax: Yeah, all of the tablets that can play Skyrim and Zelda BotW. BoTW is hardly weak looking. You are also forgetting that you have no clue what the dock is or does yet. The "supplemental computing" patent could point to increased performance when combined with the dock. I'll buy a new Zelda or Metroid or even Mario over the next CoD or (343) Halo game. And you still don't know if the system is based on the Tegra X1 or K1, which the X1 would hardly constitute "weak."

4K 60fps =/= gameplay
