Nintendo Switch Could "Redefine" Gaming, Ubisoft Says

We've known for a long time that Ubisoft is optimistic about Nintendo's new console. Now that it's been announced as the Nintendo Switch, the company's CEO has put out a statement in which he claims the console could be transformative for gaming.

"With the Nintendo Switch's unique capacities and design, Nintendo could again redefine the way we play games," Yves Guillemot said in a statement that Ubisoft sent to GameSpot. "The Nintendo Switch is accessible at its core and also seizes on the growing trends of sharing more experiences and playing anywhere at any time. Ubisoft and Nintendo enjoy a long-standing partnership and we are currently developing a number of games for the platform, including Just Dance 2017. We look forward to sharing more at a later date."

Ubisoft is among the dozens of partners for Nintendo for the Nintendo Switch. As stated, Ubisoft is bringing Just Dance 2017 to the console as well as other titles to be announced later.

At the end of September, Guillemot said the Nintendo Switch will put Nintendo "back in the race." Earlier in the year, he said the system will be "easy to use" and one that allows for "a different experience from what exists today."

The Wii U performed below expectations, selling only 13.02 million consoles since its 2012 release. By comparison, the Wii sold more than 100 million units in its lifetime.

As rumored, the Nintendo Switch system is a console/mobile hybrid, allowing you to play in the home or on the go. The console has detachable controllers for on-the-go gaming and a docking station for when you're at home. Pricing has not been announced, but we know the Nintendo Switch will come out in March 2017.

How does this thing redefine the way we play games? You can play the games on the TV or on the tablet on the go. Still the same games. There is nothing new being introduced. It is just in a more unified and mobile package. It is a glorified tablet with accessories. The weak hardware will hold it back and we will be dealing with another weak Nintendo console that will limit the scope of the games available for it.

@BassMan:It's a mobile home console. You don't need to exclusively play those $60 games at home, which is currently how it is with PS4/Xbone/PC. Nintendo also designed multiplayer functionality into it,
so you can also play multiplayer games (virtually) anywhere.

Don't underestimate the power of parents looking for ways of occupying their children on long trips.

@Thanatos2k: I don't think Android tablets play Legend of Zelda or Skyrim, nor do I buy one for it's "selection of games" (that's just personal opinion. Good for you if you like Infinity Blade, if that's still a thing.)

I'm not concerned about what the Switch can't do, I'm more concerned with what it is capable of.

@GuillermoJP: Yet the trailer featured adults using the device. As an adult and a hardcore gamer, I don't care about mobile gaming. I know some adults do like portables, but I don't really care for it and I personally do not know many adults who do. They are marketing this as a console. I want a powerful console with top notch games on it. Not some glorified tablet with accessories.

There is a reason that the Gamecube was my last Nintendo console. Nintendo has lost many of their former customers since they switched to a casual focus and they are doing very little to bring them back. They are not doing anything with this console to attract the dependable hardcore gamer. Casuals will come and go as evidenced by the crazy success of the Wii and epic fail of the Wii U. Nintendo no longer makes many top tier games and their hardware has been shit going on 3 generations now. Nintendo needs to do more to get people excited.

@sellingthings: Yeah, mobile gaming doesn't appeal to me that much. I have a Vita and have had multiple smart phones that are more than capable, but I rarely play games on the go. The only time I have really played much is on planes or when I am waiting a while for something. I prefer the big screen with the surround sound experience. As for the poopin.... that is my quiet time. I like to relax and reflect on things or think about things I am going to do. hehe :)

@BassMan: That's fine if you don't care for having mobility when it comes to games.

We'll see more of the specs as time goes on (pretty sure they're floating around online), along with 3rd party devs like From Software (of Dark Souls fame).

Pointing out also that it's the first console I've heard of to technically include two controllers (since NES anyways)

@iandizion713: I am primarily a PC Gamer, but Nintendo is not making games for PC now are they? So, if I want to play the new Zelda, I have to play it on a Nintendo console. I am being forced to play games on shit hardware and those games are being limited by that hardware. There in lies the problem.

@bizarrovampire: LOL. I make my own schedule. As long as shit gets done, that is all that matters. I am not some little bitch that needs to be supervised and told what to do. So, I can take a break and post whenever I want. Thanks for your concern though.

I care about quality and have high standards. I don't like when there is no option available and I am forced to play below those standards. This is why I dislike exclusives on console. They do not give you choice. The game may be broken and runs like shit... Too bad, just bend over and take it. Worst.

@iandizion713: I will probably buy a Switch for the new Zelda. At least it will be a little bit future proof as opposed to the Wii U. However, I am sure I will not be enjoying the game to the fullest due to the hardware compromises. I am sure I will rotate the camera and be "WTF is up with this frame rate? This judder is terrible!". LOL. That is what it was like playing Uncharted 4 on PS4. Damn 30fps was very distracting.

@BassMan: It shouldnt be that bad though. Nintendo does pretty good working with their limitations. Just wont look as pretty at first, then after 15 mins youll be so immersed you wont tell the difference. At first i saw Skyward Swords jaggies, but after while, it grew on me.

I predict that it will sell ok but nintendo just doesn't have the same appeal to kids these days. Unless this is actually going to replace the DS/play DS games then this could be a top seller. Depends on the price really too.
