"The Nintendo Switch feels like the culmination of years of hardware growing pains from both Nintendo and Nvidia. Unlike the Wii U GamePad, you no longer have to worry about being tethered to your TV. Because the Switch houses all of its processing power in its portable form factor, it truly allows you to carry console power with you wherever you go. The fact that it’s able to do that while being lighter than the Wii U’s GamePad is a bit of a technical marvel in my book." -- Jimmy Thang [Full review]

Nintendo Switch FAQ

What is Nintendo Switch?

No Caption Provided

Nintendo Switch is a hybrid device designed to operate as both a home console and a handheld device. The Switch console is a tablet-like screen with two detachable "Joy-Con" controllers that slide into place at its sides. The three ways to play the console are as follows:

  • TV Mode: You can insert Switch into a docking station, which allows it to be played on your television. The Joy-Con controllers can then be used wirelessly to play games from your couch; or they can be attached to a grip accessory to provide a more traditional controller experience. A Switch Pro controller is also available to use, but is sold separately.
  • Handheld Mode: You can eject Switch from its docking station and take it with you to play on the go. The Joy-Con controllers are attached directly to the sides of the screen, making it resemble a Wii U gamepad that can function on its own.
  • Tabletop Mode: You can setup the Switch's inbuilt kickstand on any flat surface, and detach its Joy-Con controllers, allowing one to two players to enjoy games wherever they like.

When does the console come out?

The Nintendo Switch launches on March 3 simultaneously in the US, Canada, Japan, "major European countries," Hong Kong, and other territories.

How much is Nintendo Switch?

The Nintendo Switch costs $300 in the US. Pricing was only shared for the US and Japan (where it'll cost 29,980 yen). For Europe, Nintendo advised checking with local retailers for more specific prices.

How do Nintendo Switch's Joy-Con controllers work?

Each Joy-Con includes a full set of buttons, and each can act as a standalone controller. They also sport an IR Motion Camera that gives each controller motion support, and even allows them to detect different hand gestures.

In addition, the Joy-Con controllers feature what's called HD Rumble, which gives them the ability to convey different types of vibrations. For instance, a controller can simulate the vibration of shaking a cup with an ice cube in it.

No Caption Provided

The right Joy-Con includes a sensor that can scan Amiibo, while a capture button on the left Joy-Con allows you to take screenshots that you can share with others. And each Joy-Con has a strap you can attach to your wrist.

Aside from the console, you get left and right Joy-Con controllers, Joy-Con wrist straps, the Joy-Con Grip, the Nintendo Switch Dock, an HDMI cable, and an A/C adapter. See our full gallery of everything that comes in the box.

You have the choice between two different versions of the console: one with the gray Joy-Con controllers we've seen in past Nintendo announcements, and another with one of each of the newly announced blue and red Joy-Con controllers. Both editions have the same recommended retail price.

How much do the different Nintendo Switch controllers and accessories cost?

Each Switch controller and accessory has different prices. You can check them out below:

  • Nintendo Switch Pro Controller - $70
  • Joy-Con Controllers (set of two, L and R) - $80
  • Joy-Con L or Joy-Con R (sold separately) - $50
  • Joy-Con Charging Grip - $30
  • Nintendo Switch Dock Set - $90
  • Joy-Con Wheel (set of two) - $15

It important to note that the Nintendo Switch Dock Set is included with the console, as is one set of Joy-Con controllers. Take a look at our gallery of controllers and accessories for more details.

What are the Switch's specs?

The Switch uses a 6.2-inch 1280x720 resolution multi-touch capacitive screen. It also use 32GB of internal storage, which you can expand with a microSDXC card. The Switch utilizes an Nvidia Tegra-based system-on-a-chip (SOC) for its processor. The console will also support local 8-player multiplayer.

In terms of audio, the Switch sports two speakers at the bottom and a 3.5mm headphone jack at the top.

What's the battery life like?

Nintendo asserts that the Switch's battery life can last over six hours, but will vary depending on the game and usage conditions. For example, the company says users should be able to get roughly three hours out of the Switch while playing The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. The Switch has a USB-C charging port, which is located at the bottom of the unit.

How much do Switch games cost?

There are different price rates for each of the games. For example, the party game 1, 2, Switch retails for just $49.99, while The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Arms, and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe all have $59.99 price tags, indicating $60 is likely to be the standard price for Switch games.

What physical format do Switch Games come on?

Switch games come as cartridges called "game cards" and are inserted in from the top of the console. It's also possible to purchase games digitally.

Does the Switch comes bundled with any games?

Unlike the Wii and Wii U, the Switch won't come bundled with any games. According to Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime, the exclusion had to do with the console's price, the priority of including everything that consumers need to use the console, and giving them the freedom to decide what software they want to buy.

Gamespot forgot to mention the Joycons are flimsy when attached to the main unit and the battery life is 2.5 hours tops. Two things a revised design should fix. With annual revisions to technology buying a 'new' portable at launch is a bad idea. Call it Redsyrup's Law.

Can you save your gameplay to the sd cards separately or does it have to save to the game card or internally?

What about needing a smartphone to use party chat? That's some nifty information people would like to know, such as those who never bothered with getting a smartphone will now be excluded from chat feature that will not be available at launch.

@Bread_or_Decide: Me for one. Never had need to "upgrade" to one. I don't mobile game, my laptop serves as a far more practical way to surf the web and watch content/movies/tv shows. Getting a smartphone is simply not a priority when my old phone serves the purpose of phones just fine, why waste the money when money is always tight?

@DanZillaUK: When my iPhone broke and I wanted to save for another I got an LG android from Metro PCS. It costed me 30 bucks and worked better than the iPhone 4 that I broke. Regardless, I still wanted an later got an iPhone 5 but my point is. No one has to break the budget to have any old smartphone. Personal preference and parental restriction is what I can see to be the only reason people don't have a smartphone.

@mikes1025: I see your point here, but it's still a bummer that this may be a requirement for online chat and whatever else this app is going to do for the system. I'm pumped about a new Nintendo system, but this may be a bummer. Can't say for sure because who really knows lol

@mikes1025: Add the cost to use smartphone features like internet and whatever else it offers and it all builds up to just over the point of comfortable. When I say money is tight I don't mean "I can afford to live a little here and there" I mean "I scrimped and saved my ass off for the switch and Zelda alone, anything else will be going into negative numbers" Buying a smartphone for the sole reason of using a chat/party app is beyond wasteful from my perspective as everything else a smartphone can do, my current phone and laptop combined can do just as good, and in the later case much better.

A smartphone is just not a viable option for some, so a practice like this (given I do not fully understand it as not much info will be available until after the switch is released and we can examine every detail) excludes them. It may not be a large % of their audience, but it is a % none the less that they seem to give a "meh, their own fault for not having more money to throw at us" vibe.

Though I do appreciate your point, it's just not an option for me when things like that cut into food/gas/electric money.

@Bread_or_Decide: Many people who actually can function without them. And that's besides the point. If Nintendo is going to charge for its online service, party chat should be a given.

Can anyone tell me if there will be a "Day one edition" version of the Nintendo Switch? If there is, will the "Day one" console be any different to the standard edition such as: Any bundles/games that come with it and stuff like that.

I have pre ordered it to come on March 3rd so I would like to know.

Thanks for those that will hopefully give me a great answer, I would appreciate it.

@strongparkour: There is no "day one" version of the Switch. The only official versions there are are the grey Joy Con version and the red/blue Joy Con version. Any other bundles would be retailer specific. At least in America.

Everything I need to know is $300 WITHOUT a pack in game, NOTHING worth a crap at launch besides Zelda (which I can play on my U), no other decent games within months with Mario being almost a year away and I have to pay for their crappy online service BUT I get to play ONE "free" 30-year old game each month. I have owned every Nintendo system since the NES........but I am out.

@inkman66: I feel that pain. Just give it time, brother. They'll make a deal just for you this holiday season. I'm getting it because I skipped out on the U and I pretty much see this as a good sell. Plus I can play Zelda and Mario Kart on it.

@titang1: The preorders being sold out thing is a bit misleading though. All that has happened is that Nintendo allowed X amount of preorders and those slots have been filled. However, no outlet I'm aware of has reported how many slots Nintendo actually opened up. It could have been only 100 slots, I don't think it's really that low but the point is Nintendo is pulling a bit of a trick here. Headlines say "preorders sold out" but that doesn't mean everyone and their grandma is rushing to get one of these, it just means whatever target Nintendo set has been hit and there's no telling how high or low that target is.

@rdelorne: 2 million units are for sell at launch in United States. Once they hit that target they will send more. People wanting one will not have to wait to long after launch to find one I think.

Nintendo is trying to catch the casual market again wich is sad because they are so out of touch that they didn't even notice that the market as moved on to cell phones/tablet.

But...This will still sell better than wii u and maybe even better than xbox one because I think a lot of exclusif games will be coming. Yes the launch is not perfect but most of the time a gaming system as poor launch title.

Anybody thinking that nintendo is doomed is crazy. They still have '85 nes money in the bank. Plus...right now pre orders are almost sold out everywhere.

I'm not buying this day one but I will wait and see what are all the quiet studios from nintendo working on...

@supamastergamer: I think it will do better than WiiU if for no other reason than it is legitimately cool while trying to explain WiiU's "hook" was a hassle. Still, I can't see this console being a success, I think it will still flop like WiiU did. WiiU's (and Wii's before it) biggest problem is a lack of third party support and Switch looks set to continue that trend. A) It is underpowered compared even to PS4 and B) just look at the anemic launch lineup. No Mass Effect Andromeda mentioned, no Red Dead Redemption 2, none of the big AAA releases are coming to this thing.

@supamastergamer: Those mini games are used to show "the casual stuff" off. Sony has them too for the PS4. It was the game with the shiny robots inside the brand new controller with x and y as the new features.

@supamastergamer: Yeah probably. I don't care about that, but I think this really appeals to core gamers. Casual people (ie people who don't actually play games) are off playing massively sub-NES games on some phone or whatever :-/
