"The Nintendo Switch feels like the culmination of years of hardware growing pains from both Nintendo and Nvidia. Unlike the Wii U GamePad, you no longer have to worry about being tethered to your TV. Because the Switch houses all of its processing power in its portable form factor, it truly allows you to carry console power with you wherever you go. The fact that it’s able to do that while being lighter than the Wii U’s GamePad is a bit of a technical marvel in my book." -- Jimmy Thang [Full review]

Nintendo Switch FAQ

What is Nintendo Switch?

No Caption Provided

Nintendo Switch is a hybrid device designed to operate as both a home console and a handheld device. The Switch console is a tablet-like screen with two detachable "Joy-Con" controllers that slide into place at its sides. The three ways to play the console are as follows:

  • TV Mode: You can insert Switch into a docking station, which allows it to be played on your television. The Joy-Con controllers can then be used wirelessly to play games from your couch; or they can be attached to a grip accessory to provide a more traditional controller experience. A Switch Pro controller is also available to use, but is sold separately.
  • Handheld Mode: You can eject Switch from its docking station and take it with you to play on the go. The Joy-Con controllers are attached directly to the sides of the screen, making it resemble a Wii U gamepad that can function on its own.
  • Tabletop Mode: You can setup the Switch's inbuilt kickstand on any flat surface, and detach its Joy-Con controllers, allowing one to two players to enjoy games wherever they like.

When does the console come out?

The Nintendo Switch launches on March 3 simultaneously in the US, Canada, Japan, "major European countries," Hong Kong, and other territories.

How much is Nintendo Switch?

The Nintendo Switch costs $300 in the US. Pricing was only shared for the US and Japan (where it'll cost 29,980 yen). For Europe, Nintendo advised checking with local retailers for more specific prices.

How do Nintendo Switch's Joy-Con controllers work?

Each Joy-Con includes a full set of buttons, and each can act as a standalone controller. They also sport an IR Motion Camera that gives each controller motion support, and even allows them to detect different hand gestures.

In addition, the Joy-Con controllers feature what's called HD Rumble, which gives them the ability to convey different types of vibrations. For instance, a controller can simulate the vibration of shaking a cup with an ice cube in it.

The right Joy-Con includes a sensor that can scan Amiibo, while a capture button on the left Joy-Con allows you to take screenshots that you can share with others. And each Joy-Con has a strap you can attach to your wrist.

Aside from the console, you get left and right Joy-Con controllers, Joy-Con wrist straps, the Joy-Con Grip, the Nintendo Switch Dock, an HDMI cable, and an A/C adapter. See our full gallery of everything that comes in the box.

You have the choice between two different versions of the console: one with the gray Joy-Con controllers we've seen in past Nintendo announcements, and another with one of each of the newly announced blue and red Joy-Con controllers. Both editions have the same recommended retail price.

How much do the different Nintendo Switch controllers and accessories cost?

Each Switch controller and accessory has different prices. You can check them out below:

  • Nintendo Switch Pro Controller - $70
  • Joy-Con Controllers (set of two, L and R) - $80
  • Joy-Con L or Joy-Con R (sold separately) - $50
  • Joy-Con Charging Grip - $30
  • Nintendo Switch Dock Set - $90
  • Joy-Con Wheel (set of two) - $15

It important to note that the Nintendo Switch Dock Set is included with the console, as is one set of Joy-Con controllers. Take a look at our gallery of controllers and accessories for more details.

What are the Switch's specs?

The Switch uses a 6.2-inch 1280x720 resolution multi-touch capacitive screen. It also use 32GB of internal storage, which you can expand with a microSDXC card. The Switch utilizes an Nvidia Tegra-based system-on-a-chip (SOC) for its processor. The console will also support local 8-player multiplayer.

In terms of audio, the Switch sports two speakers at the bottom and a 3.5mm headphone jack at the top.

What's the battery life like?

Nintendo asserts that the Switch's battery life can last over six hours, but will vary depending on the game and usage conditions. For example, the company says users should be able to get roughly three hours out of the Switch while playing The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. The Switch has a USB-C charging port, which is located at the bottom of the unit.

How much do Switch games cost?

There are different price rates for each of the games. For example, the party game 1, 2, Switch retails for just $49.99, while The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Arms, and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe all have $59.99 price tags, indicating $60 is likely to be the standard price for Switch games.

What physical format do Switch Games come on?

Switch games come as cartridges called "game cards" and are inserted in from the top of the console. It's also possible to purchase games digitally.

Does the Switch comes bundled with any games?

Unlike the Wii and Wii U, the Switch won't come bundled with any games. According to Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime, the exclusion had to do with the console's price, the priority of including everything that consumers need to use the console, and giving them the freedom to decide what software they want to buy.

I'd rather have a powerful home console instead of some tablet a chick can show off to her hipster roof party friends for five minutes before they get tired of standing there holding their drinks, watching somebody else play a game and ask her to turn it off. And people already have plenty of ways to distract themselves while they travel, reading or binge watching TV shows. This would've been great if it launched years ago instead of the Wii U.

@iandizion713: Your Nintendo handheld can't make phone calls or do a fifth of the things your phone can, so you're not getting "the best of both."

Nintendo Switch is just a tablet handheld, the box is just a charging dock and TV out.

It is going to be horribly under powered so big name 3rd party games won't exist. Hard drive storage will once again be a big issue.

They have learned nothing at all. They just created an updated Wii U controller. Now they are going to take their handheld division down the drain along with their home consoles. This is the biggest abomination since the Virtual Boy.

Sadly I would rather them just be a 3rd party publisher and get out of hardware all together than watch them embarrass themselves constantly.

@Nintendo_Man: So?

If power was everything, everyone should sell their consoles and play exclusively on PCs instead. As for third parties, they got support. I just hope they have some kind of fail safe measure to keep third parties from doing it like contracts that make sure they have obligations.

Right now, I'd say the 360 is that because of the unstable hardware and ransomware for online multiplayer.

Right now, Nintendo is the only console maker that isn't charging for online multiplayer. Should they resort to it, I'd rather see all three consoles crash and burn at the same time with Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft going third party and releasing their games on Steam and GOG.

@Jinzo_111887: Lmao what the hell would they charge online multiplayer? It isn't even on par with launch PS3 PSN features, and that was free too.

They aren't charging for online multiplayer because they only supply barebones funcitionallity, preferred local co op over online, and never invested in features that costs them money like xbox live and psn did.

@soarlozer: Because Beavis and Butt-head do it.

Then Sony and Microsoft should be charging for the extra bells and whistles and offer a bare bones version for those who want free online multiplayer.

@soarlozer: Nintendo dont have many online games. No reason to pay crazy prices to play online. Also, only bout 30% pay for online with Sony. So seems even sony fans dont care for online. Ill take free online anyday. It works great on 3DS and Wii U.

@iandizion713: Indeed. Not everyone needs the extra bells and whistles. I'd rather have a bare bones experience that's free over paying for online multiplayer because the company offers features to gamers that I'm not interested in.

Will it have better friends features on par with other consoles (OS level party system, voice chat)? Will it have an achievement system? Will it have a background record feature like other modern consoles? Will accounts and digital purchases be tied to the console like on Wii U and 3DS? Will games look/run significantly worse when it's undocked? Are games saved to the cartridge like on 3DS? Will it have cloud saves? Does it have internal storage for digital games? If so, how large? Does it support SD cards? Will my virtual console purchases carry over? Will it have a wall charger so i can charge when not at home with the dock?

The article claims to be "everything i need to know" but doesn't answer any of those questions.

@Flyin3lvl: It's purely one screen at a time and i'm gonna guess it has no touch functionality.

I really doubt this will have any form of compatibility with 3DS, DS, Wii or Wii U.

I like how this article is shockingly short: "it connects to a docking station and has detachable controller thingies. There might be games, maybe?"

I don't know about you, but there'd be a lot more I'd "need to know" for an informed purchasing decision, but hey, Nintendo and marketing, right?

You forgot the bait-and-Switch feature. You know, by showcasing games that are not even confirmed to be released on the platform.

@cboye18: Like how Sony claimed Drive Club PS+ Edition would be a launch title for PS4, but the game was delayed, then the PS+ Edition was delayed after the game came out? Or how about how people were mislead about No Man's Sky and bad reviews of the game were censored?

I feel like Microsoft has probably done the same kind of thing, but I am not interested in searching for it right now.
