Nintendo Switch Getting Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate This Summer

Monster Hunter XX makes its way out of Japan in August.

70 Comments

Capcom is bringing the Nintendo Switch version of Monster Hunter XX to the West this summer. Retitled Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate, the online action RPG will launch exclusively for Switch in North America and Europe on August 28.

Generations Ultimate is an expanded version of the series' last mainline 3DS installment, Monster Hunter Generations. It features additional content, including two new Hunting Styles (Alchemy and Valor), an additional Elder Dragon, and a new endgame boss. Players will also be able to embark on "G Rank" quests, which Capcom says feature "even more formidable versions of familiar foes."

Now Playing: Nintendo Switch Gets Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate This Summer - GS News Update

Those who've purchased Monster Hunter Generations on 3DS will be able to transfer their save data to Generations Ultimate on Switch and continue playing with their same hunters. The game also allows players to use touch screen inputs for Hunter Arts--powerful attacks that can be unleashed after filling up your Arts Gauge--and supports four-player local and online multiplayer.

Up until now, Monster Hunter XX has only been available in Japan. The game first launched for 3DS last March and was ported to Switch in August. The Switch version proved to be a big success for Capcom, but at the time the publisher said it had "no plans" to bring the game to other regions.

Like previous Monster Hunter games, the Japanese version of XX received special cross-promotional gear following its launch. Most notably, Capcom released a set of armor based on Link's Champion's Tunic from The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Players could also craft a Korok costume for their Palico.

The most recent game in the series, Monster Hunter World, launched for PS4 and Xbox One back in January, with a PC release still to follow sometime this fall. Capcom acknowledged that fans had been asking for a Switch version of Monster Hunter World, but said that a port would be "difficult."

@gamingdevil800:

Really! Not excited about G-Rank and some actual content for the end game?

Don't get me wrong I loved World, as I do anything Monster Hunter, but the challenge was a joke and the content so low I barely sunk 100 hours into it before I was all done.

As a quality of life upgrade World was undoubtedly great, and it was a beauty to play; but I really missed the actual content side, and XX has probably the greatest content of any Monster Hunter to date.

@risingdawn: World is confirmed to get G-Rank at a later date as well as the monster leak list.

The X series are simply a spin-off with horrible added mechanics and over designed Monsters not made by the main team. The original X was designed as an anniversary game, rushed out and little else, XX is the added layer of that game.

MH:W however was developed by the same team that developed 4G and shows its quality of gameplay design.

@RSM-HQ: World is not confirmed to get G-rank at all although it will probably happen due to it's popularity. The leaked list however only has three more monsters were missing. Oroshi Kirin, Alatreon and Lunastra. One's a reskin with ice, One hasn't been seen since MHFU and it's a female blue Teo and the other is the only major one out of those three using the Daora model/skeleton.

@RSM-HQ: That list was proven fake the moment it came out. There's only one list that's real and it's been 100% right on everything. Narga etc wasn't even on the list. None of what you listed was on the list.

@nuke2099: World has become the best selling game in the franchise by far, the game that finally put the series into the spotlight. There aren't many things more likely than that this game will get an Ultimate version.

@RSM-HQ:

Would love an Ultimate version of World but as far as I'm aware there is no confirmed information on that. Care to share your source on that?

As for added mechanics that's your opinion, and not one I share, and so it doesn't change my personal excitement in the slightest. Not to mention one of the Hunter styles is the standard style and so classic gameplay is unaffected.

As for different teams; not something that bothers me in the slightest. Gen was simply an accumulation of previous games, the game engine was exactly the same, the Monsters were exactly the same, the movesets slightly improved, Game mechanics the same depending on Hunter style chosen as previously stated.

Was Gen little more than a greatest hits, yes it was. Did it change anything negatively, not in my experience, was there more content than a standard generation, absolutely.

Am I any less excited about this because someone has a different opinion than me, hell no.

"Care to share your source on that?"

It's from a dated Interview on 4gamer, before Worlds release. Check for yourself, I'm not running around finding old links. That's what GFAQs is for_

"As for added mechanics that's your opinion, and not one I share, and so it doesn't change my personal excitement in the slightest. Not to mention one of the Hunter styles is the standard style and so classic gameplay is unaffected."

That's why 4G or MH2G always win polls for the best MH game. Ever wonder why the X series gets so much hate ever?

"Am I any less excited about this because someone has a different opinion than me, hell no."

You can like whatever you want dood. But I've owned both X and XX and came out of both with my fellow Hunters disappointed. Been playing this series for a long time and only MH game I dislike more than the X games is Online, which is MMO trash. The two X games rely on flashy gimmicks over substance that 4G gave us to perfection. And while they still had some of the MH charm I could be spending that time playing a better MH experience. Like 4G_

World is bare boned I do agree, and lacking. And anyone assuming a Tempered Kirin is hard deserves to be slapped in the face with a double Apex Rajang hunt. . . However it'll get to that point, and the added content has been constant. With the very fun Siege which just ended. Gameplay is well improved as is some other note worthy changes. Still hate scoutflies but World is a game closing in to be the series best game.

X series is a concept best kept in the past; and forgotten.

"That's why 4G or MH2G always win polls for the best MH game. Ever wonder why the X series gets so much hate ever?"

I don't wonder that no, mainly due to the fact I don't care about what other people do or don't like, I play a game myself and decide if I like it from my personal experience of it.

And I loved Gen, more than 4G which I liked, less than 3G which I loved and more than FU which I liked. I also loved World, but I came away from the game considerably earlier than usual, slightly dissappointed at what I felt was a flash and refined easy game lacking the end game from titles such as 4G or XX and the difficulty I had come to expect from the series.

I've never disliked a single Monster Hunter game, I am a massive fan of the series as a whole. I certainly would never try to tell someone what they should or shouldn't like, simply express my personal feelings towards what I consider more of a great series with the Switch version.

You don't have to agree, I don't really care, and I enjoyed your Tempered Kirin refrence so enjoy yourself how you wish, as I will be with XX; finally in English.

@risingdawn:

The old game is only hard due to controls. Also any polls that show previous MH is the best is for western nostalgia and fanboys not yet playing mhw. Japanese gamer all voted MHW as the best monster hunter game yet. And yeah if you see sales, japanese users matter more.

@sakaixx:

Why do people keep telling me about polls! why would I care what anybody else thinks about a game?

Do you all need to consult a poll before you pick your breakfast? Here look I'll quote myself seeing as you obviously didn't read what I wrote:

"due to the fact I don't care about what other people do or don't like, I play a game myself and decide if I like it from my personal experience of it."

Controls are a moot point as the controls on Switch are the same as PS4 and XX is considerably more challenging than anything World had to offer, and I know this because A: I've played everything World has to offer. B: XX has G-Rank which is a higher difficulty than High Rank.

If people wanted to use an actual reason that the older games were harder, controls is not it. A more conclusive and thought out response would be that the mechanics made it harder. Longer healing animations, lack of cancels, less crutches like mantels.

Oh and about the 'Japanese users matter more' please do explain?

@risingdawn: Honestly I feel like the hand held versions were only so challenging due to the awful handheld controls. Even on PS3 when I played imported Monster Hunters they felt easier than the handheld versions. As for content it only makes sense there is more in XX cause they were reusing assets, models, animations and monsters for years. The game visually barely changed since PS2 so of course they would have more time to make new stuff while reusing old monsters lol.

@gamingdevil800: I've played MHFU and MHP3 both on an emulator with a PS4 pad and I can tell you the difference in difficulty between those games was huge. Not so much because of the controls, I've had the camera mapped to the right stick for both games, but because MHP3 made huge improvements to hit boxes and other stuff. In MHFU you'd get hit most of the time when visually you were out of range, that's what made the earlier games so hard. MHP3 greatly reduced all the clunkiness and made the game actually fair.

@gamingdevil800:

PSP and 3DS controls were undoubtedly terrible and a big impact on difficulty, Switch ofc shares controls with the dual analogue scheme; however, difficulty wise G-Rank is undoubtedly more challenging for more than just controls so can't wait for it.

As for content yeah the accumulation of work of 4 generations of games is the reason there is more content than World, but I'm not going to be exclusive to World simply from sympathy for it's youth. I shall most definitely be buying every version of Monster Hunter on any platform it comes on, and the future is bright for World. But that's time away yet, we won't be seeing a World 2 for years.

As for visuals from PS2, erm!! You could put a screenshot of the Switch version next to PS2 for a comparison but combined with the frame rate it is considerably better, not to mention the hideous UI that took 2/3rds of the screen!

Be honest there isn't much of a drastic difference in visuals. It looks better obviously but not by a long shot.

@og_gamerzzz: monster hunted never changed its engine or asset before world. Yeah its from ps2 era and it will look especially bad if u have been playing monster hunter world.

Also capcom cashgrab level they never updated the character creation editor. What you edited on ps2 is what you will edit in this game.

Definitely looks good for it's age that's for sure, although I'm pretty sure that's running through an emulator and at a higher resolution than in PS2 days, certainly didn't look like that on a crt lol.

But yeah still looking forward to Switch XX.

@lebanese_boy: It's late because they probably weren't thinking of releasing it in the west, until World became such a huge success. Last I heard XX sold very poorly in Japan.
