NPD: November game sales up 15 percent

Industry tracking group shows an expected rebound after October's sales figures were surprisingly flat; 197,000 PS3s, 476,000 Wiis sold in US.

After months of year-over-year growth, October's sales figures surprised some analysts and industry watchers. With the market-depressing effects of a console transition largely behind them, US retailers started off the key fourth quarter of the year with sales more or less in line with what they had taken in for October 2005.

Despite that month's unspectacular showing, analysts were upbeat this week in anticipation of significant sales growth for November. And according to the industry tracking NPD Group, their optimism was justified. For the month of November, US retail game sales amounted to roughly $804 million, a 15 percent increase over the prior year's $702 million.

Sales were led by the Xbox 360 release Gears of War (which broke the million-unit mark), followed by Square Enix's Final Fantasy XII and Nintendo's The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess for the Wii. Twilight Princess was the only game for either of the month's newly released systems--the Wii and the PlayStation 3--to crack the top-10 best-selling games (by units sold).

Despite the performance of Gears of War and the release of Sony's and Nintendo's next-gen consoles, it was portable systems that experienced the more pronounced growth. Portable game sales were up 28 percent to $185 million, compared with home console game sales' 11 percent bump to $618 million.

Sales for PS3 and Wii games would no doubt have been higher if more of the consoles had made their way into gamers' hands. NPD shows 197,000 PS3 systems sold for the month, while the Wii managed to move 476,000 units. The Xbox 360 bested them both, though not by much, sporting sales of 511,000 for the month.

None of the next-gen systems could measure up to the DS, however. Nintendo's newest portable sold 918,000 systems, according to NPD. All tallied up, US retailers sold $771 million worth of gaming hardware last month, 69 percent more than the $456 million moved in November 2005, when the Xbox 360 launched.

I just refuse to pay $60 for a video game, no matter how "killer" of an app it is. Haven't you ever heard of inflation?

KikoJones "Wow, the PS2 still crushing the non-portable competition, amazing! Oh and that's rubbish about Gears, Final Fantasy sold 1.5 million during the first DAY. Looks like since the pre-order sales were on Oct. 31 they technically were in October." This has already been said before but maybe you missed it, it's hard to say the PS2 crushed the consoles, when the Wii was only available in the last 10 days of the month. So Wii 10 sold 476,000 in 10 days (Would have sold more if there were more, and in all honesty the system was probably only available on the launch day, followed by probably one other restock day.) PS2, with 4 weeks of sales, 663,000.

qiwihead Why are people still buying the GBA when the DS plays all GBA games? I don't get it. Is it just because of how cheap the GBA is now? ------------------ That's exactly it. The GBA has a huge library of fun, inexpensive games. And with the popularity of the DS, you can get GBA's and SP's for less than ever now. It's a great value for the investment and anyone who wasn't on the GBA bandwagon before can hop on now for very little money.

Final fantasy has sold more, but some of the sales were from pre-orders in october, so they are not reflected in this chart. I think overall, Final Fantasy is a little bit ahead.

Even though FFXII sold more than gears, It is amazing that a new property (not a sequal) sold so well. I can't remember any new gamse that sold so fast. F.E.A.R. is the only recent one that wasn't a franchise. Maybe Dead Rising, but it was trumped "meimnobody---So the wii utterly crushed the xbox 360 if it would have had the same period of reporting. 70,000 units a day. Nintendo out of 3.9 million units of hardware bought in the US for the month of November sold more then 2.1 million units of it. " But of course you realize that after the first million, the sales would have slowed, right? Considering that the 360 has been out for a year, I find it amazing that it beat the Wii, but you can't reverse that because the Wii is the console that launched. I guarantee that the Wii would have beat the 360 if more hardware was available, but for a true comparison you need to compare the numbers of the Wii next November, once it is in full availability. I bet it won't meet the 500,000 mark in November of next year.

I figured November would be good for FFXII. It's important for people to remember that the game was only available for one day in October.

Looks like since the pre-order sales were on Oct. 31 they technically were in October. That PS2 is still a beast. Funny how Gamespot doesn't mention it, but again its a Cnet publication so it is for the lowest common denominator.

There's no dancing around it.. Gears of War will probably drop in the Summer.... So till then I guess you can play PGR3...Have fun

I helped those November numbers by purchasing a Wii. I already own a 360, but probably will not get Gears of War until it's less than $30. I just refuse to pay $60 for a video game, no matter how "killer" of an app it is.

Current sales numbers on PS3 and Wii don't mean as much as they will after the launch window since the current sales (especially PS3 because of the price) could just be the fanatics... I'm especially curious to see if the Wii numbers will remain as strong as they look. If so the race might be between 360 and Wii instead of 360 and PS3 like everyone thought...

Digital-Hero, you know nothing, the Wii came out in Australia a day before Europe, we also get European made games before the US. $170 million video game industry in the country shows that it is the fastest growing market in the world.

Good news! I hope the video game market continues to kick ass! Keep that number up! I know that video game market analyists are starting to think cheap crappy mobile games are the way to go...because they are cheap to make and sell well...but they are not the epic games that gears of war are!! Go game industry!

Over 642,000 of the GBA line were sold in that NPD reporting period. Btw the wii was only seven days of the reporting period but sold nearly half a million. So the wii utterly crushed the xbox 360 if it would have had the same period of reporting. 70,000 units a day. Nintendo out of 3.9 million units of hardware bought in the US for the month of November sold more then 2.1 million units of it.

"Even though the DS sold more units than any other console, it didn't earn the most money. That would make the 360 the biggest seller." You have to include profit margin. Just because the 360 costs more doesn't mean Microsoft actually profited more. If the DS cost $100 to manufacture and the 360 also cost $100 (which it definitely doesn't) then you'd be right.

I even bought a DS this month for my wife along with three games. A killer electric blue one. Now we have a PSP, PS2, PS3, Xbox, 360, and a Wii. Yes, two gaming PCs, one desktop and laptop. Oh yah, and a SNES and a dreamcast. Single handedly my family keeps the entire gaming business afloat.

thebrazenone: Not only that but the PSP wasn't too far behind the XBox360. Some analysts had predicted the 360 would sell close to a million in November with Wedbush Morgan saying they expected the 360 to move close to 750k with Gears being a killer app and there being shortages of the Wii and PS3. So we had 200k in Oct and now 500k in Nov making a whopping 700k in the first 2 months on the holiday crunch. That is just not getting it done. Enjoy.

okay, let's try to format this post one last time. if it doesn't work, who cares . . . BYS2 hmm.... this article actually missed some things "Interestingly, the PS2 managed to outsell the Xbox 360 yet again. In fact, so did the old Game Boy. The PS2 and Game Boy sold a respective 664K and 641K units" just go do news search on google... << LINK REMOVED >>. so that makes it only 1 month out of 13 that the 360 has outsold the ps2. i don't even know what to say about that.
