Nvidia RTX 3090, 3080, 3070 GPU: All Specs, Prices, And Release Dates Detailed

During a livestream, Nvidia officially detailed its next-gen GPU under the Ampere architecture.

Nvidia revealed its new RTX 3000 line of Ampere-powered GPU earlier this month, featuring the RTX 3090, 3080, and 3070 cards. The new 3000 series is the second generation of RTX graphics cards that will run features like real-time ray tracing with much higher performance than current RTX cards. Here's what we know about each card so far, including specs, price, release date, and more.

For first-hand impressions, don't pass up the chance to read our review of the RTX 3080, which called it a "powerful video card with big generational jumps."

Now Playing: Which Nvidia 30 Series Card Is Right For You? (RTX 3090, 3080, and 3070)

Nvidia RTX 3000 Series Price And Release Dates

The RTX 3080 is set to launch on September 17 for $700 USD, and the RTX 3070 was also revealed with a release window in October and a price of $500. The massive high-end card, the RTX 3090, is said to be capable of 8K resolution at 60 FPS performance--the RTX 3090 will launch on September 24 and pricing starts at a whopping $1500. RTX 3000 series pre-orders are not yet available, but Nvidia's website does have a "notify me" button if you're eager to place an order. Traditionally, a new line of GPUs sells out quickly when they first go up for pre-order, and that could easily be the case here due to Nvidia's surprisingly aggressive pricing.

Nvidia RTX 3000 Series Specs: 3090, 3080, and 3070

For the full technical specs, you can check out our table below for the important details on the Founders Editions of the new Ampere cards. That includes power supply requirements: The 3070 calls for a 650W PSU, while both the 3080 and 3090 need a 750W PSU. You can also get a look at the dimensions of each, with the 3090 measuring in at more than 12 inches long and requiring three slots. All three cards support HDMI 2.1.

Compared to the Turing-based RTX 2080, the Ampere-based RTX 3080 will be built with 30 shader-TFLOPS (2.7x), 58 RT-TFLOPS (1.7x), and 283 Tensor-TFLOPS (2.7x). Plenty of other details were given in Nvidia's reveal video, which you can watch a clip of below.

We also got a sneak peek at what performance of an Ampere-based RTX card will perform compared to current-gen cards, and the gains are shown to be significant. Nvidia claims that the RTX 3080 generally performs twice as fast as the RTX 2080--the folks at Digital Foundry did a hands-on preview testing relative performance and came away with around 70% to 90% performance increases depending on the game and situation. The more budget-friendly RTX 3070 is even said slightly outperform the RTX 2080 Ti and at about half the price, too. The beastly RTX 3090 is said to be 50% faster than the enthusiast-tier Titan RTX card. The graph below compares Turing and Ampere performance across a number of games, including Control.

These new RTX 30-series cards are built with a new cooling system, featuring fans on both sides of the board that are pushing and pulling air in both directions independently to better manage temperature. Nvidia claims that these card will run cooler and quieter than RTX 20-series counterparts. As for the Founders Edition board design, here's a look at the new RTX 3080 video card itself:

No Caption Provided

The Ampere architecture comes off the heels of the Turing-based RTX 20 series which first introduced real-time ray tracing and AI capabilities in graphics hardware. Those video cards feature multiple processing cores (RT Core and Tensor Core) to manage the heavy workload and make things like high-performance ray tracing in games and DLSS (AI-based supersampling).

Also during the Nvidia stream, we learned that Fortnite will add ray tracing and DLSS support on PC. The company also showcased Cyberpunk 2077's ray tracing effects and shared a Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War trailer to show off ray tracing. Black Ops Cold War will be a cross-generational and cross-play release, with players able to enjoy the game together regardless of platform. It's out November 13.

Does this mean the price for the 2080 will drop from around the current whooping US$ 1000 - 1100 range?

Sorry, I'm confused...

@rotchild: Why would you spend money on old tech? When you can get new tech, like the 3070 for $500 that runs similar to a 2080 ti with the new RT and other new tech included.

@Bamda: Depends on how much money one has to spend... Just saw a brand new "benchmark" (between quotes, 'cause it was Doom Eternal, not a very demanding game on any GPU) video posted today of the 2080 Ti going between 75-90 FPS vs. the 3080 going between 120-130 FPS (both cards on 4K)

DOOM Eternal | Official GeForce RTX 3080 4K Gameplay - World Premiere

2080 Ti = US$ 1100

3080 = US$ 700

Since the 2080 Ti was under-performed, in their own channel... Guess if they cut the price of the 2080 Ti to let's say... between 300 and 400 TOPS (day dreaming), I'm sold on the Ti ;)

@rotchild: No way would I ever spend money on older tech when I can get new tech and at a lower price. Not happening.

@Bamda: Oh, me neither. That's why I said the price for the 2080's (and also 2060's and 2070's) need to go WAY down for me (or anyone else that doesn't have 'em) to consider buying it. I mean, currently I don't even have 700 dollars to spend on a 3080, let alone 1100 to spend on the 2080 Ti. That's why they should drop the price on 'em, but as discussed below, they most probably will not :(

@rotchild: Save for the 3070, the $500 2080 Ti replacement with better RTX engine.

@rotchild: hell if anything they will go up in price.

Computer parts are weird like that. they release new and cost a lot. after awhile they go an sale, when the newer stuff is about to release. then once its cleared out, and hard to find the price goes way up. had some ram I was trying to match for an old comp. made me laugh when I saw it was like double the price when it was new.

As an old gamer...I am starting to miss the days when $1400 could get you an entire gaming rig...and the big budget item was the 21" CRT monitor.

Everyone is talking about 4K, 8K whatever K, am I the only one who wants a 150$ card that can play 1080P on high/ultra at high and stable FPS?

@gargar: Sadly, most cards at $150 still look like crap at 1080p, unless you chance it and buy used.

@gargar: Most Steam users game at 1080p so no you're far from the only one. These cards are for those who want bleeding edge performance, visuals and resolutions.

That will be for the 60 cards. Wait till they talk about the 3060 or even 3050 cards.

How is my PS5 supposed to compete? I might just buy a 3070, put it on the top of my PS5 and hope it increase my frames. Someone suggested me to tape it to the PS5, but i don't know if he was trolling me or not.

these prices are actually really fair!. i thought for sure their premium tier model was going into the $2000s while their base tier would be $700-800 minimum which i prepared for. i feel like im gonna save a bit now since i was expecting more.

@caj1986: But for the price of a RTX 3070 (the cheapest one) 500$ is around what is speculated for the new consoles.

RTX 3070 = New console (price wise)

Consoles arent going anywhere just yet. Maybe in 18 months or so.

@caj1986: Why is that RIP consoles? Someone who wants to just buy a box to put under the TV for £400 to play games on probably isn't in the market for a starting from £450 GPU that will then need a PC to go in. Big GPU upgrades in the past haven't effected console sales and they won't start now.

@kalade: You're right, plus consoles still haven't announced prices yet. Consoles still have an ace in the hole right now. But still, it's hard to say "no" to PC gaming right now if you've already got a decently capable CPU.

That fan setup is kind of neat, first time I've seen a push-pull configuration, at least from the factory.

@mrbojangles25: its not really push pull though as the fan airflow does not go through both fans one after another but through each fan seperately

You sure? I might be incorrect but it looks like the top/back fan pulls air in while the bottom/front fan acts as an exhaust.

At least according to the arrows in the video.

@mrbojangles25: yes its an exaust but they are in no way connected to each other as the heat fins in the middle of the card are agled so that the airflow is pushed to the side and not the other fan. search "rtx 3080 airflow" on google and the first picture should show you what i mean
