Outriders Is Coming To Xbox Game Pass On Day One For Console And Streaming

Microsoft officially confirms that Outriders is headed to Game Pass at launch.

The official Xbox Game Pass Twitter account is hinting at a new game that's supposed to hit the service soon, and it seems to be People Can Fly's third-person shooter Outriders. [Update: Microsoft has now officially announced that Outriders will be released on Game Pass at launch on April 1. It will be available to subscribers on console and via streaming (Android) but not PC]

According to an email from the imaginary executive senior vice president lieutenant of general video game communications "Melissa McGamepass," "that new game has been confirmed and is officially coming to the service." While it doesn't explicitly state the game's name, the references to "mysterious signal" and "anomaly" has people talking about Outriders.

In an Outriders story and world reveal from February 2020, a "mysterious signal" is what drives the superpowered militia group to face off against the "anomaly." At the end of the Outriders demo, players end up chasing a mysterious signal in the distance. These two callbacks are seemingly enough for people to assume that Outriders will make its way to Xbox Game Pass.

Some people, however, are suggesting Batman Arkham Knight. Recent leaks showed that an Xbox Series X|S enhanced port of the game is in the works, but this remains unconfirmed.

This wouldn't be the first time Xbox Game Pass teased a game coming to the service only for it to end up there later. The same sort of events played out with Control; "Melissa McGamepass" teased the announcement on November 30, 2020, then it dropped on the service on December 3. The service is brimming with all kinds of games and gets new ones frequently, so be sure to check out our roundup of all of the available titles on Xbox Game Pass right now.

Outriders launches on April 1 for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S. Hit up our Outriders preorder guide to learn about what comes with buying early.

All the money Microsoft wastes giving players gamepass and yet they still can not sell their consoles. You know they are paying way more for rights to these games they put on gamepass then they are pulling in on subs. They are trying to outspend the competition since they can not beat them any other way. And selling at a loss to try to cut out the competition is a clear violation of antitrust laws if intent can be proved.

@gaeandilth: Whooooole lotta assumptions there, bub.

If you had made a new GaaS, with line of sight to per-user transactions (but not much positive hype a month before release), wouldn't you want to show investors you had access to millions of players day 1?

The most fundamentally incorrect part of the asaumption is that there was ANY up-front money, compared to numbers based on ACTUAL player installs.

@Pyrosa: my assumption is that square is not stupid. Would not take much of game at this point in time to get huge sales. If they did not get a considerable amount up front or a good amount(40 bucks) per download on game pass they are losing out. Guarantee you even if Outriders ends up being a fluster cluck like anthem or fo76 its going to be a huge seller just because of its timing.

@gaeandilth: Microsoft beats the competition in just about every aspect outside of "exclusives". Even that is matter of opinion how large of advantage Sony or even Nintendo has from 1st party publishing.

Nintendo has their niche, and the next few years will bring a wave of XBox titles. Hardware and services, Microsoft wins, handily.

There are only a few PS4/5 titles I even care about. Honestly, it is only Demon's Souls Remake and Bloodborne that I would miss.

@theduckofdeath: they do huh? When did Microsoft ever try innovate their console? They been copying playstation since their inception. Yeah MIcrosoft is a huge company but xbox has never been anything but a cheap knock off and Microsoft has never even tried to do their own thing.

And game pass is not a gaming innovation it is a business model and it is about as sneaky and anti-gamer as the f2p model is. Nintendo might not of went the direction i wanted but at least they innovated. And although Sony's innovations been crap at least they are trying. But do not worry if Sony does succeed with one of their innovations Microsoft will steal the idea.

@theduckofdeath: fanboy of gaming in general the game pass will do to the gaming industry what f2p did which i also predicted. If xbox had the 1000+ VR games and a few decent exclusives i would have had no problem going xbox since i know the ps5s innovations are gimpy and will be used just as much as the touch pad by game devs.

If Xbox keeps putting AAA day 1 games on game pass Sony will be forced to do the same. If that happens ALL GAMERS will lose.

If you do not agree youre free to say so but calling me names and demanding my silence just proves you have no point.

@gaeandilth: You come off like someone with particular...motivations. Could be I misjudged or prejudged you. However, you are not giving anyone here a lot to work with. Go back and read the tone and context of your post at some point.

If you're not a Sony fanboy, then you seem to be playing the part of Chicken Little. There is definitely a Negative Nancy vibe I'm getting. You're whipping yourself into a frenzy over hypotheticals.

At the end of the day, it doesn't matter too much if you pick up a PS5 or Series X (not for a couple years at least), a RTX 3080 or a 6800XT. Good luck finding any of those. If you chose "wrong"...just buy the other one down the line. Or not.

@6t4gp: shortages on both systems was an old hype ploy thats done all the time. But they messed up and it is a real shortage now because of the shortage on microchips. Every ps4 player i know that switched to xbox only did it because they could not find a ps5

@gaeandilth: Game Pass at current subscriber levels makes between 2.5 and 3.4 billion a year. GTA V made somewhere in the neighborhood of 7 billion in 8 years. The subscription is every year , year after year after year. Thats why you see them invest in the subscription. They are pouring a lot of money into game pass because a recurring , predictable revenue stream is more valuable than hoping your next game is as successful as GTA V.

@keiser69: gta 5 sold 20 million copies at 60 bucks each on playstation that is 1.2 billion for a single game how many games does game pass have? Game like outriders has to be predicting at least 200 million in sales on xbox to sell for game pass for anything less would of been dumb.

@gaeandilth: I dont understand whatever argument you are trying to make. Game Pass has hundreds of games. It also has about 20 million subscribers by now which is your sales number for GTA V. Most games dont sell 20 million on 1 platform. No Sony first party game has ever been able to sell 20 million even with 114 million or more consoles in the market. So unless you can make a GTAV success every year for the rest of time its better to have game pass than a single GTAV. If Outriders is going to game pass then they are probably predicting zero sales on Xbox. They either got paid upfront or they have a usage deal with MS to get paid more the more people play.

@keiser69: yeah up till now game pass was games that were past their prime or just plain bad.

The real issue is with the game pass model and the effect it would have on game development if it becomes the norm on consoles. Also gives shady companies like Microsoft way to much power over the gamers and the developers. And since it is Bill Gates I am absolutely positive he is doing something illegal with all the data collected from subscriptions too.

@gaeandilth: You are either wearing a tinfoil hat or you're a fanboy. Game Pass has tons of good games. MS and Playstation are collecting information about everything you do on their consoles. You agree to that when you connect to their service. Game Pass is an option and these games can still be bought at any store or digital store. So it doesnt lead to any more or less power for MS unless people really like it and subs go thru the roof. Which is possible but even then if they did something you didnt like you could just unsubscribe and buy the games retail.

@keiser69: good games that were past their prime like I said. Not a day 1 release. Yeah it is an option atm but it is clear with some of the moves they been making recently they trying to corner the market. And if it becomes big enough it wont be optional.

@gaeandilth: Can't sell their consoles? Both the Series X and PS5 are still selling out about as fast as they being made. And Microsoft is selling Game Pass on more than just their current generation hardware.

@gaeandilth: You know that all consoles are sold at a loss right? Also, tons of other streaming platforms took a loss before gaining a higher user base. You argument has no basis in fact.

@Archaicc: consoles sold at a loss but not with the express intent to stifle competition. They sold at a loss but they end up profiting because of their cut of the thousands of games that get developed for their platform.

@gaeandilth: How is trying to drive subscriber growth stifling competition? The game is still going to PS, you just have to pay for it full price.

You clearly have no understanding of business....this is a very common strategy and has been used for other streaming platforms.

@kstaggs87: Its a nice mix of Destiny and Division 2 but People Can Fly just doesnt have the budget of Bungie or Ubisoft. I'm hoping this Game Pass deal gives it enough legs so the small developer can update and improve. Its not as bad as Sea of Thieves was at launch and that game is doing pretty well now. Heres hoping.

@Barighm: Bungie has over 600 employees and Ubisoft of course has way way more than that, my point is People Can Fly does not have the budget or resources of a Bungie (Destiny) or Ubisoft (Division 2) the two games it will probably be compared with most.

@legacyrxt: Hope so. I didn't see any reason Outriders HAS to run at 30 or less on the Series X; it's not the most amazing looking game or anything. I enjoyed it significantly more on my PC, so if it's not smooth on the Xbox I may still buy the game on PC, even though I've got Game Pass. Guess that wouldn't put me out anything I wasn't expecting to be before I heard this news.

The game is so clunky that if its not on the "straight-to-dvd" service, in a week, there will be under 500 players on the servers, and the dev knows this.

@keiser69:

Except Outriders isn't a live service game... The devs have stated this numerous times. Outriders is a full-package game. All content is included from day one and it has a start and an end. Think of loot games like Diablo 2 or Borderlands - that is the formula Outriders is using, except unlike those games, Outriders also has a fully fleshed out endgame component as well.

They are not drip-feeding us content like other games of this type do or waiting to see how many big the playerbase is before moving forward with expanding the game. You get it all from day one.

@thecupidstunts:
what are you implying? That they are lying and they fully intend to make it a live service game?

They have been stressing the fact that the game is not live service well before launch, even well before they were supposed to launch in February. In fact, since live service has sort of become synonymous with games like this, they been saying it throughout the course of development to try and alleviate any confusion and let players know that "we are not that type of game."

@H0RSE: If a developer made a multiplayer mode on which they will focus on,going to a sub and have a huge playerbase right from the gates,is a good thing.

I also think SE likes money and its a new IP so financiallywise makes also sense.

@millionsedge: That's the way it came across to me too. They're trying... either their marketing team or people that are already sold on it, but it doesn't feel like it's making any waves, at all. It would be plenty interesting if it landed on Game Pass for its first three days so people could try it, possibly get hooked on it, and then it leaves Game Pass quick enough to make people want to buy it to continue playing.

Cinemassacre got to play an early build of it a year ago and my first reaction was "oh hey look, I think I've seen this at least a dozen times by now." It was a bit like my reaction to Godfall when I first saw that.
