@wookiegr @xolivierx @El_Zaggy The real problem was that the 2600 was tapped out by the ET release. It was 1977 tech and was outdated by 82. Graphics quickly improved during that period. People say that the 2600 version of Pacman is trash. The Arcade specs. were like 25 times more powerful than the 2600. What the developers did was max out the 2600 and still there was not nearly enough power. There were great 2600 games, but it could not keep up in the long run. The NES and SNES were able to accept added custom chips to enhance games as those systems aged. The 2600 could not. Once arcade games became 20-30 times more powerful, the 2600 was beyond tapped out. The 5200 was a horribly constructed system that was just more of the same, with better graphics. It was not a gameplay upgrade. Also, even though the 5200 had better graphics, it was still far from arcade quality. The NES offered not just better graphics but also gameplay. Zelda and SMB were not trying to compete with arcade. It went beyond it in terms of gameplay. Atari became a weak arcade port mill that ran out of ideas. There were many bad games on the Atari 2600 by 82-83. It is one of the most important systems but also nearly destroyed it.

Most of the 360s that MS sold to retailers quickly ended up in people's homes. Many retailers were caught off guard by the success of the 360. Retailers ordered a ton of Ones because they expected it to sell well based on the strong track record of the 360. Now, there is a huge backlog as the One has not sold well to consumers. Unless consumers purchase, retailers will not order more. How many units of the 32X did Sega ship to retailers--how many ended up in people's homes?

There is a huge difference between shipped and actually being played.

Just because there are three-four million Ones sitting in retailer warehouses does not mean that they are being played. Consoles sitting in warehouses do not encourage people to purchase games. Many retailers will struggle to get rid of their oversupply. One of the reasons MS got rid of Kinect was to encourage retailers to order more units/the newer models, because they would not have done so anytime soon, otherwise. That would have led to more poor press statements.

There were millions of Atari games once sitting in retailer warehouses.Those retailers stopped ordering games from Atari, so Atari dumped them. MS wont dump their systems in the trash, just mark it down even more. This will represent the biggest price drop for a major system in history, over such a short span of time. It is a form of dumping--price dumping. At 399, Kinect-less one will be a failure as the 4 is also 399. Everyone knows there will be another price drop, so interested buyers will likely wait.

Believe me, MS is concerned about the reality of the numbers as they see the full, ugly, picture. It is very problematic.
