Pac-Man chomping iPods

[UPDATE] Venerable Namco game to be part of new $5-per-title game catalog available on iTunes, along with Bejeweled, Tetris, Zuma, and more.

For the better part of a year, rumors have run amok that Apple was getting into games. In May, GameSpot was told by a tech-sector recruiter that former LucasArts developer Mike Lampell was heading up a group inside Apple's storied iTunes division, which was recruiting "C/C++ coders with a 'gaming background.'"

Today at a "special event" held by Apple in San Francisco's Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, Apple finally made it official. As of today, games will be available for download on the company's popular iTunes service. Unlike iTunes video downloads, iTunes games are not playable on a PC or Mac, only the iPod itself. The cost per game will be $4.99, the same price as many Xbox Live Arcade games.

Ironically, many of the iPod games Apple is offering are already available on Xbox Live Marketplace. Foremost among them are Namco Bandai's arcade classic Pac-Man and the puzzlers Bejeweled and Zuma, both from PopCap Games. Other available titles are Cubis 2 from FreshGames and three Electronic Arts offerings--Mahjong, Mini Golf, and the mother of all puzzle games, Tetris. Two other games, Vortex and Texas Hold 'Em are also available, but their publishers were unclear.

[UPDATE] According to Apple, "Each game plays perfectly on your iPod using the intuitive click wheel as a controller." However, the controls proved problematic to GameSpot editors who downloaded Pac-Man. The game forces players to look in two directions at once at the same time by maneuvering the titular yellow hero by using the scroll wheel to change direction on a recreation of a joystick in the lower right-hand side of the screen. The control scheme for Tetris, however, which involved pushing either the fast-forward or rewind-track buttons on the click wheel to rotate and the pause/play button to "hard drop," was more intuitive.

Unfortunately for owners of older models, all Apple games are playable only on fifth-generation video iPods, which were released last year in 30GB and 60GB versions, and the new models announced today, which will be on store shelves in 30GB and 80GB flavors in October. The new iPods will retail for $249 and $349, respectively, will be 30 percent thinner than their predecessors, and will sport screens that are 60 percent brighter and have higher resolution. Apple also announced an 8GB Nano model and a new $79 1GB iPod shuffle, though neither will be able to play games.

I just bought a 30 GB one two months ago... I knew something like this would happen. I'll wait to buy another one when they fix the video/allow the battery to last longer while playing videos. It seems like I watch one short video and the battery drains quickly.

Since there were rumors of Apple and Sony coming together awhile back to collaborate on something is becoming more relevant now. XBLA games through Itunes? Interesting.

;; I hate you apple. I just bought my 60GB video iPod last year, and now you release an 80GB model for $50 cheaper than what I paid for the 60??? AND it has a brighter screen, even slimmer design, and gapless audio playback? I hate you apple...

ipod is good for music, but lets keep it simple... that is why all those people are buying their ipods because you can play lots of music on it and not to much drama with connecting stuff on it and everything else, just music. damn keep the games tho nintendo DS (psp... kind of lol) but i don't think they take this to seriously (apple) they are more hopping on to the hype... i guess, gaming makes lots of money today

I have to say that I hate those mac commercials with the hipster Mac guy and the nerdy PC guy. Give me f'n break! People who realy know computers are overweight, smell bad, and spend 90% of thier lives indoors. I'm not nocking them at all. I am one too an extent.. They don't frolick on the beach in thongs with ass tatoos before they come home to use thier awesome macs.

I don't think of this as a new gaming machine, I think of this as going the cell phone route. Music, videos and games are all available on your phone, and it's been rumored for a long time that we will see an iphone.

Huh, thinner? I like Apple and all but how thin can you make those things until they break when you pick them up?

I'll just wait for the touch screen ipod coming out later this year. Who wants to play on a click wheel anyways.

Damn. I just bought my 30GB ipod video a couple weeks ago for 299. If I would have waited a few weeks I could have got a newer model that's thinner, brighter and 50 bucks less. Despair!

I will pass on Ipods bottom line, they are way too expensive for me to bother with 400$ for 60gb worth of music and 350$ for 80gb of music/games yeah Ill pass.

Who in there right mind would play pac man on an ipod? The controls would be terrible. Most of the games would be terrible on an ipod. The click wheel was not made for gaming.

Although I own some of these games off of the XBLA, this is a great idea. I wonder if Apple is thinking about putting Tempest 2000 on the iPod. It would work great with the scroll wheel.

Another smart move by Apple. For all their faults in the world of computing, they've done everything right on the iPod. After all, given the number of people who will play a game on a cell phone during a bus ride or while waiting for class to start, it just makes sense to have them on an iPod, which has a better screen, more storage, and a better processor than most phones. It's just another selling point of the iPod platform.

IPODS are trendy, but I don't see them as becoming a viable game platform... at least in their current iteration.
