Pirating Group to Stop Cracking Some Games to Evaluate Impact on Sales

Just Cause 3 has still not been cracked, according to new report.

China-based cracking group 3DM, the team that recently said anti-piracy measures on PC games will be so advanced by 2018 that it may bring about an end to pirated games, has made another big announcement.

No Caption Provided

TorrentFreak reports that 3DM leader "Bird Sister" wrote on her blog that the group will stop cracking single-player games apparently in an effort to measure the impact it has on sales.

"We just had an internal meeting. Starting at the Chinese New Year [February 8], 3DM will not crack any single-player games," she said. "We'll take a look at the situation in a year's time to see if genuine sales have grown."

This announcement comes a month after Bird Sister said her team was unable to crack Avalanche's open-world game Just Cause 3, which uses a secondary encryption system called Denuovo. According to TorrentFreak, the game has still not been cracked.

Bird Sister does not mention Denuovo by name in her blog post, however. Head to TorrentFreak to read their full report.

BioWare's 2014 RPG Dragon Age Inquisition also used Denuvo, which adds to whatever other form of DRM a developer/publisher may put on a game. For that game, Denuvo was reportedly able to keep pirates at bay for an entire month, which was deemed a long time.

DRM is a controversial and debated topic in gaming. Assassin's Creed publisher Ubisoft has admitted that DRM cannot stop piracy, while The Witcher developer CD Projekt Red doesn't put any DRM on its PC games because it thinks DRM is the "worst thing in the gaming industry."

Interesting experiment. How well it goes and how accurate the data is will be down to how many other groups are/can crack the games they do (as well as them actually being able to crack the more popular releases using more advanced DRM going forward).

Personally, I expect they'll be somewhat happy to discover they're not having as much of a negative impact as many suspect.

As long as games and hardware stay expensive in 3rd world countries piracy will continue. For example a PS4 is worth 800 dollars and recently released AAA games around 120 dollars everything is priced double of it's original value in the US, and to add to the aggravation the minimum wage in 3rd world countries is half of what it is in America.

I doubt any American will be willing to pay 800 dollars for a console heck the PS3 almost failed because it was worth 600 dollars back in the day...

I wonder why 3DM think that if they stop cracking the world will be a better place ??
Do they realy think that the world will stop spinning because of them ?
they should be the first to know the first rule of hacking , the day one hacker is gone another 10 hackers breed..

sorry 3DM , but you wont be missed , i can only understand 2 things here , either they feel unable to crack some games so they wanna make it sound better for them or they are paid to stop ,,, thats it no magic boys

I don't believe piracy will ever go away, but...i don't pirate games, so, i don't really care.

The problem is...if piracy ends, used games will soon follow....and the prices will skyrocket, since greed is the name of the game (no pun intended).

@Evil_Sidekick: I don't believe piracy will ever go away either. I don't pirate games either because game developers are some of the most intelligent, underpaid, overworked developers, and stealing from them is really like biting the hand that feeds, though it's expensive food.

The reason I don't think prices will skyrocket is because new companies are coming out constantly and the competition will keep the prices at bay. Let's presume, for instance, that there's only one publisher... then it would be cause of concern (or not really) because of the anti-trust laws.

The truth is that people can charge whatever they want for their property, and if someone doesn't like the price, then don't steal it. Plain as that.

Oh and there's a bunch of misspellings in this article. It's Denuvo, not Denuovo (article writer, please correct this).

3DM isnt the only group around, so I dont see how this "test" would provide any concrete measure of sales variation.

That said however, I firmly believe other groups stopping too wouldn't increase sales at all, and there is a serious chance it will lower sales considerably. The insane amount of games available today gives people a ton of alternatives in case they can't or won't buy the next AAA monster, then some people won't play at all cause they just don't care much, and without the option to fully test the game by yourself before buying, the bet's risk will be much higher when deciding to buy or not.

As I see it game publishers and devs have 2 ways to go, you either make the best games you can, confidently, and truly trust that their quality will show and demonstrate even pirates that they are worth buying and supporting (CDProjekt), or you stay like this, sacrificing consumer friendly policies, popularity and massive exposure, hoping pirates will somehow still "need" your game so so much they will suddenly start giving money away.

Time will tell.

@cfscorpio: It's all down to the individual. Personally I'm fed up with having to log into this service or that thing in order to access my games. For others the fact that DRM's have previously been excessively restrictive in how you use the software (Ubisoft's old three install limit method was particularly aggressive). Others feel that some DRM methods are the root cause of instability in many titles (I believe Denuvo has been on the end of this accusation in regards to every game it's been implemented in, though I couldn't speak to the validity of such reports)

I really doubt sales will go up if games get pirate proof.

In fact they could go down in sales, because many people buy games after downloading them so they can play them online also. It'll probably cost steam a lot more money also, because people will be downloading games, then refunding them when they realize they suck... using up their bandwidth and extra time dealing with refunds. Although i wouldn't count in steam for refunds... i had a game just a day over their so called 14 day refund policy and they wouldn't even refund it... only 20 bucks it would have cost them, and they want to make an enemy of me? ok steam, ok.

@dimpoblimpo: whats the shocker? i've returned lots of things at other stores before and they never hassled me even though i was a few days over their limit. i had an xbox console 2 months over its warranty and walmart still took it back.

Steam blows and i hope you get screwed over by them soon. They have the worst customer service i've seen. I didn't even get a proper response back, just a pre-written message because thats how unimportant their customers are to them.

@Yams1980: some business will break their own rules while some hold true to their business models. You can't be dissatisfied with a company for following its own rules and preocudures and expect big companies to fix your mistakes.

Rules are rules and while some will break those rules most professional companies will not.

FYI Walmart treats their employees like complete trash. Chances are they can't be bothered trying to tell you your wrong so they just run the return and avoid confrontations they aren't paid enough to face

@Yams1980: Bull. The reason they pirate is because...

1. Don't give a s**t.

2.They are poor.

3.They think it's "cool" to steal.

4. A combination of all of the above.

@fig56: .....oh yeah, and the fact that some devs just basically screw you into buying bullshit DLC, preorder prerequisites and everything else! I'm sure a lot of people were happy they pirated the PC release of Arkham Knight before they ended up buying it on PS4. Oh and when the head of Gearbox praised the Aliens Colonial Marines game and then just basically fucked the people who bought it in the ass.......but yeah, you're right that's why they pirate.

@Yams1980: Yeah. I haven't the faintest what you do personally but I really doubt most people that say they are just trying the game out really pay for the game. They play for 20+ hours and decide that "they don't like it." Or they finish the game and decide they will pay for it... but not right now because it's really not worth full price. Then they forget all about it or maybe they buy it years later for a tenth the price.

And that's just the folks living in countries that actually enforce copyright laws. Pirating video games and movies is an industry in many nations.

Also, a day over 14 days it what we call LATE. As in "not on time." Get mad at yourself, not Steam.

@Zloth2: you can't play it for 20 hrs and get a refund. Its 14 days, or 2 hrs steam claims. So nobody is playing a game 20 hrs and asking for a refund after.

In my case, i had gotten the game on sale for 25 dollars and it was a 40gb download so i couldn't download it for over 2 weeks until my bandwidth cap reset, then i downloaded it. But i hated the game but couldn't refund it because it was a few days past the 14 day limit, thats unfair to me. I think the 2 hr limit is one thing, but 14 days is not enough time, and i bet most people buy these things and don't even try them out until months later.

Take note that they all work for the Chinese Government as well translating/preparing games for China. SO I am sure there is some pressure coming from them as well. Could also be that they may want to prove to the Chinese Government that piracy isn't effecting their wallet. China is #1 in game sales revenue, so the pressure could be huge from their government, and remember they are communist. I'm surprised no one else has touched on this subject yet. Denuvo is also a pain in the ass for sure, but I don't think it's just that and they are giving up because it's hard although I am sure it is also a factor in their decision but I believe it is a small one because cracking is their passion and the challenge it presents bubbles in their mind. Don't be so fast to see the game sales as a smoke screen for them, or that Denuvo is becoming uncrackable per say. There could be some truth in that following into their own government causing pressure within the group, they just are not free to say such things as we would be.

@l2humpie: Many western games are banned in China. And the Chinese market are 99% dominated by Chinese companies. Do you even know what socialist communism is? Communism means the government owns everything. Private ownership are not allowed. If you start a company in China then you have joint ownership. That means you own 50% and the state owns 50%.

Do you know why Facebook and Microsoft don't have access to the Chinese market? Because then American companies would be 50% owned by the Chinese. That is how communism works. In Communism the government owns everything. Socialism is a way to full communism.

In Europe nations as Norway, Finland, Denmark, Sweden, France are 60% communist socialist. Yes democracy but socialist ideology is communism. Greece is 100% socialism communism and just collapsed. You ever heard of Greece? Yup they failed at communism. All socialism = communism.

@Xatsuna:

"Socialism can be a way to full communism."

- fixed that for you.

Also, socialism, just like communism, capitalism or any other "ism," come in more than one flavor...

And finally, you list all those socialist countries that have ties with communism, without actually showing how it's necessarily a bad thing. And without actually providing information into the factors that lead to Greece's collapse, mentioning their collapse along with them being a 100% socialist communist country in the same sentence, is merely coincidental. A socialist/communist country collapsing is not the same as a socialist/communist country collapsing because of socialism/communism.

I'd feel bad about pirating games if they didn't release shit after wet, steamy shit year after year. Micro-trans, season passes, nickel-and-diming everywhere, not too mention the same old gameplay cliché's and generic marketing. It's not like the consumer stands to gain anything if pirating disappeared. That's console gaming, tho. PC is another matter.

@johnnycenaa: I think that happened about 10 years ago or so now. It was called DLC, which later lead to Season Passes, which will surely lead to some other unholy abomination. Prices were going up one way or another.

What i'll be most curious about is..... What will these companies point their finger at for terrible sales now that piracy won't be a valid scapegoat? Bad weather? Should be comical to say the least.

"Well you see, we later discovered that we actually innovated 'too much'. "

@NbAlIvEr10000:

The consoles have a form of DRM, which is why you need the game in the console to play them. It's also becoming more popular for consoles (and PC's) to have always online games, which prevents people from cracking them, hence DRM. Ever try to play a burnt console game on a console? You can't, unless you mod the console - again, DRM....

@stoney28z: The game is $79.99 because of the CDN dollar. This isn't a reason to "crack games in Canada now more than ever". Everything is more expensive except gas (currently). Food. Clothing. Books. Entertainment etc. Do you condone stealing those too? Just because games can be cracked and downloaded illegally online (same for music, movies, software etc) doesn't mean that you should do it. How about this? If you can't afford a game, movie, software application or CD you uh, just don't buy it until you have the funds to do so? What kind of society do we live in where people just think this stuff is owed to them because they want it, and they want it NOW? Ridiculous.
