PlayStation 4 crosses 6 million sales following strong Japan launch

Just look at the early PS3 days when they were trolling every SOny related site they can find. Now that the tables have turned this generation it's only natural that some have become a little less cocky, but still as vocal and as agressive.

They've built a heavy base with PSOne and PS2, and for many of those early Sony adopters, it was their first game system, and these same people are at the target age for video game consumerism. However, dominance doesn't last forever, and innovation is key in this business. Sony has made a lot of smart moves late into the PS3's life. However, for Microsoft to even have sold over 3 million systems with the E3 fail and constant media backlashes (basically opinion pieces slapped together to gain web clicks), that is still a pretty amazing achievement. 4 years ago, people were thinking the PS3 would never pick up in sales. What was news today is no longer news tomorrow for the casual buyer. Both systems will be in millions upon millions of peoples homes in the coming years. They will both be successful.

They are a very dedicated base, and it shows in comment sections alone. Sony has built this base since 1995, so there is clear reason why they have a higher dedicated following and display more a personal passion for Sony and the Playstation brand. Microsoft really tapped into the market with the 360, and that is the extent of their history in the video game business.

I took your conclusion and wiped my ass with it, and came up with a new conclusion. There are just more Sony supporters worldwide, nothing more....nothing less.

Microsoft were doing marketing like crazy, giving out free consoles , paying people on youtube and machinima to say nice things about the xbox one, trade ur ps3 towards an xbox one , and now the free titanfall with every xbox and the price cut in UK , bla bla etc.. what did sony do ? a T.V ad. and a deal with taco bell ?

Not to mention the multiplayer aspect; I like to co op meaning I'll have to make different characters at different levels to be able to play co op at random at different parts of the game.

Not to mention there are usually things you missed the first time around and the game gets harder each playthrough

It's really the only game I complete more then once

Thanks to the internet, social features, and gaming being more mainstream than 15 years ago, it should be expected. After all, the Xbox One is the 2nd fastest selling console under the PS4, and people are calling it a failure.

They risked not having the amount of consoles to build a base in more parts of the world. However, it was still a bit of a risky move that worked well for them. However, after the early adopters get their pickups, the sales between both machines will slow down, at least until Christmas. Within the next few years, it will be the features and games that convince the majority base (casuals) to fork over money. Microsoft, with proper advertising, may have the device that can penetrate that market, and their strategy is clearly long term focused. The Xbox One has many things going on in the background, and MS will desperately need to articulate their goals between all of their products and how they work together.

For both companies, we haven't seen anything yet. Sony is gamer marketing focused right now, and it is clear that their strategy was the best initial strategy.
