PlayStation Exec Says First-Party Game Lineup Was “Not As Strong” in 2015

“Next year, our first party lineup looks incredible."

While Microsoft is touting that it has the greatest games lineup in the history of Xbox going into the 2015 holiday season, Sony has commented that while their offering is strong, it could have been stronger.

Speaking to GameSpot at a PlayStation 20th Anniversary event in Sydney, Michael Ephraim, Managing Director of Sony Computer Entertainment Australia, acknowledged that Sony have been focusing on third-party partnerships to promote PlayStation 4 during the end-of-year period.

No Caption Provided

“Games that have been released this year, from Destiny, Call of Duty, Star Wars -- most of them we have a collaboration with for additional content if you play on PlayStation 4, so we’re pretty confident with the way Christmas is going. The demand is strong." Ephraim said.

He added: "We have worked very closely with third parties this year because our first party lineup was not as a strong as we would have liked."

The PlayStation 4 had only a handful of major exclusives in 2015, a list which includes Bloodborne, The Order: 1886, and Until Dawn.

However, Ephraim was very optimistic about 2016: "Next year, our first party lineup looks incredible. You’ve got Street Fighter, Uncharted 4, No Man’s Sky, The Last Guardian, Gran Turismo. These are all exclusives, and two of them are new franchises."

Sony is also planning on releasing its virtual reality headset PlayStation VR to consumers next year. While Ephraim was positive about the technology, he was hesitant to position the new hardware as a vital part of Sony’s 2016 strategy.

"We’re still in the planning stages of PlayStation VR, and clearly based on the responses we’re getting so far: it’s very solid. But our core business right now is PlayStation 4 and the offerings we have on there. Disc, digital, downloadable season passes, and endless entertainment. So, it’ll be another component."

"In 12 months time, PlayStation 4 is still the primary business because it’s the foundational device. PlayStation 4 will still be our primary objective to grow the install base. PlayStation VR is new, everyone wants it, there are a lot of publishers developing for it. But whether it’s going to just go completely nuts early, or if it’s a slow build, time will tell."

Though his outlook was reserved, Ephraim, who has been at the helm of PlayStation’s Australian business for 22 years and also serves as a Vice President of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, was positive that the company’s willingness to do a variety of different things was part of its success this generation.

"The PS4 is the fastest selling console ever for PlayStation globally and in Australia, PS4 is the fastest selling console in hardware history” he stated.

“What we’re doing is we’re saying: How do you want to play games? What kind of games do you want to play? Indie games? Big games? Do you want to play online? Do you want to stream older back catalog games? And next year, do you want to play games in VR? It’s the evolution of PlayStation 4 morphing into where the trends are, and to how people want to ingest content now."

Not the best year, but I don't think it was as bad as some people make out. It all depends on the type of games you are looking for...

Glad Sony has finally admitted the line up this year was " not as strong " its just a shame the ps4 fanboys can't/won't agree even when it's plain to see.

This plays a big part in why I've only powered up my PS4 to do updates this past year. Looking forward to UC:4 where all that will change; hell I might even renew PS+ and try multiplayer.

Glad they've admitted their Autumn first party line wasn't great, that UC4 delay left a huge gap that wasn't filled. It doesn't seem to have hurt hardware sales though.

The only dev I could think of is the Tenchu team where they're developing this.
From what I can see, plenty of peeps would want it.... heh..

@thecman25: Lol okay, fanboy.

Phil Spencer has admitted the to some of the issues that have happened with the Xbox One (Rise of the Tomb Raider deal, announcement of console, forcing Kinect, etc.). So have the other big two (Sony and Nintendo) with some of their past mistakes. Hell, if you want to, you can even throw SEGA in the pile.

You have no idea what you're talking about, or you're just a blatant fanboy.

Bloodborne might be the only very good game they had but it was better than any microsoft exclusive. Wii U had quality exclusives but as usual hardly any 3rd part support. Best exclusives this year per platform for me were Gears of War remaster, Bloodborne and Mario maker

Let's be honest here. Sony has dropped the ball on their first party games. Bloodborne was the only great game they had this year, and Until Dawn was good if you like movie games. Their fall lineup was completely barren, and remakes didn't help that. While on the other hand, MS had 3 major exclusives this fall.

I'm a huge fan of Sony's games, and that's why it's so disappointing to see them, year after year, fail to give a good exclusive lineup. All I see them showing off is Destiny, COD, Battlefront, and other major multiplat games. That's exactly what MS did with the 360 last gen, and look what happened. Sony has shown they have talented studios, and should be able to deliver. But if they keep it up, they deserve to lose this gen, just like MS did last gen.

@zeldafan195: Sony definitely had a couple of awesome third party games this year (Until Dawn and Bloodborne). Let's just hope not too much gets delayed into 2017 from Sony. Either way though, Microsoft and Sony will be toe-to-toe when it comes to major exclusives.

Xbox: Gears of War 4, Halo Wars 2, Scalebound, Quantum Break, Recore, Crackdown 3, Sea of Thieves, Fable Legends, Cuphead, and more.

Playstation: Uncharted 4, Street Fighter V, Horizon: Zero Dawn, No Man's Sky, Ratchet & Clank, The Last Guardian, Wild (maybe?), and more.

Oh, I seriously wonder if PlayStation VR can live up to the great, iconic success that PlayStation Move experienced.

Also, this is an uncharacteristically self-critical statement from Sony or any company for that matter. You never, EVER!!! say anything that might imply that your products are anything but top notch. I await a "clarification" from Sony, letting us know that this guy didn't mean what he actually really meant.

@Savior4Life: It continues to outsell because it's not just first party games people are interested in

As far as I'm concerned, I only care about the third party and free-to-play games, believe it or not, Planetside 2 and DC Universe Online are pretty fun

No need for any first party games when I got tons of third party

@wkadalie: I have plenty to play on my X1. I just beat Tomb Raider and it was phenomenal and Halo 5 is a blast. I'm still going through Forza and have plenty more to play elsewhere. My PS4 hasn't been turned on in a couple of months.

I'm not sure how people are completing these games these fast.

Well, apparently it's alright since with only 1 or 2 major exclusives coming out this year you were able to dominate the competition (if you can call it that) by historic margins worldwide.

I mean with minimal exclusives they were able to dominate Microsoft's "best holiday lineup of all time" in their home country.

can't imagine the carnage if Sony really put forth the effort with their exclusives. It could be just Sony and NIntendo in the cosole game once the dust clears........again

@bob15x: never said Microsoft would go away, just said it might be Nintendo and Sony.meaning Microsoft could be irrelevant. And it very well could be. Their "best lineup of all time" failed to crack the top 10 save for the only game Microsoft has ever had. If that's the best they can do, how will they remain relevant when Sony and Nintendo are throwing haymakers all next year?

They really might not be, just reality

@bob15x: It's not really fanboy ism, if facts are facts. Sony basically admitted they have a shitty exclusive lineup, and that they like to work with 3rd party studio. So aren't they making the minimum effort for maximum profit ? You just proved your fanboy ism by completely disregarding the obvious. Whether MS will go away or stay as the titan that they are is a matter if/when, not just fanboy ism.
