PlayStation Exec Says First-Party Game Lineup Was “Not As Strong” in 2015

“Next year, our first party lineup looks incredible."

While Microsoft is touting that it has the greatest games lineup in the history of Xbox going into the 2015 holiday season, Sony has commented that while their offering is strong, it could have been stronger.

Speaking to GameSpot at a PlayStation 20th Anniversary event in Sydney, Michael Ephraim, Managing Director of Sony Computer Entertainment Australia, acknowledged that Sony have been focusing on third-party partnerships to promote PlayStation 4 during the end-of-year period.

No Caption Provided

“Games that have been released this year, from Destiny, Call of Duty, Star Wars -- most of them we have a collaboration with for additional content if you play on PlayStation 4, so we’re pretty confident with the way Christmas is going. The demand is strong." Ephraim said.

He added: "We have worked very closely with third parties this year because our first party lineup was not as a strong as we would have liked."

The PlayStation 4 had only a handful of major exclusives in 2015, a list which includes Bloodborne, The Order: 1886, and Until Dawn.

However, Ephraim was very optimistic about 2016: "Next year, our first party lineup looks incredible. You’ve got Street Fighter, Uncharted 4, No Man’s Sky, The Last Guardian, Gran Turismo. These are all exclusives, and two of them are new franchises."

Sony is also planning on releasing its virtual reality headset PlayStation VR to consumers next year. While Ephraim was positive about the technology, he was hesitant to position the new hardware as a vital part of Sony’s 2016 strategy.

"We’re still in the planning stages of PlayStation VR, and clearly based on the responses we’re getting so far: it’s very solid. But our core business right now is PlayStation 4 and the offerings we have on there. Disc, digital, downloadable season passes, and endless entertainment. So, it’ll be another component."

"In 12 months time, PlayStation 4 is still the primary business because it’s the foundational device. PlayStation 4 will still be our primary objective to grow the install base. PlayStation VR is new, everyone wants it, there are a lot of publishers developing for it. But whether it’s going to just go completely nuts early, or if it’s a slow build, time will tell."

Though his outlook was reserved, Ephraim, who has been at the helm of PlayStation’s Australian business for 22 years and also serves as a Vice President of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, was positive that the company’s willingness to do a variety of different things was part of its success this generation.

"The PS4 is the fastest selling console ever for PlayStation globally and in Australia, PS4 is the fastest selling console in hardware history” he stated.

“What we’re doing is we’re saying: How do you want to play games? What kind of games do you want to play? Indie games? Big games? Do you want to play online? Do you want to stream older back catalog games? And next year, do you want to play games in VR? It’s the evolution of PlayStation 4 morphing into where the trends are, and to how people want to ingest content now."

Yeah I usually don't buy Sony's consoles for first-party games, weird huh?

With Nintendo is generally the opposite, their 1st party games rock.

Yep 2015 first party lineup was poor only Bloodborne and some old Uncharted games.

The reveal of the new Gran Turismo game was very disappointing aswell as it's not a proper full Gran Turismo game it's only a cut down version of the game with only Superclass car tournaments and I fear may be online only which would be a no buy for me so they've kind of ruined that one.

"How do you want to play games?" I don't want to have to rebuy them again after already paying for them in the past.

Hopefully Last Guardian and Uncharted 4 are good. No exclusive first party first person shooters for next year either I see damn it. Microsoft have Halo I mean come on ffs Sony.

So many idiot fanboys. Fucking hell, stop fretting over what other people enjoy playing and just enjoy your own games and console. If you have to take time out to come on here and post negative comments about someone else's choice of console, you're flat out insecure about your own. Period.

@domiddian: F8ck yeah! If I could buy you a beer right now I would good sir.

I view this site most days and pretty much every comment section reverts to an all out fan boy war. I'd like to be in the shoes of the gamespot moderators, they must shit their pants with laughter at the absurdity of their customers, they really must. I mean come on, does anyone really give two shits? I just purchased a PS4 a few weeks ago, my first PS system ever. I thought I'd try something different after 30+ years of gaming, who gives a flying f$ck? How is that a good or bad thing other than the only person it is relevant too and that is me handing over my cash for it?

If the comments section of gaming sites is a true reflection of society, then our planet is more f*cked than I thought was ever possible. Fanboys (Xbots, Pony's, PC Elites) unite, get in line and lick my salty old ballz. Also maybe step away from the games for a while, get some sun, go for a surf, skate, ride, or run, get laid, have a beer, read a book, there is a shit load more to life than pissing your hours away in front a of monitor playing games and spewing negativity at randoms you'll never meet. You sad bunch of twisted c&nts. Ok rant over :)

@domiddian:

Shut your damn pie hole you Xbot! You're just worried that people will s.....blablabla!!

You make an awful lot of sense mate, but the above is mostly how you're greeted. I like gaming, as in: gaming as a whole. I celebrate my hobby and if Halo 5 or UC4 is out and I'm rockin that I'm not gonna hide it. Unfortunately people call you out for being a fanboy.

Fanboyism is destroying the industry. There are so many things we as gamers have influence on when we stick together, the modern Xbox One is the living proof of that, but nowadays people seem to be too busy with their imaginitive war to really look at how we're being screwed. People rather devote their lives to defending a piece of plastic than to ask for what they should be getting.

Gaming in itself is beautiful, but i could do without these sentiments.

@boerew0rs: You had me going for a second there! ;-)

Unfortunately, you speak the truth. I have been gaming for over 25 years and fanboyism has always been a part of it, but I don’t recall it ever being as bad as it is today. In some small way it’s a little better because when I was at school, people were literally bullied over which console they owned. At least on the internet, it’s all behind a rather anonymous front end and you don’t have to worry too much about what people say because they’re complete strangers. But on the other hand, I’ve never known such vehemence in defence of a brand as well as just the sheer amount of bullshit spoken in said defence of brand. People come out with all sorts.

I’m like you; I own multiple systems and just enjoy games. We shouldn’t be arguing with one another, but united in telling these multi-million dollar corporations what they need to give us in order to keep us interested in their respective platforms. The crux of it is; people just need to grow the **** up.

@numinex10: How is that a bad thing you shallow minded c*nt. Have you played any? You do realise that your next triple A game is probably from a company who was once an indie? Or the triple A you play in 10 years from now is probably from one of todays indies who gets a lucky break? It's part of the evolution of gaming and based on your shallow minded comments, I can assume you've probably never played any? It's never been a better time to be a gamer, and these indies are a massively important part of YOUR gaming future. These guys are moving the industry forward with new idea's and pushing the big boys to keep on their toes. If you're happy playing cod for the rest of eternity then, fair enough your comment is valid.

@freeryu: Sorry I may have jumped the gun :) but he didn't say they were good either. If I take a sample of say 95% of all comments posted on gaming sights most of them are from crazed fanboys talking trash on each others systems. If my eye's aren't mistaking I detect a hint of sarcasm in the comment and I assume he's being like 99% of the other morons who talk each others preferred platform down. Again I could be wrong, and apologies if I am, but it's hard to spot a positive through all the negative BS.

@lvsolja:

Fans will just say about anything... This makes no sense at all: there's no one forcing you to buy every game and I for one could've gone for a real PS 1st party game; cause what even the Sony suit doens't seem to get: SFV, NMS, Bloodborne, The Order. Until Dawn....all not 1st party efforts.

Step up your game Sony! And fanboys: a real fan is critical when the situation calls for it. When even Sony execs say it wasn't good 1st party wise, you better believe it wasn't. Stop defending, start asking more... Both you and Sony deserve it.

Right? Apparently Street Fighter is also first-party. Not to mention that neither of those are true exclusives. Dude should have listed Horizon and Dreams instead.

Lack of first party titles.... and yet we still have more exclusives than Xbox One has had in the past two years combined. What does that say about PlayStation???

@alaskancrab: all it means is that Japanese developers and publishers have saved the PS4 from being another WiiU. Without those 'Exclusives' the PS4 would be pretty barren

@sladey: Another Wii U. What a fucking joke. Err, no, unlike the Wii U there's plenty of third party content. 95% of both consoles' libraries are multiplatform. And guess what? Most people want to play those multiplatforms on the PS4, not the fucking Xbox.
