PS Vita First Edition Bundles sell out

Sony exec goes on the record about 3G adoption, proprietary memory cards, Naughty Dog's (lack of) Vita development, and the future of the PSP.

The PlayStation Vita officially launches in North America, Europe, Latin America, Australasia, the Middle East, and Africa today. To mark the worldwide rollout of the handheld, Sony's senior vice president of PlayStation brand marketing Guy Longworth spoke with GameSpot to make a last-minute push for the system launch and answer questions about the First Edition Bundle, customer adoption of the system's 3G features, the decision to use proprietary memory cards for the Vita, and more.

Gamers around the world can finally get hands-on with the Vita.
Gamers around the world can finally get hands-on with the Vita.

GameSpot: What are you looking at to determine if the international launch is a success?

Guy Longworth: PlayStation Vita is a long-term platform for us, so we're in this for the long term. We see it as a 5- to 10-year platform, and we'll look at the success on a by-market and then at a total international level in 12 and 18 and 24 months' time to see how we're doing. Obviously we want to get off to a good start, but we're in this for the long term, and we think that the value proposition that was put together is really going to resonate with core gamers and casual gamers over time. So it's a long-term play for us.

GS: You took a novel tack to launching hardware, with the First Edition Bundle allowing some gamers to get their hands on the hardware a week early. How has the First Edition Bundle promotion gone so far?

GL: It went great. We sold out our prelaunch bundles, so we're excited about that. We got a great response to it.

GS: What are the strongest sellers out of the gate from the First Edition Bundle week?

GL: The best-selling so far is Uncharted: Golden Abyss. It's been warmly received, and that really doesn't surprise us given the popularity of that franchise with our core consumers. There are a number of others that appear to be doing well: Little Deviants, Hot Shots Golf, Mod Nation Racers… It's very early days, but Uncharted is top of the charts so far.

Nathan Drake's first portable outing is proving the most popular Vita game at launch.
Nathan Drake's first portable outing is proving the most popular Vita game at launch.

GS: You were quoted in a Eurogamer interview saying Naughty Dog would be making games for PS Vita, but their community manager has since publicly stated they had no plans for that. Can you straighten this out?

GL: I think I was slightly misquoted. I was asked the question which studios will be making games for Vita, and my answer to that question was, "A lot of our studios." I might have said "all" by mistake--that's not impossible. But a large number of our studios are currently making Vita games is the fact of the matter. Naughty Dog currently aren't. So if I caused any confusion, I'm sorry about that.

GS: What was the thinking behind going with proprietary memory cards and the pricing behind them?

GL: There are many different types of memory out there, and what we have is a very high-end piece of flash memory that comes in an extraordinarily small size. What we're trying to do is make sure that the gamer has the best possible experience and the proprietary memory we think gives gamers the best possible experience because we can very much control that memory and make sure it's the highest possible quality.

GS: How is the postlaunch software lineup shaping up?

GL: We've got an incredible lineup of first- and third-party games this year. At launch we've got 26 titles, and there are currently over 100 titles in development worldwide, meaning we're going to have compelling content right throughout the year. You're going to have a whole range of titles coming out, including Ruin, Little Big Planet, and then from third parties, all the big brands are going to be there: Street Fighter, Assassin's Creed, BioShock, Mortal Kombat, and, of course, Call of Duty.

Sony is selling pricey proprietary memory cards for the Vita. This 32GB card sells for $100.
Sony is selling pricey proprietary memory cards for the Vita. This 32GB card sells for $100.

GS: Why aren't PS One Classics or PS2 titles from the PlayStation Network available at launch?

GL: At the moment we're very much focused on getting our new first-party lineup and third-party lineup out there and available for consumers. So that's our focus right now.

GS: Is the Vita competing with the iPhone, Android, and tablets?

GL: What's happened is these new devices have introduced a whole bunch of people to gaming who haven't been in gaming before. That's good news. The pie is growing. In terms of the experiences that people get from an iPhone, an Android device, or a tablet, it's a relatively casual experience, a limited gaming experience for gamers. With PlayStation Vita, what you have is an incredibly immersive gaming experience given the functionality of the product, the franchises and games coming out. And it's really like having a home console in your pocket; it's like having a PlayStation 3 and taking it with you. The experience the PS Vita offers is night and day from the experiences you can get on a tablet, an Android phone, or an iPhone.

GS: How has the 3G adoption been?

GL: We wouldn't disclose that at this stage. We're in the very early stages of launch. But we're very encouraged by the reaction we've had with people looking at the 3G version. I think they realize by taking 3G, it means you can basically play wherever you want to, whenever you want to, and be connected the whole time. And not just through the games but also to your social media with the apps we have like Facebook and Twitter. Consumers are going to look at that and realize that it's something that makes a lot of sense to have now, and also for the future. I think it really future-proofs them in terms of some of the things that will come down the line in terms of gaming experiences that will be possible through 3G, to be able to play online with your friends. We think gamers are understanding that, but we'll wait and see what happens.

GS: The PSP came out in 2005, so it's nearing seven years old, and its successor is launching. Should we expect it to be phased out soon, or do you see it as having a lot of life left in it?

GL: Well, the PSP is still a great entry-level device for people who want a handheld gaming experience. PS Vita is a revolutionary game-changing experience. It's very different. I think for a period of time both will live comfortably next to each other in the same way PS3 and PS2 have lived comfortably together for a period of time. It's an entry point for people into the PlayStation handheld experience at a relatively modest entry price with a wide range of content, so we expect it to be around for a period of time.

Just got mine and i'm blown away by the screen and graphic, its beyond what i had expected in all aspects. It feels solid, sticks feel really nice, screen is bright and crisp. Touch is very sensitive and i go as far as say its better then my iPhone4 in responsiveness. I'm downloading Uncharted, unit13 (or was it 31) + a few other demos at the moment so i will try it some more tonight but already i'm in love with it. ps. I really think Vita is worth every cent for what i get. pss. Sure the memory card is a bit pricy but thats a one time cost. I will myself get a 32G later and only use that. NOw i got a 4Gig with the bundle.

Just like to add: I'm a Sony fan. I own and love the PS3, I think it's a great system. That said, have zero interest in the Vita cos it's too damn expensive. You need the system, a protective case, memory cards, and games, which cost 40 freaking dollars. Not worth it. Sorry Sony, but if you wanna be stupid and only try to cater to upper middle class/upper class consumers, you will lose many of your potential buyers (like me, for example). Us college students have enough trouble paying rent and keeping the refrigerator stocked with enough food to not starve, plus, I buy PS3 games as well. If I was any broker I'd be on Wall Street.

"What we're trying to do is make sure that the gamer has the best possible experience and the proprietary memory we think gives gamers the best possible experience because we can very much control that memory and make sure it's the highest possible quality" Translation: We love money and wanna make sure to bleed every last drop of it out of the consumer. We do this by creating a new, unnecessary proprietary memory format because we can control it, and make sure we can charge the highest price for it.

Misleading headline is misleading... criminally so. It's the 'pre-launch' bundles that sold out.

I picked up my Vita today, with Uncharted and a 16gig memory card The system's great, the screen is gorgeous on it and I hope it sells well, but the analog sticks are to small and feel a bit loose, aiming in Uncharted was a bit irritating, not very responsive at all I think the 3DS touch screen is better for FPS games, anyone who's played Metroid hunters would know

For those talking about how the Vita memory cards are supposed to stop piracy...it won't. DRM never stops piracy. It only punishes those good customers who actually pay for their products. Like how noone could access their Ubisoft games because the DRM servers went down. Didn't affect the pirates what so ever, but the paying customers couldn't access the product they paid for. And making memory cards proprietary to stop pirating doesn't excuse the price they're charging for those cards.

I'm glad that I got the Psvita first edition bundle. The 4GB memory card and the Pack in Game "little Deviants" help seal the deal. Sony would be best at including a memory card at the very least with the PSvita from here on out.

Those replies needed a little extra translation: "Class 10 SD and MicroSD cards are weaksauce compared to our proprietary cards, that's why we charge more than twice as much." "We promised the devs that we would push their games first, by not having our classics available on PSN, owners are more likely to buy PSV titles as a way to use their new devices." "A different dev did the game that Naughty Dog is famous for... But, you're a great reporter for trying to ambush me about a recent quote from them." "Yes, the PSP is for children you wouldn't trust a smartphone with and software pirates, but we still get some PSN sales on the device!"

@serious That may be true however that didn't stop people from producing games for the DS and it had its big share of pirates. It still doesn't matter. Most people don't want to pay that much for a memory card. They just want a machine that can produce. If the PSP had the DS' support, it would have done more than fine regardless of "pirating" issues.

That's great for you jerks that bought it. I shall continue grumbling in great jealousy, because the money I was going to spend to preorder the FEB has now gone towards sending my unexpectedly dead PS3 to Sony. Grumble, grumble, Hmph. Edit: Yikes, either people aren't reading past the first sentence or they don't have a sense of humor. They most certainly aren't sympathetic to my PS3/Vita-less plight. : |

I believe he can say they sold out because they shipped all of their stock to the vendors (stores). I am pretty sure that is how Sony (and most likely other businesses) announce their sales figures. We can think of them more as shipped figures but technically Sony did sell them I suppose, you know, to Walmart, Best Buy, Sam's Club...etc.

I believe Sony went with the high end memory card to prevent piracy. Its weird how many of you want a high end piece of electronic equipment but feel you shouldn`t have to pay for it. I had tons of fun with the my psp. However many 3rd parties didn`t make games for it due to the piracy issue. By making the memory proprietary Sony made it a crime to have any chips or compoents of their memory. See before many could make SD cards. Which made it hard to police. So if you`re going to blame anyone for the price of the memory its the pirates that some of hope will crack Vita so you can steal games. Which leaves Sony wasting time and resources blocking instead of making games an apps. Now if you will excuse me I have a Vita to play with.

Sold out? Sure Sony, will you give us $200 if we can find them on shelves? ;) I swung by two Best Buys in my area in my travels today (both after lunch - both sold out of Kingdom's of Amalur!). Salesguys at both said that they only had 6-7 pre-orders at their respective locations and had not sold a single copy yet - even to the people with pre-orders.

IDK, Vita will just end up like PSP did, a crapload of games that started out as console games and none really that were designed from the ground up as portable games except the occasional game here and there. $250 is a lot to ask at this point but it would be forgivable if memory was dirt cheap and boxed games weren't overpriced and the OS was the same XMB as PSP & PS3. Eh, give it a year or two....when memory prices drop and the system price drops people will grab it in droves.....The big issue then will be can it overtake 3DS? probably not....

@Krazen- the sony exec said it all. Its' because they want to "control that memory" Yes the Vita will be as good, just like the 3ds is, given time, but after hearing about all the hardware issues in its Japanese release not too long ago that Sony never addressed, and the ridiculous prices of the proprietary memory cards, I'm gonna wait on this one.

More like a monopoly. I just got my PS Vita today and I honestly think, this quote is such a bad excuse. I have an 8 Gb MICRO memory stick pro duo for the PSP Go and can't even use it for downloading my PSP games on PSN. Good thing the store is having a promo and their giving away a 4Gb memory card for free with a Vita purchase. Again, they could have used their existing memory stick pro and they could have convince a lot of PSP owners to upgrade. Also, their current memory stick pro duo should be fast enough to run digital games running on VITA hardware.

Vita is a very good handheld. If Sony just priced memory cards for a lower price im sure Vita adoption would rise by a lot since 250$ is not high for a high end system at launch.

And for you idgits that keep saying it's getting bad reviews, I submit: << LINK REMOVED >> Average the ENTIRE launch lineup out and you get an AVERAGE review of 7.1 That's a solid C and when you consider that 12 of those reviews are BETTER than a 75. Yes there are a couple of crap titles but seriously, stop being fanboys/haters. Take it for what it is as a GAMER. It's a console in your hands. Let's compare those numbers to the 3DS launch: << LINK REMOVED >> An average review of 62. And of those games 3!! were above 75.

@MEDzZ3RO - For the 3G you need to set up with AT&T, pay a monthly fee, and then you'll be able to game onlie or go online anywhere within 3G coverage; which is pretty much anywhere AT&T phones work.

@MEDzZ3RO Not much beyond internet everywhere and leader-boards always being updated for games. Maybe they will bring gaming to 3g but doubt it will be any good. Edit: Just read that some games are using 3G for online play. Up to the developers though so not all will have it.

The way I understand this... - "PlayStation Vita is a long-term platform for us" = "t's ok if we have poor launch sales"I - "the proprietary memory we think gives gamers the best possible experience because we can very much control that memory and make sure it's the highest possible quality." = "New DRM system and a way to avoid competiton" - "the PSP is still a great entry-level device" = "Still good, still good, please buy!" I feel nauseated....

Ummm how are they sold out? I have Sam's Clubs that have a TON of them in stock. From Tuesday of last week up until Sunday the 4 they had never moved. I bought one. Still he said SOLD OUT. Not still available at stores. Edit: High quality cards huh? That why my 16Gb card reads 14Gb on the Vita? You'd better believe SOMEONE will mod the microSD holder eventually. Because a loss of 2 Gbs for "quality" cards is ludicrous. Haters gunna hate. Keep down checking me for speaking the truth.

"piece of flash memory that comes in an extraordinarily small size" lolno, they're the same size as MicroSD cards, which have been around for years and which are far cheaper.
