PS4 Getting "Unprecedented Rush" of Big Games in 2016, Exec Says

2016 will bring an "unprecedented rush" of big games for PlayStation 4 that, along with PlayStation VR, will combine for a package so compelling that system sales are likely to grow even further. That's according to PlayStation executive Shuhei Yoshida, who said in an interview with 4Gamer (via DualShockers) that 2016 is shaping up to be a banner year for the PS4.

"2016 marks an unprecedented rush of big titles for PS4," Yoshida said. "It's also the year of the long-awaited launch of PlayStation VR. It's the year PS4 users, and those who are on the fence on whether to buy it will absolutely think, 'It's good to have a PS4.' Please look forward to it."

Some of the big PS4 console exclusives for 2016 include Street Fighter V, Uncharted 4: A Thief's End, Horizon: Zero Dawn, Gran Turismo Sport, and The Last Guardian. There are also going to be a number of big-name multiplatform games released on PS4 next year, of course.

In media interviews this year, PlayStation executives spoke openly about the PS4's "sparse" lineup of first-party games for 2015. Just this month, PlayStation boss Michael Ephraim acknowledged that Sony focused more on third-party relationships in 2015 in part because "our first-party lineup was not as a strong as we would have liked."

The PS4 enters 2016 as the best-selling new-generation console with sales in excess of 30 million units. For its part, Microsoft is also claiming that 2016 will be a huge year for Xbox games.

I don't doubt him, and actually agree that a combination of loads of big AAA games alongside the release of one the major VR headsets in the next couple of years is going to really give PlayStation a pretty huge push.

@amaneuvering: PS VR is going to be the PS4's downfall if anything. People will not be happy to buy one for $300-$400 on one that plays games more suited to the Kinect, and ends up with another failed Sony product on their hands afterwards. Sony are jumping on the bandwagon without any killer apps, as they do with every other device they copy.

Well, unless the NX is powerful enough between an X1 & PS4, this gen is the PS2/Xbox/Gamecube all over again. If the NX is powerful enough to be called a current gen system, then it's a 2 horse race with the leader quite far ahead. And the 3rd place One can focus on the Fourth iteration, One that isn't gimped this time around.

@e3man01: it's hardly gimped when the CPU is stronger, Sony went the DDR5 route and it paid off. Xbox had the Azure Cloud to come, how will Sony counter that? They can't making the PS4 the most underpowered. If the NX is to be believed it will be more powerful than both consoles, bringing 3rd party back on board, then why would anyone want a PS3.5 when they can have a more powerful Nintendo? Sony will only have themselves to blame for being arrogantly complacent rather than evolve the console and think of its userbase first like Xbox is doing, they will soon find themselves in between a rock and hard place and PS VR and anti consumerism won't save them.

@uchihasilver: don't expect much from it? You must have been sleeping when they showed Crackdown 3 using it. Remind us, being a blind fanboy and all, which PS4 game has 100% destructible environments again? They haven't been bleating much about it because it's not ready to do so yet, but no doubt E3 onwards well here a lot more about the Azure Cloud. They have even offered developers to ability to use it on PS4 and PC if they wish, you wouldn't see Sony ever doing that if the shoe was on the other foot. In fact they go out of their way to prevent Xbox getting anything.
