PS4 Slim Seemingly Confirmed With New Video [UPDATE]

The aesthetically questionable PS4 redesign appears to be real.

Update: Eurogamer has taken down its video, citing "legal advice." You can still see a picture of the system below.

Original Story: Following its somewhat bizarre leak over the weekend, the legitimacy of the so-called PS4 Slim has now been confirmed.

Eurogamer reports that it's visited the home of the person who claimed to have purchased the console through Gumtree (think UK's version of Craigslist) and verified the remodeled PS4 is real. Not only that, but it's shared a video of the console booting up.

The site also shared a new photo of the system, which you can see below.

Numerous photos of the system appeared online through NeoGAF on Sunday. They purported to show a redesigned PS4 that is noticeably smaller than the existing model. It features rounded corners and PlayStation symbols on the bottom.

This initially seemed dubious, but credence was lent to the rumor when the Wall Street Journal reported that two new PS4 consoles will be revealed in September. Previously, we believed only one new system--the more powerful PS4 Neo that Sony has already confirmed--would be revealed during an event in early September. Citing anonymous sources, the WSJ said the two new systems were part of an attempt to "maintain demand" for the PS4. An earlier report suggested both Neo and a slimmed-down PS4 would be revealed around the same time in September.

While the idea of announcing two new systems at the same time might sound odd, Microsoft did just that at E3. The first of those systems, the Xbox One S, launched earlier this month, with the more powerful Project Scorpio set to launch next year. The Xbox One S features a small increase in power to allow for HDR support, although this can translate into better performance for some Xbox One games. Whether the new PS4 Slim will also feature improved hardware--or will instead simply be a redesigned version of the system--remains to be seen.

We'll have more on the story as it develops. Sony's upcoming PlayStation event, where it's expected to announce the new consoles, is scheduled for September 7 at 3 PM ET / 12 PM PT.

I have both consoles and I prefer the one over ps4. I'm even selling it. The ps4 noise when running is like a turbine whilr the xbox one is pretty quiet in terms of noise. Not graphically speaking so shut up.

Ps4 looks way better than the Xbox one, and the smaller Xbox one looks way better than the smaller ps4.

This thing lacks creativity and feels uninspired. It feels like it was designed by and for yuppie a-holes who also enjoy purchasing starbucks and apple products. Wheres the color and individuality? Dont get me wrong i like the ps4 but even the xbox one s looks better than this.

Both. For example if i were to pick up an xbox 360 slim i wouldnt mind throwing down a few extra bucks for the gears console or the halo 4 console.

@sleepnsurfThat'll be interesting to see/hear. Remember it's using the much smaller/more efficient FinFET process, so the chips are easier to cool and they're not bumping the clock speeds above vanilla (unlike XB1 S and its HDR support, there's nothing to bump here). So in theory, it should be quieter. We'll find out soon..:

What people fail to grasp is, it doesn't -need- to look amazing. The Neo needs to look great.

- This is designed to be the cheapest, smallest, most inexpensive version of the vanilla PS4.

- With AMD moving to smaller FinFET manufacturing, everything involving the SoC gets to shrink.

- It's the budget unit. It's the 'gateway' basic model to bring people into the PS4 ecosystem.

- With 43 million installed PS4s, it becomes the lower production cost replacement to catch late buyers on a budget.

- It creates a low cost opportunity for those eyeing a PS4 + PSVR combo. With 43 million vanilla PS4s in the wild, that is the target for PSVR sales - not the Neo, which has zero installed users.

- Similarly, the budget design opens the doors to offering a combo PS4 slim + PSVR tandem SKU at a lower cost.

- Meanwhile, the Neo/PS4K is announced at the same time - fulfilling the 'premium' PS4 slot.

- The Neo contains the UHD Blu-ray/4K media support and serious bump to GPU performance.

- The Neo becomes the premium unit for power buyers and audio/video cognoscenti; those who have knowledge and desire for a spec upgrade.

- The leaks have always suggested Sony was preparing 'multiple new PS4 models' -- clearly the Slim and Neo take care of both ends of the spectrum.

- With a super inexpensive vanilla slim model with muted design, it becomes easier to contrast and highlight the high end Neo/PS4K model -- easier for the layman consumer to understand and contrast the difference.

- Ultimately you do not alienate the current user base, you expand the vanilla core to more mainstreamers with a very inexpensive unit, and you expand into an abundant hobbyist gamer and audiophile-videophile market with a high end unit.

It's a smart strategy, poised to make a significant impact through the final months of 2016.

@runstalker: Very true, Neo needs to look great, I mean i haven't owned a PS4 and I'm thinking about getting Neo. However my only concern is the price. If they made is 399 like the launch PS4 that I would definitely buy, but 599 and 699 is too extreme.

@runstalker: Wait. What? The current PS4 model will be the inexpensive one when the slim comes out, Right?

PS4(current model)-$299

PS4(slim)--$399

PS4(4K)--$599-$699

Am I missing something here? I know it's the slim but won't it be a little stronger graphically too?

@fig56: No. You are way off on your prices. The redesign ps4 is going to cost between $250-$299. The PS4 Neo is going to cost $399. This new sku PS4 is going to phase out the old model and it will be available to buy in stores on September 14th. It will be announced on September 7th officially by Sony. They are also going to announce the NEO officially on the 7th but who knows if a price and release date for the Neo will be mentioned or not. It won't be out before October because Sony has already told devs that all games being released October and later HAVE TO be made to run in both base model PS4, and PS4 Neo mode.

The Xbox Scorpio is going to be quite a bit more powerful than the Neo but I don't see that Xbox Scorpio model selling for anything less than $499.

@fig56: Historically, slim PS replaces fat PS... and usually pushes price down. That was the case with PS3 -> PS3 Slim and again, PS3 Slim -> PS3 UltraSlim... but I'm pretty sure PS2 had same transition. Don't remember PS1 transition that well...

So I'm guessing original PS4 will stop production and sell out whatever stocks are available... and then it's gone. Will it go cheaper than PS4 Slim, don't know.

PS4 Slim and PS4 Neo are taking over the torch. Well OK, Neo takes the torch, Slim will get a match or a lighter to carry on :)

@fig56Nah. Sony isn't upgrading the specs in the Slim. They have the PS4K for that. The timing is so close, why would they put the resources into a petty increase to the vanilla - not to mention potentially undermining the value of the PS4K upgrades.

So there's no bloody way the slim will be $399. It's the cheapy unit. There's also no way the Neo will be $599. That's almost unsellable.

Besides, it's really only with XB1 S that we've ever seen a meaningful spec/feature upgrade in a Slim model, and that's mainly because Microsoft needed to change manufacturing process and introduce a stopgap with some future-looking media features in the long period between S and Scorpio (some extra buzz for the brand didn't hurt either).

More powerful Slims are usually not a tradition; certainly not from Sony.:

@runstalker: Well considering all the hate for the Xbox looking like a VCR, I'd say you're wrong on the "doesn't need to look amazing" part. Or is this just another double standard? I don't give one turd what a console looks like but, judging by the X1 fallout, many, many people do.

@bdrtfm: From what I have seen, PS4 Slim still has slanted design of original PS4. I don't know... can't make my final judgement without seeing one in person. Based on available images, I think it looks OK.

I remember back in the days how PS2 Slim looked quite meh on promos, but in real, I found it quite cute - mostly because of small size.

I don't mind look of X1 either, though. It is a bit too big and boxy, but purposeful. X1s looks quite attractive, imho.

@runstalker: How does it not have to look amazing? Why would I buy an uglier console that does nothing better than the previous one? The previous one which will inevitably drop in price once this releases.

Prettier and cheaper doesn't leave much of a choice.

Quite frankly given the choice of the PS4 I have now and the pile of shit in that photo, I'm happy I didn't wait.

@dexdaI hear ya. It's more that we're a few months away from being 3 years deep into this generation, Sony's already moved 43 million units, a new spec is entering the fray. The challenge of compelling case aesthetics for launch is well behind them.

They still have a bunch of original vanilla stock on the shelves to discount/bundle and clear out (to make way for the slim and Neo), ideal for those who still haven't purchased a PS4 and prefer the old case design.

Casual late comers on a budget probably won't be bothered by the muted looks of the Slim this Christmas; they just "want a PS4 to play games", and the price should be ideal for them.

@hawkenshaOkay, I'll give you that. Until official confirmations, everybody is speculating.

But think about this: Do you really believe the 'surprise' announcement of an event in New York September 7th is revolving around the Slim announcement? Traditionally, Sony has not devoted resources this way to slim introductions. Especially for a core model with unchanged specs.

(It will be part of the event, but not anchoring the event)

Yes, PSVR will be in that event's showcase -- that's inevitable, but again: highly doubtful that it's the centerpiece of the show, because Sony has already been going "all-in" with PSVR coverage in every major recent gaming event/conference.

That leaves the PlayStation 4K as the single most likely focus for the near-term event in New York. And everything I stated above falls perfectly in line with leaked and/or announced expectations for the device.:
