PS4 Slim Seemingly Confirmed With New Video [UPDATE]

The aesthetically questionable PS4 redesign appears to be real.

Update: Eurogamer has taken down its video, citing "legal advice." You can still see a picture of the system below.

Original Story: Following its somewhat bizarre leak over the weekend, the legitimacy of the so-called PS4 Slim has now been confirmed.

Eurogamer reports that it's visited the home of the person who claimed to have purchased the console through Gumtree (think UK's version of Craigslist) and verified the remodeled PS4 is real. Not only that, but it's shared a video of the console booting up.

The site also shared a new photo of the system, which you can see below.

Numerous photos of the system appeared online through NeoGAF on Sunday. They purported to show a redesigned PS4 that is noticeably smaller than the existing model. It features rounded corners and PlayStation symbols on the bottom.

This initially seemed dubious, but credence was lent to the rumor when the Wall Street Journal reported that two new PS4 consoles will be revealed in September. Previously, we believed only one new system--the more powerful PS4 Neo that Sony has already confirmed--would be revealed during an event in early September. Citing anonymous sources, the WSJ said the two new systems were part of an attempt to "maintain demand" for the PS4. An earlier report suggested both Neo and a slimmed-down PS4 would be revealed around the same time in September.

While the idea of announcing two new systems at the same time might sound odd, Microsoft did just that at E3. The first of those systems, the Xbox One S, launched earlier this month, with the more powerful Project Scorpio set to launch next year. The Xbox One S features a small increase in power to allow for HDR support, although this can translate into better performance for some Xbox One games. Whether the new PS4 Slim will also feature improved hardware--or will instead simply be a redesigned version of the system--remains to be seen.

We'll have more on the story as it develops. Sony's upcoming PlayStation event, where it's expected to announce the new consoles, is scheduled for September 7 at 3 PM ET / 12 PM PT.

I mean, if the rumors are true, why would you buy a PS4 Slim (or whatever they are calling it) when a more powerful PS4 is in the works (if that is what they are doing with the second SKU)? Same issue Microsoft will have with the X1 S and Scorpio.

@dalger21The big difference, obviously, is timing. Microsoft introduced XB1 S a full 16 months before the Scorpio and gave it a halfway upgrade solution to try to ride out the long gap.

While Sony is putting the Slim (as the lower cost vanilla replacement) and PS4K (the higher spec, UHD Blu-ray/4K media unit) on the market simultaneously, 14 months ahead of Scorpio.

@dalger21: Simple, lower cost. Neither the Neo nor the Scorpio are designed or marketed to the average consumer but to the power users.

@dalger21: because sony will be phasing out the standard ps4 model anyways once the slim arrives. the whole point of the slim is to cut down manufacturing costs and make the product more profitable for them and cheaper for the consumer as well. either way, a slim will get released and is intended for new ps4 owners, not current ps4 owners who might want to upgrade.

@dalger21: You have to think like a soldier. PS4 S (though is not needed) is to combat X1s but this also buys Sony more time to up the ante and make Neo more powerful than Scorpio. Think about it...

@louixiii: WRONG! THe Slim model just replaces the current design as it costs less to manufacture (and it shows) and has absolutely no effect on the Neo release date which will not get delayed as you continue to say.

In regards to your comment..."THe Slim model just replaces the current design as it costs less to manufacture"

Please tell us something we don't know?

"Neo release date which will not get delayed as you continue to say."

So you're a Sony rep now? Do you work for Sony? Answer that one and get back with me okay little buddy xD

@smokerob79: So are you saying it's impossible for a company to delay the release of a console to make it more powerful? Is that what you're saying? If so...you don't live in reality

@smokerob79: BS...Sony themselves never announced the official specs of Neo. Rumors aren't facts, plus...a company can do what they want. They can send out new dev kits or what ever so nothing is set in stone...not when money is involved. That's business

@louixiii: You keep saying nothing is impossible "when money is involved" yet fail to realize that any change in design to match or top the Scorpio would not only result in a delay but cost SONY MILLIONS as well as alienate their supply and manufacturing partners. They are releasing it either this holiday or no later than March to beat the NX to market. SONY themselves have already alluded to the fact that it will release very soon.

@smokerob79: Wrong. You can do it because it's so similar to PC architecture. All they have to do is sendout updated kits. You people act like it's impossible to do that lol When billions are involved...what's a few dev kits?

@dlCHIEF58: "Down Low" Chief lol Please forgive the big words. I know that "pea" you call a brain has trouble processing certain things so I'll try to dumb my vocab down just for you xD

BTW...Processing: perform a series of mechanical or chemical operations on (something) in order to change or preserve it. To deal with (someone) using an official and established procedure.

Does that help any?

@louixiii: I'm really not clear on how this is buying Sony time. If the rumors are true, they'll be announcing the Neo at the same event as the slim model, so what time are they buying if the product is already finished and ready to demo? I can see how this will be the new standard PS4 (the way the slimmer PS3's took the place of the first-gen PS3), which will make it a more cost-effective option for people who don't have a system yet, but I'm not sure how it buys Sony time to make a more powerful Neo (which is rumored to launch this holiday season) when the Scorpio is a year and a half away.

@jvconroy: Because everyone is expecting them to officially announce Neo this year along with specs, but much like MS, they're going to announce PS4 slim with more VR games and hint at Neo instead of a full unveil.

@louixiii: Okay. That makes sense in how it could buy Sony time. That being said, I hope it's not the case as I would be HUGELY disappointed in not getting a full Neo unveiling at this event.

@jvconroy: Some people don't think outside the box and these Xbox Fanbots are trying to make me sound insane for introducing a possibility...as if a company can't delay a piece of hardware to make it equivalent to the competition's machine. All I hear is "devkits have gone out" which means nothing to a billion dollar company lol They don't get it...

@louixiii: you act like Sony just has money to blow. There is a reason why they're selling off everything. Dev companies are also spending money developing these Neo games. I just think Sony got caught off guard by Microsoft with the Scorpio and X1S.

@joshrmeyer: If it had been shot by ANYONE else, I'd call BS, because you could easily put the "PS4 Slim" there, plugged into power, and have a working standard PS4 off-camera that's actually hooked up to the TV. The fact that you can't see from screen to floor is shady. Like I said, the fact that it's Eurogamer is the only thing that lends it any credibility.

Respect to Eurogamer for their journalism. I had this down as a 3D printed machine with the innards of a PS4 5 minutes ago!

@gotrekfabian: "3D printed machine with the innards of a PS4". gotrekfabian, I think you're on the right track. Just think about this whole thing for a minute: an all new SONY (a Japanese multinational company) PS4 is revealed when someone buys one on a UK auction site?? A system that would have been designed in Japan and manufactured in China, ends up on the gray market in the UK?? That seems unlikely to me.

How hard would it now be for someone with a 3D printer and too much free time to make a case and stuff the innards of a current PS4 in it? And looking at the pics posted on various websites, it shows this new "PS4 Slim" with the PS logo facing right, NOT facing the front of the console... Hmm.

I smell a 2016 Piltdown Man.

Somewhere in the UK a person (or persons) is/are laughing their arses off, thinking "We pulled one off, and even the Wall Street Journal bought it"... :)

@elrupp: It is a little hard to believe. Its possible that the machines have gone into production already and that one was stolen from the manufacturer which was then bought by a UK civilian but to then offer it up on the UK auction sites for less than a new PS4 seems ridiculous.
