PS4 Tops NPD May 2014 Sales Charts in US Again; Wii U and Vita Both Up

The NPD Group releases its monthly U.S. sales data for the month of May.

The PlayStation 4 was the top-selling video game system in the United States for the fifth month running last month, according to the NPD Group's May sales report.

Specific numbers were not shared for sales of any of the systems, but it sounds as if it was a good month for all three console manufacturers. Sales of new video game hardware were up substantially from May 2013; consoles and portables combined for $187 million in sales, a 95 percent increase over the $96 million in sales during the same period last year.

As you might expect, this has a lot to do with the two most recent systems to be launched, but they weren't the only ones contributing. "While much of May 2014's hardware growth was due to Xbox One and PS4, there was also year-over-year growth for the Wii U, and PS Vita," said the NPD Group's Liam Callahan.

Nintendo has already released a statement regarding the NPD figures, attributing the Wii U's bump to strong sales of Mario Kart 8, which we know sold 1.2 million units worldwide in its first weekend alone. The company also noted that the 3DS was the second-best-selling system during the month.

Microsoft and Sony, on the other hand, have yet to discuss these latest figures. The Vita's sales bump may come as somewhat of a surprise given how little attention Sony has paid to it, but it can likely be attributed at least in part to the release of the Borderlands 2 system bundle. Released early in the month, the bundle introduced the Vita's first hardware revision to the U.S. market.

None of the three console makers has provided updates sales figures for their systems recently. The last official worldwide numbers put the PS4 at 7 million units (as of March 31), Xbox One at 3 million units (as of December 31, with 5 million shipped as of March 31), and Wii U at 6.17 million units (as of March 31).

When combining sales of new hardware and accessories, spending was up 52 percent year-over-year to $398 million. "The last time overall new physical channel growth saw a month-over-month increase of this magnitude was June 2008, with a 53 percent increase," Callahan said.

The NPD Group also reported on software sales in the U.S. during May, with Watch Dogs proving to be the top seller.

No surprise at all since the PS4 is still selling very well. What would be a surprise is if the wii u is outselling the X1.

The xbone price drop will not save the system, it already had a price drop with Titanfall included and it didn't work .

So much for those massive Wii U sales. 185% of crap is still mediocre.

So is the WiiU out selling the xbox one? Bwahahahaha and to top it off if anyone really wanted an Xbox one they would have bought it by now, at least everyone I know that is a true gamer. A lot of the people at work bought one. I have both a WiiU and PS4, which I bought both at launch. I personally can't give another dime to M$ after 3 RRD On my 360, which I loved until then. I have owned Peru much every console since Atari back in the day and must say the 360 was the worst built machine I have EVER bought. I will be honest I do miss my xbox controller! On the other hams I will not forgive them for treating me like dirt not hooking up the RRD sufferers with something.... heck Sony got hacked and I got like 6 games out of the deal! I know I'm going to be flamed by the M$ supporters but that is OK, I used to be a Sony hater myself but found out that they make a much better, longer lasting product. I think a lot of people realize that and that is why Sony is still outselling them.

But wait with the so called price drop you lose the vision of next gen, another thing M$ lied to their sheep about. We will never exclude the kinetic sure to our vision. LMMFAO! What they meant to say is we are not going to remove it till our butts get handed to us by Sony. A REAL prove drop would have not removed ANYTHING! They are not looking out for you, there are already games out that needs the kinect to function correctly let alone how many games "were" in development for the kinect that now has to be redone.... Open your eyes and realize they don't care about you.....

I concur, since they're getting desperate. I guess a company will lose their pride when their so called vision doesn't go as planned.

And when the price drop arrives and still the PS4 is outselling the xbone, what the excuse will be?

I was about to buy a Vita today but the memory cost is still too ridiculous to pay for. When I went to Gamestop and the store clerk pulled out the 64 GB I laughed so loudly that everybody wanted to know what was so funny. It was, wait for it....$130. ONE HUNDRED AND THIRTY COTTON PICKING DOLLARS!!!. I just ordered a 64 GB micro SD card for my son and it only cost me $16 with shipping. And seeing that you're gonna need tons of memory space for the games you're gonna spend most of your money on the ludicrously priced cards than anything else. Until the cards are reasonably priced Sony can kiss my big toe.

<< LINK REMOVED >> it's not that bad because the vita isn't a digital only handheld if it was that would be terrible but you can get physical copies of many of the games

But the memory is mandatory for most games. And if you have PSN+ you're gonna need lots of memory. Plus I'd rather carry all of my games on one stick then run the risk of losing those small game cartridges.

<< LINK REMOVED >> I deal with this by buying physical copies of the larger Vita games

An 8GB card can still hold a decent number of smaller downloadable titles

Glad to see the Wii U doing well. Will likely be buying one when the recently announced Zelda releases.

As far as the next-gen consoles go, June will be much more interesting with the $399 sku for the Xbox One being a part of the mix.

I didn't for a second expect Gamespot writers to mention something so obvious though. They only make excuses and apologies for Sony these days.

Ugh...the only thing worse than Sony lovers and apologists might be Gamespot lovers and apologists.

IGN and other sites had no problem stating the obvious. Must be a better pay grade over there.

People should stop seeing conspiracies everywhere because a certain thing about their favorite console wasn't mentioned.

Next thing you know they will deny that the 360 had an issue with the RRD and say the failure rate was below 2%. Or admit Sony has a better product overall. And will gladly take last gen or less than last gen graphics and accept it wroth open arms. Until M$ quits treating people like they are retarded I for one am done with them.
