PS4 Update 3.15 Coming Soon, Improves System Performance

But don't expect new features.

A new PlayStation 4 system update will be released later today, January 13, but it doesn't add new features or functionality. Instead, this update--3.15--is described as "minor" and is focused on improving system performance.

Sony didn't say, however, what specific areas of system performance are improved with this update.

The last major PS4 update, 3.0, arrived at the end of September 2015. It added a host of new features, and also increased the amount of online storage for PS Plus members to 10 GB.

For comparison, Microsoft's Xbox One got its latest major update, the New Xbox One Experience, in November 2015.

Both Microsoft and Sony have not historically released major system updates for their platforms in December and January. That's in part because millions of new consoles are being switched on for the first time during the holiday period and the platform-holders would rather focus on system stability.

The next major Xbox One update is coming in February, while Sony has not announced when that will happen for PS4.

So basically, this update is Sony giving the PS4 steroids instead of the usual stability. Good to see the PS4 has reached a normalized point in its short life.

I have a feeling that they do these updates after so many game releases at a time as it causes some kind of problem.

I would rather they were just honest, at least we know they are top of fixing the holes in their software after a hack.. ;-)

Saying that... I would really like a major update some time, a new look and a few new features would be nice :-)

Far better than Xone UI...

I keep turning on my Xone almost every week with hope that its better. As soon as I see the homescreen and that Sponsered Add... I say "Nope, still sucks" and shut it down... its so dusty right now its not even funny. Makes a good surface to put all my controllers on I guess...

P.S

Does MS buy back used "Working" Xbox Ones??? It's time I give them garbage and take their money!!!

Sony - PS4 system software update 3.15 is coming tonight – it’s a minor update designed to improve system performance.

Real reason - To patch the homebrew exploit which was found a few weeks back, like they use to do back in the PSP days with their so called "improve system performance" update. To improve system performance is the usual BS Sony says, bet nothing will be improved.

Well, the OS didn't need any system performance, it's fast already, so I'm assuming it's "in-game" performance. But as to whether it will make a difference on existing games, is the question. It's probably something that will mostly benefit future development.

We are just over two years into this console generation, and I have already noticed a bit of stuttering and sluggishness with the PS Store. It isn't too terribly bad, but it was noticeable. I don't know if this is going to become the norm, or if there was some other "anomaly" that was causing this. I'd be curious to hear from others if they have noticed this as well.

I just recall how painful it is now to go to the PS Store on my PS3 at this point...and will be curious to see if this starts happening on the PS4 as well. Maybe I can cross my fingers and hope that this update fixes the stuttering I saw.

Sony should have done what the Wii U and the Xbox One did, and (purposefully?) release their console with an un-optimized UI, so they could later boast about how awesome their updates are to improve the speed/responsiveness of the UI. ROFL

@pling2k: Yeah, I don't think many people are aware of the corporate games these manufactures play. MS is the worse with it. Release a completely featureless OS, with underperforming software drivers, and boast about how "they listen to feedback." LOL It's getting out of hand these days. Even big time developers do it now. Feigning for appreciation and applauds.

I'm okay with the features they have now. The only feature I would really want is external HD support and even then I'm good at micromanaging as I typically try to focus only on 3-4 games at once across 4 platforms (vita, ps3, ps4, PC).

@129260: really? its very simple and made perfect sense. Lets say you want to play a certain game, that game is on the HDD that is not installed on the PS4. So now you have to switch the HDD with the one that has that game. But now you want to play a different game that is on the other HDD that you just removed; now you have to go and swap the HDD again.
Many dont want to go through that and just want to play without going through the hassle of swapping out HDD

@freedom01: you don't swap hdd to play different games. Not sure what your thoughts are here. You buy a 2TB laptop hard drive, use the backup utility to back everything up on the 500GB ps4, install new hard drive, restore backup. Install a huge ton of games. Done. See here:

https://support.us.playstation.com/articles/en_US/KC_Article/Upgrade-PS4-HDD/

If anything on Xbox one you would swap hdd because you swap the external drive if it wasn't big enough. Or connect multiple external hdd.

@129260: I already know how to upgrade the HDD, and I already have a 2TB HDD installed in my PS4. And its already down to 300GB. 2TB is not a lot and will easily fill up very fast. That is why many want an external HDD support, because we do not want to delete the games installed due to reasons such as not wanting to re-download the games, possibility of slow internet so re-downloading will take very long, re-downloading updates/DLC is a hassle, etc. And I already mentioned this twice above, we do not want to keep on swapping HDD, when we want to play a game that is on the HDD that was removed.

@freedom01: 2TB is not a lot? Really? How many games dk you have on there? I have almost 40 games installed and still have a ton of space. Why do you need 100+ games installed all at once?
