PS4 Update 3.15 Coming Soon, Improves System Performance

But don't expect new features.

A new PlayStation 4 system update will be released later today, January 13, but it doesn't add new features or functionality. Instead, this update--3.15--is described as "minor" and is focused on improving system performance.

Sony didn't say, however, what specific areas of system performance are improved with this update.

The last major PS4 update, 3.0, arrived at the end of September 2015. It added a host of new features, and also increased the amount of online storage for PS Plus members to 10 GB.

For comparison, Microsoft's Xbox One got its latest major update, the New Xbox One Experience, in November 2015.

Both Microsoft and Sony have not historically released major system updates for their platforms in December and January. That's in part because millions of new consoles are being switched on for the first time during the holiday period and the platform-holders would rather focus on system stability.

The next major Xbox One update is coming in February, while Sony has not announced when that will happen for PS4.

They need to update the UI. It sucks compared to the Xbox one.

@Pr0ving4Gr0undz: I like it the way it is. Cross media bar on ps3 was great as well. Hate the Xbox interface.

@Pr0ving4Gr0undz: try to play your mp3 music while playing a game, web browsing or content uploading, and tell me which ui is better... oh sorry, you can't do that with the winbox.

@pchan_: Although that feature would have been nice to have on the xbox, I do not really miss it that much and I hardly used it on the ps4. It will eventually come to xbox one anyways.

@pchan_: Well, to be fair, you can do two of those things on the Xbox. I have both consoles. I can pop out of a game and it minimizes to a live tile and I can open IE to show my wife a video I seen earlier that day etc. and then pop back into the game. I can also play a game while downloading/ uploading. It just depends on whether the game I'm playing relies on network. It will pause it's up/ download if multiplaying so that you're not lagging out. In-game music is coming later and FYI, yo uwere able to do background music as far back as the Xbox Original, as well as the 360, but developers were able to chose whether or not they wanted to support that capability for their title. For instance, you couldn't do it in Halo, but you could for Project Gotham racing.

...and it's not exactly your everyday Windows. It runs 2 main OS's, in order to do this multitasking you speak of. A general OS, and gaming OS. The 3rd OS is to act as an interpreter. It's actually a HyperVisor OS, which formerly you only seen used in the corporate/ IT environment, but could benefit all home PC's. L

@kopesettik: i mean ALL of that at the same time, i know any broadband dies at one point but its an interesting way to push the systems to the limits. And also i have both consoles and I can tell there's no IE in XB but I understand you mean Edge. Being user since 360, i was expecting a little more out of the box one, but metro looks and feels unpolished in comparison with xmb

me and my friend actually tested performance of both consoles about 2 months ago, he bought over his tv and I turn on both my xb1 and ps4 next to each other and tested out 2 games. we tested just cause and fallout and in the short of it the ps4 did better on loading times and frame drops when we caused destruction.

on average for fallout load screens (from a fast travel to diamond city from sanctuary) the ps4 was about one loading screen message better (done 3 times on a hard reset of the game) and we created a mine field with (25 mines) and in general the ps4 went back to normal frame-rate a little quicker. we also did loading into the game and the ps4 was a lot faster (tho it could be the hard-drive not being full and probably generally quicker)

just cause was again a chain explosions of cars this time and really, we couldn't tell the difference (as they both dropped a bit came back to normal) , but ps4 loading times were a lot better after 1 hour of game-play, the xb1 seems to keep getting longer the more you play.

now of course we based this off what we saw and didn't have a fps software to check frame rates and a simple stop-watch for load times but all in all the ps4 was better overall.

@neowarrior793: I personally think it is irrelevant (as a ps4 player who invested in a faster hard drive because i like faster loading speeds). One should choose the platform that your friends are on and what exclusives you want to play. But it is a fact that ps4 is just a more powerful system.

Sure isn't going to do much outside of tweaks that we won't notice.

If you want to fix something allow us some customisation on the home screen. That is ALL I want right now. Having all your games in one linear line is terrible. Give a grid option and give us the option to hide the stupid apps that I will NEVER use. PS Video, Playroom they just makes an already terrible interface more cluttered.

@Dannystaples14: Yeah, the ability to delete/hide those "bloatware" apps would be a great feature...

[I don't really mind the single line, as I rarely play more than 1-2 games in any short period...]

I'm hoping that you didn't just skip to the end of the article or that this is just to fan console war flames.

@TacoTuesdays: That's completely false and if you owned one you would know that. There has been a marked improvement as well as the addition of various apps.
