PS4/Xbox One Sales to Reach 50-51 Million Units By End of 2015, EA Exec Predicts

"Clearly, consoles have sold faster than everyone expected."

The PlayStation 4 and Xbox One combined userbase is on pace to reach about 50-51 million units worldwide by the end of the calendar year. That's according to Electronic Arts CFO Blake Jorgensen, who gave his take on the current console landscape during the UBS Global Technology Conference this week.

No Caption Provided

"Clearly, consoles have sold faster than everyone expected," he said. "We're ahead of the previous cycle in terms of the pace. We're on track to see, industry-wide, about 50-51 million units by calendar year end. And typically, most of the consoles are sold in the last quarter of the year because a lot of it is around gift-giving."

With more than 29.4 million units shipped worldwide, the PS4 is the global sales leader, though the console was outsold by the Xbox One in the US during October 2015. For its part, Microsoft does not plan to announce Xbox One console shipment numbers going forward.

What may help the PS4 and Xbox One sell especially well this holiday are console-software bundles, Jorgensen said. Microsoft has more than a dozen Xbox One bundles available, featuring games like Fallout 4, Rise of the Tomb Raider, and Halo 5: Guardians, while Sony has the Uncharted: Nathan Drake Collection and Star Wars Battlefront PS4 bundles, among others. These bundles are sold for $350, the going rate for a standard system, which means, "from a consumer perspective, it's a great buy," Jorgensen said.

Jorgensen was also asked if the PS4 and Xbox One may see price cuts in 2016, but he didn't have anything to share on that front. However, the executive said future console sales growth may be led by even more game-bundling and interest in consoles with more storage space.

"I think software makers are just now starting to truly harness the power [of PS4 and Xbox One]"-- Jorgensen

He also stressed that the current-generation console cycle still has plenty of room to grow and is nowhere near the peak. By comparison, the PS3 and Xbox 360 alone combined for more than 160 million global console sales. This doesn't count the Wii's 100 million-plus sales.

Also during his presentation, Jorgensen said PS4 and Xbox One games this holiday are more attractive than ever, as developers are now leveraging more power out of each box than ever before.

"The power of the new consoles is fantastic," he said. "I think software makers are just now starting to truly harness the power. The first year, you had people testing and pushing, but now I think you're starting to see, particuarly this fall and winter, a lot really exciting pieces of software in the industry that are taking the processing power of the console."

Jorgensen also shared some insights into EA's business performance. He said attach rate (how many games are sold with new systems) for current-generation consoles is roughly in line with the previous generation. The major difference, however, is DLC and add-on content sales for EA games has jumped by a major margin over titles for previous-generation systems.

He also said EA full-game downloads made up 20 percent of all PS4 and Xbox One game sales during the company's most recent quarter, which compares to a peak percentage of 5 percent for last-gen systems. He added that EA expects the PS4 and Xbox One full-game download percentage to rise to 40 percent over the next 3-4 years.

In addition, Jorgensen shared that margins for EA digital games are almost 2X the margins for physical games, though he stressed that EA continues to maintain healthy relationships with physical retailers like GameStop, Walmart, and Target.

Yeah that may be the reason for all the 720p/900p 30fps stuttering lagfests.

@silversix_: LOL 10 million! It was 10 million last November 2014 so you think the XB1 hasn't sold a single unit in the last 12 months!!!

So how do you explain last months NPD where by XB1 outsold the ps4 or is that just made up?

I just hope that the Wii U and Xbox One continue to sell decently, or gaming consumers will see much less for their money...Sony is playing nice, like most companies, due to competition. Like any company with a monopoly, you won't see the freebies anymore and pay through your nose.

cheers,

I see the PS4 selling another 5 or 6 mil for the holidays while the Xbox will sell another 2 or 3...possibly 4 thanks to Halo so 50 mil total sounds about right

to point out that Microsoft's console is not doing as bad as people think they are, one could argue that it is doing very well at this time. Sony has the lead no doubt but mainly because of X1 blunders at E3 only to see son follow the road of rules that Microsoft had in place.

I was so impressed with my ps4 and xbone I went and bought an i7 6700k and a gtx970. 60fps was worth the price alone. (Thanks CDPR for making the decision for me with the 20fps I got in Witcher3 on ps4)

"margins for EA digital games are almost 2X the margins for physical games" But of course, those digital games cost the same or even more than the physical ones and you can't trade them.

@viewjet: I would be good with that number as long as X1 still releases a decent version of Gears 4 with Horde match and a great version of Crackdown...Sony can have the lead, for they were clever from the start and finally came out with juicier hardware. And to those turning back to their PC's, I have both consoles, but have been using my PC more this generation of consoles compared to the last.

cheers,

Sony and Microsoft are selling consoles like hotcakes because, unlike last gen, there's not a Wii equivalent this time. That's the truth (at least in part).

@StonerDemon: Disagree...my mother and grandfather bought Wiis. They would never purchase a normal console. The Wii managed to get a huge number of casual, and I mean very casual, gamers.

@StonerDemon: You think people could still own only a Wii as their main platform? I have my doubts. I wouldn't resist without a PS4/Xbox One/PC on the side ...

The 'power' statement is clearly not accurate. However, something I'm pleased is also not accurate 'the console market is dead, it's all mobile now' LONG LIVE CONSOLES! (just make them a little more powerful next time, please)

As some one who works at a gaming Store ( won't say company) we have been selling XB1's to PS4's at a 10 to 1 ratio the last few months and this month so far. It may be just my area of course but people all the sudden are wanting XB1's and we are struggling to stay in stock.

Lol. Pot, meet kettle. You make this too easy.

"All I stated was a observation in one of many places that sells gaming hardware. No where did I indicate what I am seeing here is a reflection of the entire gaming market."

So basically it was all irrelevant (and most likely BS). What a surprise.

I think the more interesting figures are these:

Game attachment is the same, but DLC is up

Digital is up from 5% to 20%

Digital has DOUBLE the margins as physical

All three of these show the shift to digital. I have been digital whenever I can, and now don't have a single disk. I think it has even worth the cost of no trade ins, and in glad to see others following. Digital is so much better for devs too, double margins and no used games floating around.

@tallestjon95: "Double the margin" is not beneficial to the consumer. It's not even really beneficial to the majority of employees. Some developers can capitalize on it, but generally only the CEO, CFO and a few other corporate bigwigs at a publisher really benefit from it.

Your digital games can't be sold, meaning you have no residual value. See eBay for values on out of print games. Digital games tend not to fall in price over time, which isn't as good for game developers as you might think. People only have so much money to spend on gaming. Sometimes picking up a used copy or a discount copy gets people interested in a franchise they wouldn't have otherwise made financial room to afford. This gets them buying more games and eventually into more franchises in the future. Living only for profits today does typically translate into a long term strategy for continued success.

@tallestjon95: I agree with everything you say apart from its worth the trade off. Why not make digital titles slightly cheaper? If its double the margin and no used games....Surely it makes sense to reward the gamer? No?

@alexhammersley: if everything was digital the starting price would probably be $50 instead of $60, but GameStop won't let that happen.

Physical won't go away completely, but cutting out the middle man with GameStop, Walmart, Target, etc creates a better market and a better product.

I except to start seeing "Digital Only" deals, like what we have with preorder bonuses. That or if you buy digital you get the DLC for free. I also expect that at the very end of this generation digital sales will be more than physical.

And they say consoles are dying. Not gonna happen. As long as there's demanding for consoles, they will continue to be supported, no matter what.
