PS5 Backwards Compatibility: Sony Boss Says 99% Of PS4 Games Will Work

The PS5 will be able to run the vast majority of PS4 games, according to Sony Interactive Entertainment president Jim Ryan.

Following the PS5 showcase event, we finally know the price and release date of the PlayStation 5. The system will launch on November 12 in a handful of major regions alongside a modest lineup of new games. However, you'll be able to play various PlayStation 4 games on the system at launch, and it sounds like the PlayStation 5's backwards compatibility capabilities will run deeper than we initially thought.

In an interview with The Washington Post, Sony Interactive Entertainment president and CEO Jim Ryan said that backwards compatibility has been tested with "thousands" of games, and that most of them work. In fact, the figure he gives is "99 percent," meaning that it will be rare for a PS4 game to not work on Sony's new console.

Sony initially confirmed that the PS5 will be able to run most of the "top 100" PS4 games, but later said that the system will support an "overwhelming majority" of PS4 games. 99% is certainly an overwhelming majority. This will extend to both digital and physical releases.

Unfortunately, Sony has confirmed that the PS5 will not be able to run games from the PS1, PS2, or PS3--so only games from those consoles that later received PS4 ports will work on the new system. It's also not clear what the 1% of games that won't work on the system is comprised of, which means that there might be an element of trial-and-error for new system owners in figuring out if all their games will carry over.

It's a different approach from that of Microsoft with the Xbox Series X. That console supports all Xbox One games that don't use Kinect, as well as any previous generations of Xbox games that were already backward compatible on Xbox One. The Xbox One didn't start off with backward compatibility but added it via a software update midway through the console's lifespan. It then began offering free Xbox 360 and Xbox games each month in the Games With Gold program.

Ryan also told The Washington Post that he expects the PS4's life span to continue for another "three or four years," and that the system will continue to be supported. "Many will transition to PS5, we hope if we do our job well, but tens of millions will still be engaged with the PS4," Ryan said.

Sony has also announced the PS Plus exclusive Plus Collection, which gives subscribers on PS5 access to a back catalog of some of the PS4's best first-party games, including Bloodborne, God of War, Uncharted 4, and more. Some of the included titles are from third-party companies as well, but these do tend to be a little older, such as Mortal Kombat X, which was included over of the newer Mortal Kombat 11.

If you're looking to secure a preorder of the new Sony console, consider consulting our PS5 preorder guide. Stock is coming in and out of most major retailers, so you'll have to keep a keen eye out if you're interested in trying the new system as soon as it launches. The company has apologized for how it handled initial preorder waves. Retailers are going to be receiving more over the next few days. There will also be other opportunities to buy the system before the end of 2020.

Yeah but not at launch. sony cant even get the top 100 most played ps4 games ready for launch. It’ll take sony years to get all those games to run on ps5.

And there not going to get enhancements like what Xbox games will get. The vast majority will be straight ports lol.

Xbox is going to have thousands of games all playable at launch with numerous enhancements.

There’s no comparison. Xbox wipes the floor with playstation in this regard.

And where’s the ps1,2 and 3 games? Oh that’s right sony cant bring them to there new console. NOT GOOD ENOUGH.

In all actuality Imo both Xbone X series and PS5 are going to do fine both have their weakness and strengths. One thing I do like about the cheaper version of PS 5 it is discless and have most of the other PS5 options if I am correct. I would have loved if Xbone X-S was done the same but I have no interest in it only the Xbox X Series. I plan on getting both the PS5 and the Xbox X series but not too quick though for I try not to buy 1st generation devices and let others test the devices first.

@lonewolf1044: It's not just "Discless" Dude..

If it were it would be a deal. But it's similar to teh Xbox cheaper version and has different lesser then hardware..

*I don't see why any gamer would want discless..

Why handicap yourself on prupose?

You eliminate any game on sale at any store.

Or a relative tradng with ya or anything similar..

*We aren't so in the future that retail/physical doesn't matter..

But by all means..

@waelse1: Ryan said they tested "thousands" of games and 99% of them worked, so it sounds like they're talking in the present...but it's still not the clearest answer.

@Barighm: It's PR speak.

Does anyone ANYONE thnk they would not word something better if it meant something better..

Fact, the PS5 isn't Backweeards Compatable with the PS4.

They are doing it per game. or else it would be 100%.

or Sony would explain it more clearly..

**Shame that we can't asume/trust anything they say..

*Im on the side of gamers 99%

Sony thinking everyone is too fanboy to care.

*BackwardsCompat & Physical disc are a huge deal & they know it.

If Sony can have a generic verison then why not a uber edition that has atleast emulator for PS3 + PS2/PS1.... i barely care as much about PS4 titles because they will be on the store or whatever.

Prob cause there we're alot more titles i'd return to on PS3 then PS4.

@Barighm: All ican say is i don't believe it.

And im not wanting to be ur enemy Brighm.

*i am all for digital. esp when im home & dont want to drive or blahblah.

But until they make them always available like When i can play Killzone2 or Infamous2 on the PS6 then Digital is a problem.

*How many digital games do people own on PS3,,PS4 that wont get carried over>?

*I must have 500 games digital between Xbox360+One, Ps3/PS4.

i know most of those wont be available..

~Side note,,,i bought a original BackwardsCompat Original fatModel PS3 and after i signed in i saw the 100's of games i had on digital.

Be it from Sales or PlaystationPlus or whatever. The list was soo long that i didn't even scroll through em all..

So many i had forgotten about because they weren't even showing up on PS4 store or that i even owned them..

@sippio: Well, the fact of the matter is Xbox didn't really care about BC and was just like everyone else saying it wasn't a very popular feature until they got their butts kicked this gen. Then they began touting it like it's the most amazing thing ever. Not because they really felt it was important, but because it was an angle nobody else had.

You can say Sony doesn't care or they're ignoring gamers or whatever you want, fine, that's fair, but let's not pretend that the collective moaning of a tiny majority of the market is somehow representative of the market at large contradictory to market data collected by the Big 3. I can accept there is MODERATE demand at most for BC, but let's not pretend it's this crazy huge thing. It's not. Even I thought it was this great thing once upon a time, but games created these days almost always make it to Steam or GoG or whatever eventually, so it's just not as important anymore.

Well I don't get consoles on release day. I'll just wait until a quick Google search tells me what games will be compatible because I wouldn't be suprised if it's more than they say. And I tend to play a lot of unheard of titles so I'm gonna remain cautious for now.

I don't know. This ball park figure of approximately 1 % of PS4 games not working on the PS5 is giving some discomfort until we know which titles they are talking about. I can't believe it's any of those AAA titles released over the years, but it could be some of those which are not PS4 Pro-enhanced. Or some obscure game that is part of a very small niche market. I do find it questionable that backwards compatibility is a possible issue with every new iteration of a PS console, but at the same time the changes in hardware are so significant it's quite simply impossible to cover all bases. Coming from a PC gaming background, the issues with backwards compatibility have always been a complete joy (not!) when upgrading to newer Windows versions. Most games might be able to install and run in Windows compatibility mode, but unfortunately there have been exceptions. So to those of us who've dabbled with this before, we know all too well about the risks of seeing a game not willing to run on a specific platform. But I assume some people will perform a "jail break" on their PS5 systems to install software emulators that can run the old PS1/PS2/PS3 games alongside PS4 and PS5. If Microsoft can make their new console completely or almost entirely backwards compatible, I'm pretty certain Sony could do it too. Just a bit disappointing it probably will be done be a third party, which will most likely be deemed a system hack. But if you have authentic copies of the games and not pirated ones, I'm all for someone doing Sony's job for them. As long as the system is not compromised in any way.... I think I would be more comfortable with a third party outfit officially co-operating with Sony to create that extra backwards compatibility.

@pcps4xb: Would you have enjoyed PS5 more if it we're PS2 AND/OR PS3 BackwardsCompat?? i know i would love to not have to keep my Fat PS3 on my gaming shelf.

Same with the Xbox360.. HDMI hub solves that problem.

But PowerSupply is and tv stand space are the main issues..

Ok. He said that most of PS4 games work on PS5, but how do we get access to those games? For example God of War. I bought it on PS Store, so do I just need to download it again? What about physical copies of the games? Do we just need to insert the game?

I ask this because they haven't made anything clear about backwards compatibility. The only thing I know is that if I want to play PS4 games I need to pay PS Plus Collection.

@hagane_elric: This is why They(esp Sony) are so slippery & why poeple are worried.

They know Sony isn't saying how it works in concrete because they are stalling for the probably PR timing..

*No matter what we the gamer consumer are getting hosed with BackwardsCompat..

**Fo rme it's space & power & HDMI..

I don't want a HDMI hub but that's petty..

Mainly i can't keep em all plugged in on even my uber power Surge.

If i we're to turn on the AC in summe rin the ManCave= that breaker flips with the quickness..

**Lastly, there's the clutter.. i did get a PS3 that was backward so that eliminates PS2 +PS1.

@gts-r288: This happened with the Xbox360.

I played KOTOR2 via original disc and ALL the WORDS/conversation responses we're a weird number/symbol code instead of words..

I checked it a year later and it was the same & i never went back..

Not 1 single person at Obsidian or Xbox bothered to play KOTOR2 after it was made BC! This is neyond rude & arrogant.. Yet many we're involved with the PR of announcing it's availability...

*It was the very 1st conversation you have in game with a NPC(Kreya).

@fud_sang: Niche games that are doing strange things, probably. Possibly games using some special accessories.

On Xbox Series S/X there will also be games that won't work - in particular, some Kinect games. Most of these use Kinect as an add-on, but for some it's a mandatory requirement. Eg. Fantasia: Music Evolved. I also suspect that some other games won't function for the same reason, like Zumba Fitness and Xbox fitness.

Could be the same for PS5.

@pharoe777: Ps5 will do BC in multiple ways. The popular title's (thousands being tested) will use Ps5's high frequency and have benefits such as higher resolution and framrates. Other games will use legacy modes. If games have Pro versions l, the ps5 will match the PS4 Pro's frequency and for regular PS4 games with no pro enhancements, the ps5 will match the frequency of regular PS4.

@pcps4xb: You're contradicting yourself: if the enhancements are an extra benefit only for the plus subscribers they are indeed locked in, there's no technical reason why the disc games couldn't be enhanced too.

Also, Bloodborne doesn't have a Pro version, but I hope the PS5 could make it run at 60 fps, it would be a huge wasted opportunity if they didn't.

P.S. Digital Foundry has shown that BB can run at 60 fps on the PS4 Pro itself if you lower the resolution to 720p, so there's should be no problem to make it run at 60fps on the PS5.

my only guess is they don't think it would sell more hardware, plus it's going to cost more manpower to test each game and fine tune the emulator.

@thomaswmak: Older systems break down. PS1, PS2, Gamecube, and Wii had disc drives that can fail over time. As for emulation, just do what Valve's doing. I'm mean, there's an emulator front end being sold on Steam and the developers themselves are working on it and even offer support for physical discs. Of course, if Sony doesn't want to chase this market, they can just make legal emulation on PC easier by releasing discontinued system bios and firmware into the public domain so the PS1, PS2, PS3, PSP, and PSVita won't have that hurdle.

@Jinzo_111887: I'm honestly surprised they don't do that. Heck, they could even make official software and then sell official ISOs. I'm sure it would be a heck of a lot less costly than remastering every single game one at a time.

That said, Japan has some weird copyright laws that could be mucking up the works.

Well, this is great news. I'm sure that anyone who has built up a PS4 library will be pleased to know they can play those games on PS5. Hopefully they will also support better resolutions and framerates. As for PS3, PS2 and PS1 titles, Sony have never mentioned them in relation to PS5, so I don't know why people would expect them. Would it be nice to play my PS3 games on PS5? Sure. But I don't expect it to happen.
