PS5 Backwards Compatibility: Sony Boss Says 99% Of PS4 Games Will Work

The PS5 will be able to run the vast majority of PS4 games, according to Sony Interactive Entertainment president Jim Ryan.

Following the PS5 showcase event, we finally know the price and release date of the PlayStation 5. The system will launch on November 12 in a handful of major regions alongside a modest lineup of new games. However, you'll be able to play various PlayStation 4 games on the system at launch, and it sounds like the PlayStation 5's backwards compatibility capabilities will run deeper than we initially thought.

In an interview with The Washington Post, Sony Interactive Entertainment president and CEO Jim Ryan said that backwards compatibility has been tested with "thousands" of games, and that most of them work. In fact, the figure he gives is "99 percent," meaning that it will be rare for a PS4 game to not work on Sony's new console.

Sony initially confirmed that the PS5 will be able to run most of the "top 100" PS4 games, but later said that the system will support an "overwhelming majority" of PS4 games. 99% is certainly an overwhelming majority. This will extend to both digital and physical releases.

Unfortunately, Sony has confirmed that the PS5 will not be able to run games from the PS1, PS2, or PS3--so only games from those consoles that later received PS4 ports will work on the new system. It's also not clear what the 1% of games that won't work on the system is comprised of, which means that there might be an element of trial-and-error for new system owners in figuring out if all their games will carry over.

It's a different approach from that of Microsoft with the Xbox Series X. That console supports all Xbox One games that don't use Kinect, as well as any previous generations of Xbox games that were already backward compatible on Xbox One. The Xbox One didn't start off with backward compatibility but added it via a software update midway through the console's lifespan. It then began offering free Xbox 360 and Xbox games each month in the Games With Gold program.

Ryan also told The Washington Post that he expects the PS4's life span to continue for another "three or four years," and that the system will continue to be supported. "Many will transition to PS5, we hope if we do our job well, but tens of millions will still be engaged with the PS4," Ryan said.

Sony has also announced the PS Plus exclusive Plus Collection, which gives subscribers on PS5 access to a back catalog of some of the PS4's best first-party games, including Bloodborne, God of War, Uncharted 4, and more. Some of the included titles are from third-party companies as well, but these do tend to be a little older, such as Mortal Kombat X, which was included over of the newer Mortal Kombat 11.

If you're looking to secure a preorder of the new Sony console, consider consulting our PS5 preorder guide. Stock is coming in and out of most major retailers, so you'll have to keep a keen eye out if you're interested in trying the new system as soon as it launches. The company has apologized for how it handled initial preorder waves. Retailers are going to be receiving more over the next few days. There will also be other opportunities to buy the system before the end of 2020.

It might be some games that need a special accessory that could be problematic. Skylanders, Lego Dimensions, and Disney Infinity are a few that come to mind. PlayStation VR games might also be among those that don't work.

Yeah, I had the same thought yesterday. The lineup of BC games at launch will be thin because Sony hasn't developed the technology properly yet. But I'm sure they'll keep working on it until eventually pretty much any PS4 game will run on the PS5. It might take a while but basically the only way how it would not turn out that way is if they completely abandoned the idea at some point. And I don't see why they would do that as they can keep selling those PS4 games to PS5 owners for years to come. All PS4 games ever released are all available on the PSN store after all.

@Atzenkiller: Ps5 will do BC in multiple ways. The popular title's (thousands being tested) will use Ps5's high frequency and have benefits such as higher resolution and framrates. Other games will use legacy modes. If games have Pro versions l, the ps5 will match the PS4 Pro's frequency and for regular PS4 games with no pro enhancements, the ps5 will match the frequency of regular PS4. There's no design change necessary. the Ps5 is built to play the library, let's not let our speculation ahead of ourselves considering they've detailed how it will work in March.

@Atzenkiller: PS5 is basically a much faster PS4, so there isn't much need to develop anything to have PS4 games running.

PS1/PS2/PS3 are very different beasts - to the PS4 and each other - and I never understood why people were surprised that PS5 wouldn't support those. The PS4 didn't either. Sure, Sony could develop emulators and tune it for all the games - but I guess they found out that it didn't have a good ROI.

If anything, they could use them to make Playstation Now more attractive.

@teg: And I really don't know how some people can not get this. Sony doesn't need to create an emulator for PS1 and 2 games because they've done so many years ago already. And hobby programmers have done a much better job at it in their free time, without all the knowhow about the tech that Sony's tech guys have. And as has been confirmed a long time ago the PS4 already has a PS3 emulator built in. So it's not even like it would have been a big deal for Sony to tweak it a little more and then make it work flawlessly on hardware that's 2 generations ahead. It's always just about it not being worth doing because rereleasing old games has become a very profitable business. There is zero point for Sony to offer you the option to play your old game copies. And rereleasing those old games doesn't take much effort already for the reasons I mentioned. Those PS1 rerelease of games like FF7-9 are already just running on an emulator. It takes pretty much zero effort to do this so they only have to focus on prettying up the graphics a bit. And assuming that the PS3 emulator they have is not quite perfect yet that just means that the devs would have to put a bit more work into making the game run properly on the new hardware. Instead of just letting it run off the emulator without requiring zero effort on their side. But it's not like they'd have to completely port those games over, which usually takes much more effort.

"Unfortunately, there's still not indication that the PS5 will run games from the PS3, PS2, or PS1."

Call me crazy but the lack of indication tells me that games from those generations won't be running on PS5. Feel like they would have said something about it at this point. Maybe a future update is possible, similar to Xbox One's BC, but I wouldn't get my hopes up at this point

@sparent180: What exactly are you even thinking of? That they'll let you play any PS1 games by using your old discs? That is never going to happen anyway. All you can hope for is that companies release their old games on the PSN store again. Which they've already been doing for many years so there's no need for BC in that regard. Same as you won't be able to play PS3 games you've bought in the past on the PS5. At best if they were to add BC for all PS3 games then you might be able to play any that you bought on the PSN. But I don't see that happening as it's not profitable for Sony. What they can do is to refine the PS3 emulator that they have already developed for the PS4 to make it easier for developers to rerelease any PS3 games. That's all that you can hope for as Sony is not going to let you play your old game copies on the latest console. There's no profit in that and MS has been doing that purely as a marketing move.

@Atzenkiller: I wasn't expecting it at all. Im more wondering why other people are waiting for an official answer from Sony. My point is if Sony hasn't said one thing about PS2 or any other generations, besides PS4, why would people think those games might be playable?

"That they'll let you play any PS1 games by using your old discs?"

And that's the other part of it. Even if the PS5 did have BC with PS3, PS2, PS1 it wouldn't be every single game, just like BC on Xbox. That might even be a reason why Sony doesn't do BC. They probably don't want to deal with he licensing and determining which games can be playable.

@sparent180: Real BC never caused any problems with licensing. Why would it? It just allows you to play your old game copies. All PS2 and 1 games were playable on the PS2 and 3. There were no restrictions based on lisenses and whatever else.

Licenses only come into play when you rerelease a game. Which is what all those remasters are and generally any game that you put up for sale in stores again. It's a new release. That's why licensing matters again.

So Sony has nothing to do with that. It's the choice of any publisher if they want to rerelease a game or not. And there are already emulators built into the consoles that can emulate those games, so the devs usually just have to focus on whatever improvements they want to make rather than on creating a port. Emulators have been around for a very long time and you could play PS1 games on them about 2 decades ago. It's not like there was any difficulty whatsoever in making it happen on modern consoles. It's just a matter of: is it worth doing or are we making more money by selling remastered versions?

@sparent180: Why would they? As far as I know MS so far has worked specifically on each game individually to make it run on the Xbone. So that's a different thing. But building real BC into a console is really no different from just buying an old console and playing your games on it. You can do that at any time and no publisher can stop you. Only when you rerelease those games for new consoles, then licensing and whatever becomes relevant again. But rereleasing games is something that publishers do anyway, not console manufacturers.

@sparent180: Nobody ever said they would, this is just GS trying to earn more clicks.

That said, there is no reason why they can't have PS1 and 2 support. This isn't a case of them being unable to do it (like with the PS3). They have the technology. It was in the PS3 and the PS4. They just won't for some reason.

Probably has something to do with how copyright works in Japan.

@deth420: They want to and they've already been doing it for many years now. They will never offer you to play your old game discs. That kind of BC died with the PS3. Back then it was still something they did to make more sales. Nowadays they make a lot more money by reselling you those old games at higher prices. So there's zero reason for them to add proper BC again.

@sparent180: It's a very niche market though. The most wanted PS3 games were remastered for PS4 long ago, so they'll already be playable on the PS5, since the remasters are technically PS4 games.

That just leaves PS2 and PS1 games. Not too many are calling out for those.

@nabinator: Well, SMT3 is getting a remaster now. FFX and XII have already gotten one. There are some games that people would like to play on current consoles and most of them have already been released. But there's no value for Sony in allowing you to play your old game copies so that's not gonna happen. If you want any pre PS4 games to be available on the PS5 then you gotta ask the developers to rerelease them. Otherwise just use an emulator, which have allowed you to play any old game you want at higher resolutions and with improved graphics since the dawn of time. Nobody needs a modern console just to play really old games exactly the way they were. The only benefit of those rereleases is that they usually come with some improvements.

@gaeandilth: If that were true, then why's GOG still trying to add retro PC games to their store front? Why is Sega reselling a lot of Genesis games on Steam? Why are the Disney Afternoon, Contra, Castlevania, and Megaman game collections a thing? Why did Ty the Tasmanian Tiger 1-3 get PC ports in the last few years? Why has Resident Evil 4 been ported to a dozen different platforms spanning at least 3 console gens? Why are retro console clones a thing? Why did Atari bother releasing the Atari Vault? Why did Nintendo bother with the Virtual Console, NSO, Super Mario All Stars, Super Mario Advance, Ocarina of Time 3D, Super Mario 64 DS, Majora's Mask 3D, Twilight Princess HD, Wind Waker HD, Kirby's Super Star Ultra, Star Fox 64 3D, Super Mario 3D All Stars, and a lot of other ports of older games? Why did Square Enix Remaster Kingdom Hearts 1 after losing the source code if it's not profitable?

Let's face it, people do want to play these old games even now. If they did, this stuff would flop.

@Jinzo_111887: And what does that have to do with backwards compatibility? The old games already on ps4 and xbone. This is people wanting to play games they own on the new systems for free not profitable for anyone.

Backwards compatibility has nothing to do with what you are talking about. All those retros and remakes will be on the ps5 and xbx. This is about getting those games for free on the new systems. It is people with 100s of games in their library they want to transfer to the new systems. Why? You want to play them keep your old system.

@gaeandilth: As for keeping the old systems, that's a good idea, but there's a problem. They tend to break. Gamecube, Wii, PS1, and PS2 all have disc drive issues. SNES? Power port breaks. Game Boy? Vertical lines. That's the problem with keeping these old systems. It won't do any good if they break. At least the SNES, NES, Sega Genesis, and Game Boy have console clones on the market, but I think some people would rather buy new systems made by the official console maker over a used console or a clone.

@gaeandilth: For starters it shows there's a demand for the old games in general. Heck, there's plenty of source ports for Doom and Duke Nukem 3D. Second, by offering it built into the system, it takes away one reason to hack the system. I mean, it doesn't make sense to hack a PS3 to run a PS1 emulator to play your PS1 discs with when backwards compatibility already allows you to do that. However, maybe Sony wants people to play these old games on PC instead or hack the PS5.

@Jinzo_111887: Never said there was not a demand for old games. Hell I played most games when they released all the way back to the 70s and I still play some of those old games. But all those old games going to be on the psstore just like they are now has nothing to do with BC. BC is just about getting something for free. And it is not free for them to convert those games to work on new systems. You payed for RE2 on the ps4 not the ps5.

I am sure some games will xfer for free anyway. Some will charge a xfer fee and some will just make you pay full price again. Which sounds more then fair to me. If there is such a high demand as you say then they should charge even more.

@gaeandilth: Well, PS4 backwards compatbility does matter a lot because people do play older games. And having proper BC on the PS5 for all PS4 games means that publishers won't have to rerelease them all over again, as they have been doing so far. And I hope you're aware that pretty much any successful game ever released has been rereleased now for the PS3 and 4. So yes, people do care a lot about playing those old games, even if you don't.

@just1mohr: tons of ps1-3 games on the playstation. Just the problem that a lot of them on psnow and streaming games sucks. Xbox does have the advantage there. But that is not backwards compatible that is a subscription service. Backwards compatible is playing games you already own for free on the new systems.

@gaeandilth: One sad thing is that one can buy a decent gaming PC and a disc drive and emulate PS1 and PS2 games fairly well. Not sure if there's any USB Blu-ray drives that will work with PS3 games though. It leaves room for PC gamers to cast doubt on the hardware's power when there's not even PS1 or PS2 emulation in the PS5.
