PS5 Is Best-Selling Game Console Ever Through Five Months

This is despite the Nintendo Switch actually beating the PS5 for March.

The PS5 has often been almost impossible to find, but that hasn't stopped Sony's new system from selling a whole bunch of units--even if some were going to bots. Through five months, the PS5 is the best-selling game console in US history, both in terms of units sold as well as dollar sales.

The numbers come from the latest NPD report, which showed that compared to last year at the same point, hardware sales are up by nearly 50%. This isn't a huge surprise, given that multiple game consoles launched and this almost always brings a big surge in sales, but it's impressive that Sony has been able to accomplish this feat during a pandemic. Last year, several retailers weren't even offering the PS5 in stores--aside from online order pickup--to prevent the spread of COVID-19, but this didn't seem to be a deterrent for those who wanted the system. However, bots also played a role in buying up supplies and selling them for higher prices, and this will be much, much harder to do once stores are heavily stocking the systems again.

Now Playing: Returnal - Official "Hostiles" Gameplay Trailer

Despite continuing its record-setting pace, the PS5 actually got outsold by the Nintendo Switch in March, both in units and dollars. If you look at the best-selling game for Switch in March, that makes sense. Monster Hunter Rise shot to the top of the Switch sales chart, and it's the only non-Nintendo game on there. Given the massive popularity of Capcom's series, it wouldn't be surprising to see the Switch take the top spot in April, too.

The PS5 has a pretty steady stream of games releasing for it over the next few months, including exclusives like Returnal and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart. The one area it has, oddly, lost a little value in is sports, as MLB The Show 21 is releasing Xbox and will be available on Xbox Game Pass at launch. According to Sony, this decision came from MLB itself, as you don't have as much control over these sorts of choices when you're making a licensed game. The game supports cross-play, letting PlayStation and Xbox fans enjoy it together.

I don't know what kind of tricky math their using to state that the PS5, after 5 months, is the best selling console in American history... but you can bet that's exactly what they're doing. Tricky Math!!

there's simply no logical way this is true.

maybe their adding together sales of both the $499 blu-ray iteration with the disc-less $399 version because they're both PS5's,
maybe their outright lying.
either way, this 'aint true.

you got one of the highest price points in console history along with one of the worst game launch lineups and a worldwide pandemic restricting build components and overall availability.

no. just no.

... and before you go attacking me as an xbox fanboy, I own and regularly play my PS4.

@twelveoucer: ofcourse they're adding both digital and physical. It's the same system minus the disc drive.

@twelveoucer: How is there any issue with adding together both models? Does the disc drive version somehow count more than the other one??

The price and game lineup (which I think is pretty good) would not hold back sales at all during these first few months when hardcore fans and early adopters are going to buy up every console you make. Kinda universal thing for every console launch

@Spartan_418: I think adding together sales of both versions, if that's what's going on in order to make that sales claim, is misleading because it isn't a direct apples to apples comparison to consoles of previous gens that launched with only hardware version.

To be fair, what are the sales of the higher-end PS5, the one with the optical drive and HDD, through 5 months against sales of the PS4 or PS3 within that same time period.

@twelveoucer: You seem confused. The only hardware difference between the two PS5 models is the disc drive, neither one has an HDD, they just have SSDs of the same size.

And not sure it makes sense to call the disc drive one "higher-end" because a lot of people don't have physical movie collections and are fine with all-digital games. Kinda like how the presence of a disc drive doesn't really factor into whether a PC is considered high-end or not

@Spartan_418: ok, SSD. ... I'm sure you know what I meant... at least I did lol.

The PS5 is, for the most part, backwards compatible with PS4 games but, not every PS4 game that's b/c has a digital counterpart on the Playstation Store.
As time goes by, certain titles are removed and the ONLY way they'll remain playable is if someone owns the disc version AND the PS5 Standard Edition.
If you have the PS5 Digital Edition, well... you're outta luck.

So, there are two versions of the PS5 that not only have different 'out of the box' capabilities but, given a few years, will have a different library of games they're able to access and play, as Sony is going to continue, and more than likely ramp up, it's delisting of older, digital titles that need purged from the Store for one reason or another.

Different consoles with different hardware configurations that play different games.
... so no, counting them together isn't accurate against the sales figures of previous gens.

By the way, if you own the PS5 Digital Edition, can you download and play Cyberpunk 2077 right now like those folks that own the PS5 Standard edition are doing with their disc copies of the game?

@twelveoucer: I think you’re jumping through hurdles in denying Sony’s success and not realising that they simply had more production/assembly lines going than Microsoft. Microsoft were unprepared (yet again) in a lot of ways. They had no launch games. However, you can bet there’s a hella lot of Spider-Man fans out there. There’s other deciding factors to consider. It was the most sought after tech of the year. People were bored during Lockdown and wanted to play some Playstation. Scalpers bought dozens of them at a time. Playstation has great games. That’s what gamers like. I don’t know what math you’re doing but it’s not like the Series X has had much advertisement. That’s because they don’t have a AAA to even promote their new console with.

It's easy to be the best selling of all time when:

1) The population is at an all time high.

B) There are probably more people who posess more than one PS5 than people who own only one.

The question is, unless you're a stockholder, why should we care? And don't give me any of that, well if it sells more, developers will make more games for it and MP games will have a larger base crap. We all know this is solely about penis measuring. Like devs will stop making games for PlayStation if it's not the best selling console in a 5 month period. LOL. Let me know when the PlayStation is not the best selling console. That would at least be unusual. Especially since most numbers from MS and Nintendo are guesstimations.

@interrupting_cow: A single PS5, or any other item really, can only be counted as sold by the company once. Just because one PS5 might go through 5 hands before being used, doesn't mean Sony counts it as 5 sales.

Correction: The PS5 will be a very expensive paperweight in the future. It has the same problem that if the CMOS dies and PSN servers are inaccessible you won't be able to play physical or digital games. There you go. Is anyone going to read this or care? I don't know but people's PS5s are also ticking time bombs.

The PS5 could be a very expensive paperweight in the distant future.

Nobody seems to care.

I have a PS2 that I got in 2001. It still works fine and the CMOS is still keeping time. I know if the CMOS fails in it I will still be able to play my games.

Here's the thing though if the CMOS fails in the PS4 the console becomes an online only console and will need to be connected to the net to play games something which Microsoft were lambasted for in the past and Sony essentially did it themselves on the sly. Even if you change that CMOS you will still have to register that CMOS with Sony servers and if those servers are inactive you've a dead console. You'd have to jailbreak it somehow in order to do anything with it if that was even possible due to all Sony's so called maintenance updates disabling you from jailbreaking it. All most of those updates do is prevent you from jailbreaking the console anyway.

So the PS5 likely has as strict or maybe even stricter DRM that we don't know about yet because nobody wants to risk opening up a rarely available 500 dollar console to remove the deeply embedded CMOS battery.

So Sony was dishonest, they built these consoles with this ticking time bomb and they've ignored the problem and are not doing anything to address it. They ended up being worse types than Microsoft.

CMOS batteries can last over 20 years or it can vary wildly but I think Sony need to be held to account for this like Microsoft were. It's not acceptable that when a little battery dies your console becomes useless without connecting to their servers, that is unacceptable. Nobody seems to care or lack the attention span or something.

@quinnd6: nobody cares because its not really a problem. PC's are the same. When the CMOS battery dies all bios settings are lost and it likely won't boot let alone play games. Not that It's ever happened to me in 20 years of gaming on pc so i can't see it being a problem on playstation.

If your CMOS battery dies before either your drive, ram, cpu etc do I'd be very surprised. The battery is one of the most reliable parts in the system. And of course this is also only a problem if Sony permanently switch the servers off. And they could still release a firmware update before that happens that disables the time and date check if needed. Even if they don't do that 20 years or so down the line. Big whoop. My ps3 has been next to my tv all the time I've owned a ps4 and now ps5 but it hasn't been switched on in over 3 years. If it completely died now i wouldn't be that bothered and that "only" came out 15 years ago.

@pcps4xb: Are you trying to be sarcastic or something?

Let me simplify anyway:

Here's the thing: if the CMOS fails in the PS5 the console becomes an online only console and will need to be connected to the net to play games every time you switch it on, something which Microsoft were lambasted for in the past and Sony essentially did it themselves on the sly. If you change that CMOS battery you will still have to register that CMOS with Sony servers and if those servers are inactive you've a dead console. If it happens in 20 year's, big deal I'll have the next 2 consoles by then. If it happens this Year, I'll warranty it. If it happens in 3 years, I'll purchase another console. Just like any other issue that happens with tech.

@rodoxthedark: Well that CMOS could last 10 years either. Sony aren't interested in game preservation. Look what they did to the PS3 store. Those CMOS batteries will die shortly and people with PS3s won't be able to play downloaded games without connecting to a server or they'll get an error. It is a ticking time bomb. When the CMOS dies whenever that may be you'll have to connect it to Sony's servers. If Sony have shutdown their servers for PS5 like they're going to be shutting down PS3, vita and psp store this year well you're screwed. They will eventually to cut costs. I'm not rambling. @pcps4xb: We all know how Sony use emulator tech to force you to rebuy your old games if you want to play them on your new console. Let's say the new God of War comes out on PS7 and you want to go back and play one of the older God of war games and you have a then old PS4 lying around and you have a physical copy of the game. You decide to take it out and pop the game in and play on the original hardware you're greeted with an error screen because the CMOS is dead. You connect to the internet and the same error pops up because Sony have decided to turn off the PS4 servers. This is going to be the likely scenario unless Sony fix the problem. If I already have a game I'm not going to be shoving dollars into Sony's hands just so I can replay the same flipping exact game on a new console. I'm going to replay the God Of War games on the PS2 and know I will have no problems doing so because my PS2 still works and if the CMOS dies the system time will be inaccurate and I'll still be able to play my games. That's the way it should be on the PS4 and that's the way it should be on the PS5. So there you go.

@quinnd6: most people don't have a ps1 or ps2 and their games. Definitely not digital since it didn't exist. So those games would probably be purchased if you want to play them. They're not making me rebuy ps4 games on ps5 so you're exhagerating. If my ps5 has those issues and out of warranty, I'll purchase another PS5. That's what anyone does when system fails

Then I decided to get it fixed for my brother and it screwed up again. So maybe you unfortunately have a point there. I've done it myself in the past. I'm all for games preservation and getting the most out of your console though. I really don't think Sony are at the moment. If Sony didn't allow people to play PS4 games on PS5 they would have been screwed I reckon. People would have said screw it I'll jump to Xbox so.

@quinnd6: yeah after 2 rod, I started fixing mine and my friends 360's.

After a year a new console is out the overwhelming majority don't even go back to previous gen games let alone classic games but game preservation is still good IMO. Funny fact is XB1 games can be played on XSX but only a minor selection of 360 games are BC and the list is alot smaller for OG Xbox games. But I'm sure MS will pursue that this Gen and Sony hasn't denied anything either.

@rodoxthedark: But it's not 'in 20 years', it's way less. The PS4 was released in 2013. This means that from the end of its lifespan, the PS3 was supported for only 7 years after the next gen came out. Worse yet, the PS3 came out in 2008, it hasn't even been 20 years, it's been 12.

Imagine owning a 12 year old car and all of a sudden the manufacturer stops by and disables the car from even turning the radio on. Cause that's what's happening here.
