PS5 Passes 10 Million Units Sold, As Game Sales Stats Announced; Shortages To Continue

The PS5 is the fastest-selling PlayStation console ever, despite ongoing chip shortages.

Despite the global semiconductor shortage, Sony's PlayStation 5 has now sold more than 10 million units as of July 18. This makes it the fastest-selling PlayStation console ever over a similar period of time after launch, eclipsing the initial sales of the PS4, PS3, PS2, and every other PlayStation.

Sony made this announcement less than a day after Microsoft also announced that the Xbox Series X|S is the fastest-selling Xbox console platform in the company's history. Microsoft does not share hard sales data for its Xbox consoles, but an estimate from analyst Daniel Ahmad put Series X|S sales at 6.5 million units.

Sony also announced new sales and player data for some of its top recent games:

  • Spider-Man: Miles Morales has now sold more than 6.5 million copies.
  • MLB The Show 21 has sold more than 2 million copies on all platforms, and it's reached more than 4 million players in total.
  • Returnal has sold 560,000 copies.

Of note, MLB The Show 21's total player number is double its sales figure no doubt due to Xbox Game Pass. In a major shakeup for the series, Sony brought the game to Xbox platforms this year, and it's included on Xbox Game Pass.

As for Returnal, Sony recently announced that it acquired its developer, Housemarque, which will now make something "bigger and more ambitious" as it next game.

In a statement, SIE president Jim Ryan thanked fans for their support of PS5 so far. He also warned that demand for the PS5 continues to outpace supply, so you can expect ongoing shortages.

"I can't express enough the deep gratitude we feel for our passionate community of PlayStation fans who have embraced PS5, and the world-class development and publishing partners who bring such incredible gaming experiences to our platforms," Ryan said.

"While PS5 has reached more households faster than any of our previous consoles, we still have a lot of work ahead of us as demand for PS5 continues to outstrip supply. I want gamers to know that while we continue to face unique challenges throughout the world that affect our industry and many others, improving inventory levels remains a top priority for SIE."

Sony's global head of business operations, Veronica Rogers, said in a blog post, "We are making steady progress with available global supply and can't wait for the day when everyone who wants a PS5 can easily get one."

Rogers added: "Our commitment to supporting PlayStation's entire community, across all platforms and services, has never been stronger. So, wherever gamers are on their journey with us, we are committed to making sure that PlayStation is the best place to play."

Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart has sold over one million units since June 11, 2021.

Returnal has sold 560,000 copies since April 30, 2021

Both only on PS5 and Ratchet and Clank did it within a month

10 million PS5s and not even a million bought Returnal...maybe the developer should have listen to the feedback and add a much better save progress system....

@johnny0779: I disagree. They succeeded in just the implementation of dualsense alone.

Sony just confirmed they’re very happy with these numbers. So, I don’t know what you are getting at here - other than playing make believe game forum sales executive. _/(ツ)\_

I like the fact that it’s hard and some of us got the platinum at 1% of the player base. It separates us Chads from the average johnny….

@bloodbornelore: You clearly don't know Johnny. The guy has been proven to be wrong a million times, does nothing but haunt PS threads, and has even sunk to harassing and insulting certain people. And yet he's still here. Even Tizz eventually got banned for much less. At this point either the mods just don't care or he's an alt of one of the GS staff or something (we KNOW they like to troll us). You're better off just starving him of attention.

@johnny0779: Actually a half-million on a new-IP Indie studio game is *MASSIVE* on any platform.

For every Valheim, there are a hundred other truly excellent indies that only sell a handful.

@Pyrosa: first of all Returnal was made with Sony's money and backing which put that studio way ahead of any "indie" studio....

And your excuse of new IPs not supposed to sell well, i would recommend you see the numbers for Hades for its month.

@mediastupid1: Come on now..let's not make ignorant statements. No one knows how many Xbox Consoles have been sold, for all we know it could be higher then 10 million, especially since it seems like they're easier to get. The fact is unless Microsoft releases those numbers, people can guess all they want doesn't make it true.

@bloodbornelore: Absolutely, I mean went to get my second one the other day. This Gamestop I went to had only 3, with 5 people in line. I happened to be number 2.

The point with that is the demand for the console still seems way higher then the supply. As far as I've seen too PS5 still wasn't allowing in person console buys. Now we are counting scalpers too. So yes easily more then a million...however as I stated no one but Microsoft knows right. If they have released the total number of units sold...feel free to provide the link.

@bababooey12: Neither of us have any evidence of their terrible sales because they’re too ashamed to release those figures. So you have no clue whether they were able to sell 1 million Series X consoles. It launched without any great new games. Gamers like games. Xbox should try to identify the word “game” inside the word gamer” and try to produce a few really good titles. On the other hand, if they are able to sell over a million of them, then why release any new games at all? Especially if profits are high. That’s what I’m seeing. Whereas 5 people in a shop is nothing. It’s irrelevant.

@johnny0779: I haven’t played Returnal nor do I care to but Halo only sold 4 million units by January 2004, even though it released to a 50% attach rate on OG Xbox in 2001. Without the platforms in people’s living rooms, the games aren’t going to sell very well.

@bloodbornelore: Ignoring the first part of your statement...without the platforms in the living rooms lol...they claim to have sold over 10 million consoles. Johnny brought up a valid point 10 million sold but only what 560,000 copies of like Returnal...

Goes back to the arguement of the PS4, that games didn't move the console when ya look at number of said games sold compared to total units and it wasn't even close. Thats because people were buying the console for many reasons one being just to use it to watch movies etc.

@bababooey12: Once again, you’re ignoring Sony’s plethora of titles each and every year. I don’t care for Returnal so I don’t care how much it sells. People don’t buy home consoles just to watch movies on. A lot of the movie websites on Xbox are blocked anyway. You’re not the validator of points and opinions. Mine was accurate. Halo: CE had a 50% attach rate on the Xbox 1. But due to selling not very many consoles, the game only managed to make 4 million sales by January 2004. Even though it had released in 2001. You understand?

@bloodbornelore: lol not saying the second half of your statement wasn't accurate. I told you I wasn't going to comment on it...until you brought it up again...

You're using Halo Combat Evolved as your poor example....geez could have of maybe not sold as many as it did because it was launched alongside Microsofts first console....going against Sony and Nintendo who had been well established....hence the reason why Xbox 360 sold 84 million units...in part because of a game like Halo.

Hardly a comparison, especially since Halo Combat Evolved helped propell Xbox forward. I mean it along with Halo 2 are often times considered one of the best video games of all time.

Can the same be said about Returnal?

Sony can put out 1 million games doesn't matter if they're crap....problem with Sony people, they care more about quantity over quality... then will sit there and only name the same 5 like games over and over again.

@bababooey12: Those same five titles are from franchises you haven’t played. Because they were of a quality that far exceeded to old 360 years in which you’re nostalgic towards. They redefined the meaning of AAA last generation whilst multi-platform games stagnated. You live in a world where you the last decade has been lacklustre. You speak purely from ignorance and inexperience.

To say multiplatform games are better when in reality they’ve been nothing but lazy and tired old games. Says it all. It really does.

Last-gen quality still hasn’t begun for you yet, which is pretty amazing when you think about all of the ACTUAL AAA exclusives you’ll finally be playing soon that aren’t multi platform crap or underwhelming GaaS developed. Even then, there’s so much greatness from the last five years. Exhilarating and satisfying. A true development of the industry and where it’s headed.

Without being too harsh on the fact that the Series X launch with… well… nothing (despite Sony apparently being so foolish to skip 2019 for new game announcements, remember?), let’s recap on the year so far.

Sony’s first year has been astounding, having both Demon’s Souls Remake and Marvel’s SM: Miles Morales at Launch. A new Ratchet game released a few months ago so that’s two great games from Insomniac in quick succession, selling like hot cakes and bringing in a tonne of cash for their studios making the unconfirmed Spider-Man & Venom. Lovely stuff. Wasn’t interested in Returnal.

Sony are looking to finish up their first year with a couple redefining Indy games: Kena and Stray, which despite their low budget, each look more awesome than any Indies I have ever seen. Stray in particular, as I love cats.

And an incredible controller too!

Xbox seem to be putting all their chips into Halo: Infinite. So that looks to be a slow start but also a strong start from Microsoft nonetheless.

Nintendo seem to be sitting back and taking it easy.

Console Wars Phase 2: I expect a barrage of exclusives from each console manufacturer, no exceptions. Sony will be releasing sequels to their excellent new or rebooted franchises like Spider-Man, Horizon, GOW and Ghost. Xbox will hopefully have the new Forzas ready, as well as Starfield, Fables, Hellblade 2 and Perfect Dark. Titles I’m much more interested in than Halo. Oh, and I forgot about Scorn! I can’t wait to play Scorn. I’m more interested in Scorn than I am Horizon: FW, actually. Giger art design is just wonderful. I’ve wanted that game for more than six years now.

Nintendo will release their BOTW sequel. Then also hopefully, fingers crossed for a Super Mario Mansion that’s a spiritual successor to Mario 64.

I’m not interested in Returnal or Halo. They’re too cookie-cutter. Give me Stalker 2 or TimeSplitters 4 FFS. Even Deathloop looks like waaaay more fun that just revisiting the same gameplay of yesteryear. Change is inevitable after all.

I’m curious… just what are your top ten most anticipated games that have been announced? I’m interested in knowing because all you seem to like is old shit.

@bloodbornelore: lol nice long rant..inexperienced I've been playing games for the last roughly 25 years. Starting out with Nintendo, then PC from there PS, which lead to Xbox.

The only one ignorant is the one who feels he needs to bash somebody for not liking the same 5 titles that you do. You're saying they defined AAA titles, is a matter of opinion(granted this is all opinion based anyway). I don't fine the majority of said titles you mentioned as defining. I don't need to play them in this day and age, when ya can just go and watch gameplay after gameplay of said games..and read review after review. Not going to waste my money or time to try them out, especially as I mentioned when the majority have no multi-player(which to me equals low replay value).

Not sure how this makes someone stuck in the 360 days lol when I owned an Xbox One then S, then X. Now I own two Xbox Series Xs and a Nintendo Switch, plus I have my own PC built in 2015, but yea I must still be stuck in the 360 days lol. Think someone is just butthurt because the games you like for instance lame old Spider-Man with his annoying voice, not everyone cares for. Just like not everyone cares for single player games. I think you'll find the one stuck in the past is yourself..from my experience I'd say multi-player games are the biggest out of the bunch, not single player games.

Games like Fortnite($5.1 billion in generated revenue 2020), Apex(on track to a billion dollar franchise by end of 2020), PUBG, Grand Theft Auto 5(140 million copies sold), Red Dead Redemption 2(over 26 million sold) etc. All games by the way that are multi-platform. I mean look at Fortnite probably arguably the biggest game ever, even though it's "free".

You can sit there and try and deny it all you want but multiplatform aka third party tend to be the biggest games, that's facts.

I mean the few times I've been on Apex it's full of Sony players...your 5 games are so great yet they sure do seem to spend a lot of time on a multi-platform cross gen title....

Not to mention sports games like the FIFA series, Madden, or game like SIMS(huge series).

I guess a lot of people like playing multi-platform or as you stated "lazy and tired old games", some of the biggest third party games generate the most money, not any of your top 5 games are close to that..

Lol Deathloop, is that the one where they showed a trailer of him looking in a box...wait that was the lame looking Death Stranding. Yea, Deathloop right the game coming to Xbox and can be played on GamePass without having to pay $60. Enjoy the game. I'm content with playing it a year from now, will have tons of other games to play, on my no game box according to you.

I would also hardly call Sonys year astounding and then lead with a remake and Spider-Man...I mean really then you throw Ratchet and Clank which is fine visual wise but even long time fans and reviewers were saying that it's nothing new. Still the same thing you would expect from the series...unless you count rifts as something spectacular. Now you're mentioning indies and that's fine...all your big titles you mentioned don't have release dates and as history shows will probably be delayed until 2023 and beyond. I wouldn't be surprised to see Horizon delayed yet again..GOW easily 2023...Spider man is that even on the radar.

As for my games right now I'm playing Halo Infinite. The game you said that you can't stand. I'll admit Halo 5 I didn't care for...however after playing this it reminds me of the Halo 2 days. I expect the game to be huge.

I've also been playing a lot of State Of Decay 2...tried out No Man's, bought all the Mass Effects to play(had a great deal on it). SOT seeing how they have been regularly updating...I know though for you that must be horrible after all its an old game lol. I recently went back to For Honor too.

Bafflefield 2142

Contraband(open world co-op)

Back4blood(Oct 2021)

Psyconanats 2(August 2021)

Starfield(11/11/2022 xbox exclusive)

Party Animals(2022)

Redfall(2022)

Hades(August)

Diablo 2(Sep)

Forza Horizon 5(Nov)

The Outer Worlds 2

Elden Ring(Jan 2022)

Ark 2

Stalker 2

Crimson Dessert

The Gunk(fall 2021)

Scorn(Fall 2021)

State Of Decay 3

Fable

More to a console and gaming then just exculsives and which has more of it or more games in general....Sony has double+ that of Xbox in terms of games..doesn't make them better its about quality not quantity. I'll take games like Forza, SOT, Halo, State Of Decay, Grounded, Outer Worlds, Cyberpunk, Red Dead, For Honor, It Takes Two, Apex, The Ascent list goes on over Spider-Man or any of the main titles that Sony players go on about.

Also, Spider-Man sold 6.5 million copies which is pretty good but let's not pretend that it's because of the PS5. The game was released on PS4 after all...

Just agree to disagree rather then trying to convince me why your few titles are better than all others.

@bababooey12: I don’t agree though. Your argument was that of attach rate, ignorant of the variety available on Playstation. I mention all those new franchises because of how they differ to one another. For example, if the first Xbox had launched with some decent exclusives, it wouldn’t have had a 50% attach rate. So throwing all your chips into a single MP exclusive isn’t exactly wise considering the low sales of the console. Therefore sales were only at 4 million by January 2004. Whereas Sony launch with the variety and breadth which reaches out to a lot of different types of gamers. We play Apex because it’s amazing. Fortnight isn’t.

We also play Ghost of Tsushima multiplayer. The last multiplayer game Xbox released remains unfinished and the new Halo will also be a lazy GaaS, developed over this decade. The incompetent 343 like making multiplayer games because they don’t need to make a lot of maps for a genre in decline. Then you speak of quality over quantity when it’s actually MS who have double the gaming studios. They’re just too comfortable and lazy, clearly, if everything they release is either half-made and anything that actually is finished comes out looking like State of Decay or Crapdown. All whilst mentioning The Outer Worlds too, which very obviously wasn’t even play-tested. You can just jump over everything like a badly-textured Halo campaign with no particle effects. Truly shoddy low level of quality. It’s really bad. It seems then that it’s Sony who have less quantity at a much higher quality then. They deliver great games. We’re all still waiting on Xbox to do that.

That’s right, fewer studios… but higher quality. PS Studios that are adequately financed. Which is why they release finished pieces of art rather than half finished GaaS crap. Sony’s quality over Microsoft’s unmanageable quantity. Microsoft need better financial management for their games because it really is all about the games. That’s why you play cheaply made Xbox games which really, should be completely “Free” like Apex.

You mention Scorn, despite me wanting that game 6 years ago, they go to Xbox where they can sit around and not develop anything. Which is why we haven’t seen any new gameplay in six years. Meanwhile, you mention Grounded without understanding the awesome MP/Survival/Co-op and crafting potential that game had. So what would you know about a game like that? Microsoft never should have touched it. And now they’ve completely given up on it. Which is a shame.

@bloodbornelore: Not going to keep going back and fourth it's pointless. Again the OG Xbox was Microsofts first, hard for them to put out those exculsives when they were just starting out....at any rate luckily I can play all the third party titles on my console of choice.

Like I said to each their own. Enjoy your few great exculsives when they launch in the next 1 and half or 2 years if you're lucky. I'll be enjoying all the more popular third party games and any Xbox exculsives(day 1 and bonus of not paying) when they come out as well. Can't say the same for Sony.

Grounded had and still has a lot of potential, for someone claiming to know so much about it, you seem to lack the understanding of the fact they're still updating it. Having put out an update weekly for the last month. If you also knew anything about it you would've understood that the game was put out in the state it was for the community to help the game development progress etc. Obsidian has honored that and continues to do so with their updates.

@bababooey12: I am a knight after all.

You’re contradicting yourself again. Few titles? Sony are always releasing great titles. That’s what they do. You can’t say they have more quantity and then say they have “few titles” as if you believe Xbox have more games in the pipeline because that’s a contradictory statement.

Having just Halo at launch doesn’t offer much variety, hence the 50% attach rate. Understand?

They didn’t even have anything to launch their new console with. That’s why you’re still waiting to play last-gen quality titles, which was actually a significant step-up in quality over the exclusives we had during the PSwii60 era… not that you would know that.

Let me know when Microsoft can produce a game that’s on par with the GOW reboot. Games will improve further… but Xbox games won’t improve beyond that. A lot of companies have stagnated. They’d better pull their finger out and release a decent trailer of a game some time. Stalker 2 looked great but that’s only timed exclusive. Still… that’s the first decent thing I’ve seen Microsoft fund in a long time. Like the Horizon: Forbidden West gameplay shown a few months ago… you definitely need to show your wife that. She’ll be telling you to upgrade your system after she witnesses H:FW.

I checked out Grounded about three weeks ago, the crafting options are practically empty, the ant combat is clunky and you still can’t go inside the house. It could be the next [The] Forest. I doubt MS will throw anymore money at it. It’s a shame but what’s done is done. It’s just another lazy GaaS from MS like Halo: Infinite.

@bloodbornelore: Ah, weak arguement considering GamePass doesn't have just first party titles...is Grand Theft Auto, Red Dead, what like all of EA titles, MLB The Show, etc mediocre...now if you wanted to say 1st party that is one thing...a lot of people will disagree with you. I don't fine State Of Decay, Gears, Halo, Horizon, Grounded, SOT etc mediocre. Are they mediocre because what...they're not the same hack and slash single player game that plagues PS or the hey let's take an old game and remake it then turn around and sell it for top dollar like on PS...or hey let's take a game and nake a director's cut... lol. Playstation players live in a world where they think their games are the best...to each their own. Also, when was it mention that the price would rise...it's $10 a month for GamePass and $5 for gold. I mean whatever I'm good on both until middle of 2023. Geez GamePass sounds like such a horrible thing...so terrible I can play all these games day one etc without having to shell out $60 plus to buy them first.

@bababooey12: So you bought a next gen console to play last gen games on. I don’t think GamePass is horrible. You’re on your own with that one. But to bring credence to your statement, it’s true that Microsoft haven’t bothered with a great new IP in ages and that’s why I’m eager to see what the Initiative can do. However, new AAA IP’s is something MS evidently prefer to avoid, unless it’s an unfinished GaaS of course. PS games are markedly better games and they have more shooters than they do hack and slash (no need for any rebuttal for that, it’s pretty obvious to any Gamer, considering their incredible breadth, variety and their attractiveness to girl gamers and appreciated the entire world over). Then there’s how you reveal yourself to be a From-hating casual. Who do you think is living in their own little world then in this regard? Me or you?

@bloodbornelore: I bought a next gen system for the hardware boost, plus all the games coming out in the future like the rest of this year...however optimizing on current gen games is more then reason enough to buy one..FPS and the SSD. I mean I never have to wait to play anything.

Then, like I said the next half is looking great with Psyconanats 2, Back 4 Blood, Halo, Forza, Jan too.

Ps games Lol are not majority of shooters...there First party titles are exactly what I said a bunch of single player titles that are usually all similar like God Of War types or Final Fantasy. Not sure how you can sit there and say that the majority of PS games are shooters. I mean hell half the complaints I see about xbox coming from PS players is Xbox is full of shooters. Think your the first person I've ever read a comment from that said PS has more shooters then anything else lol.

Rachet and Clank, Spider-Man, GOW, Returnal, Horizon are those all shooters?.

Lol not sure what their attractiveness to girl gamers has to do with anything, plenty of girl gamers on the Xbox side too along with couples etc.

I get what you're trying to say but as someone who switched from PS and stopped playing around PS3..have to disagree with you, the lack of variety is one big reason I switched..lack of multi-player which still largely stands today their biggest games are single player. All the people I knew who had one would only play sports games or Gran Theft Auto at the time better games is a matter of opinion. As I state you live in your own world.

Also what new IPs of recent are we talking about for Sony? Ratchet and Clank isn't new. The dark souls remake wasn't new. Godfall? Which is also on Microsoft Windows and has horrible reviews. I think there is Returnal...isn't that also just single player. Oh maybe Death Stranding..wait single player.

The variety in multi-player certainly isn't there. I see way more variety on Xbox as well as multi-player, which for me works out better in terms of replay value. State Of Decay 2, SOT, Grounded, Forza etc. If I can have a single player campaign and multi-player, I'll take that over just single player any day.

~ Don’t lie. You are waiting on next gen games. Whereas PS5 owners have had them since launch.

~ Your desperation knows no bounds. I didn’t say the majority of PS exclusives were shooters. I said they had more exclusive shooters than hack and slashers. Because you were claiming that that’s what most of them are, completely ignoring Sony’s sheer breadth and variety. You asked me a question, I answered it straight and you still twisted it to suit some narrative about them being mostly hack and slash games, which couldn’t be farther from the truth.

@bloodbornelore: lol if I was waiting on next gen games I would say that...the games will come. In the meantime there are plenty of games to play now, especially with GamePass. The majority of those games have also been optimized to take advantage of the hardware, increase in FPS, Graphics etc. Then add in the SSD speed from the console and again I stand by what I said before quite happy with my purchase especially when one out of two consoles only cost me $150. Nothing on the Sony side that has come out since the PS5 launched interests me, even more so when I enjoy mutiplayer games which as I stated before Sony lacks in that department.

Lol exculsive shooters like what? I actually countered what you said originally the most talk about games on PS are not shooters...again the majority of the games or at the very least the biggest games have that hack and slash Japanese gameplay/narrative feel to them. FF, GOW, Horizon. Couple that with the single player aspect that most of their games are(especially their biggest titles) and I just don't see how you get variety out of that.

The only exculsive shooter I would say that really stuck out was Killzone.

@bababooey12: It’s very easy to settle this. You said they had more hack and slash games than any other genre and then I argued that by saying they had more exclusive shooters than hack and slash. So let’s settle this once and for all: Resistance: FOM, Resistance 2, Resistance 3, Killzone 1-3, Killzone: Shadowfall, Uncharted is a cover-shooter, and there’s four of them. Now… you try to list more hack and slash games. Obviously you can’t… because you’re chattin utter shit. You’re completely in denial of Sony’s plethora of different titles released each and every year.

@rapster228: Lol having a conversation related to games etc on a game site, means we need to grow up. How about you contribute something meaningful to the topic if not move along.

@bababooey12: I called Xbox games mediocre, right? Just an opinion. Now you wish to argue my opinion with another opinion. A subject about quality. We’re gonna be here all day. Lmao.

@rapster228: I think you’re just jealous because you’re old and fed up but too fed up to do anything about it.

@bloodbornelore: I am old. <sigh...>

Not too fed up to do something about it though, hence why I wear a thong.

@Flyin3lvl: lol, seems. But if there were even a 100k on ebay it would plummet the price down of the console to MSRP if not below it. Nothing in consumer electronics can withstand competition or 'availability' in a trading /marketplace.
