PSX Skips 2018, As Sony Confirms No PlayStation Experience This Year

"We don't want to set expectations really high and then not deliver."

PlayStation won't be holding its annual PlayStation Experience event this year, worldwide studios head Shawn Layden has confirmed. He said that the company reached the difficult decision based on where it currently stands on several projects, and didn't want to set expectations for a high-profile media event like PSX without much to show.

"We won't have it in the States this year," Layden said on the PlayStation Blogcast. "Now that we have Spider-Man out the door, we're looking down into 2019 games like Dreams and Days Gone. But we wouldn't have enough to bring people all together in North America to have that event. We don't want to set expectations really high and then not deliver on that. It was a hard decision, but we have determined that this year we will not hold PlayStation Experience."

Now Playing: PlayStation Experience 2018 Isn't Happening - GS News Update

This comes on the heels of a notably smaller E3 from Sony this year, which focused squarely on four games: Spider-Man, Death Stranding, The Last of Us: Part II, and Ghost of Tsushima. It featured a few surprises like debut trailers for third-party games like Control and Resident Evil 2 as well. The PlayStation Experience (PSX) debuted in Europe in the early 2000s, then went dormant for years before coming to the United States in 2014. It's been held every year since until this one.

Spider-Man has been a massive success for Sony, having broken records set by God of War only months earlier. Meanwhile, Dreams looks to be an incredibly ambitious project, and Days Gone, not so much.

I'm telling ya....they're saving their thunder for next year because they're gonna announce the PS5 in March and go nuts at E3.

Been saying it all along. Next year=next gen.

@olddadgamer: I wouldn't bet on it, too early and PS4 still going strong.

@olddadgamer: I've been saying this for a while, too. And every single signal coming from Sony points into that exact direction.

It's not that Sony doesn't have anything new to show. It's that they simply cannot show it yet.

2019 will mark the beginning of the "transitional phase" between the PS4 and the PS5. Yes, that's been said. But people totally misread it thinking it meant a late 2021 launch. No, the "transitional phase" BEGINS with the PS5 release.

Mike Cerny has been a big proponent of a more gradual generational curve. And that means shorter, 3-year gaps in between new consoles (new gen, mid-gen refresh and so on). Which makes perfect sense since consoles shifted to standard x86 architecture.

You see, now there's virtually no learning curve for developers with each new console launch. And that is an extremely positive paradigm shift. New consoles will simply mean less boundaries. No radically new SDKs, no waiting for the next generation of that game engine, no head scratching with that daunting new system architecture. Plus… nearly automatic backwards compatibility, not only for games but accessories too (I'm looking at you, PSVR).

Alas, zero disruption. Which will all culminate with streaming boxes some time in the future, when there will be no transition at all. Sony's long-term strategy has been set.

I'd be VERY surprised if they don't announce the PS5 before E3 2019.

@olddadgamer: i don't think they will announce ps5 until last of us 2 and ghost of tsushima is released. it would be odd to hype up a new console before some of the best ps4 releases are out there first... early 2020 (january) ps5 announcement seems more likely to me. they have one more awesome year ahead of them and they will take full advantage of that -- days gone, dreams, ghost of tsushima, last of us 2 and perhaps even death stranding all out in 2019... never mind all the great 3rd party games they have lined up. we probably would have had more leaks by now if a march (2019) announcement was imminent.

@Xristophoros: Oh, see, I think the opposite is true. I think that with the PS4 being knocked (rightly) for having a very disappointing launch line up, they're not making that mistake again. I think we're being primed for those games to be PS5 release titles, and, if that's the case, then the PS5 HAS to be out next year. No way Sony spent all of 2018's E3 for a bunch of games that won't be out until 2020. You do E3 for games that are (probably, cuz delays) coming out next year. Right?

I'd rather be told "Sorry, we've got nothing to show this year because we'd rather take this time to polish our games up than blow a month showing incomplete work" than "Look at this awesome game! Coming soon! I mean it! Really!" and then have said awesome game rushed into mediocrity because rabid fans demand its release that much sooner.

I don't mind. I hate when any of the game companies announce up-coming games and then say they are only a short 8 years to release.

@lion2447: Same, too many companies do this. Film industry does it too. That’s what I like about Bethesda, they normally announce games within like 4 months of a release date. Although they kind of screwed that up with their announcements of ES6 and Starfield, which are WAY far away.

It is fine, most likely they had nothing new to show in the show so why make themselves look like an *** on a stage. I am happy with God of War and Spider Man this year. Really hope Ghost and Last of Us 2 launches next year however.

@Terminator95: Nah, there will always be a third. There was a rumour awhile back about Samsung giving it a shot. Doubt it, but you never know.

Good choice. They already spend millions on E3 and the other shows; these events are nice but ultimately have less impact on sales than most other Mktg.spend.

GOW has an easy shot at a GOTY sweep

@Pyrosa: GoW was incredible, but saying it will have an easy shot at a GOTY sweep in a year that Rockstar releases a game is pretty naive.

@Berserk8989: you're right. rockstar gets an easy pass just like nintendo when it comes to goty winners. red dead redemption was an 8 at best but people call it a masterpiece. zelda breath of the wild also has MANY faults that are overlooked. god of war is likely the true goty this year, regardless if rockstar sweeps all the goty awards. i mean, gta 4 is so terrible i had to stop playing it a few hours in, yet people praised it to the moon. i don't understand it. gta v was great, i will give them credit when it is due.

@Xristophoros: GOW is the true goty because you don't like Rockstar games... Everyone can have their own opinion ofc, but thing is millions of people buy these Rockstar games and based on reviews nearly all rate them 9 or 10 (minus the obvious troll ones and stuff like "game didn't start 0/10"(which I dont think is troll because if game doesnt work of course I'll give it very low score)) and will play them for a bunch of years.

GOW is a good game, but Rockstar games are a phenomenon.

Of course RDR2 hasn't launched yet, and Rockstar has made games like Table Tennis and Midnight Club which no one cared about

@PrpleTrtleBuBum: well, i just stated that gta v was great, so it's not like i dislike all rockstar games. i said they get an easier time with the press in the same way nintendo does... this can be attributed to how mainstream their games are. universal appeal is one thing, but universal excellence of the highest regard? not always, no. red dead surely did not deserve 10s, i can tell you that much. it was far too limited with its mission scenarios and the story had very bad pacing and a lackluster conclusion. red dead 2 will be littered with mtx and people will forgive it. content will be locked behind pre-order bonuses and people will forgive it. the game will have performance issues abound (single player included) and people will forgive it. it is time people rated these games what they actually deserve... we'll have to wait until the official release, but the problems i mentioned are all but guaranteed at this point.
