Razer honoring unauthorized 90% off coupon code

Peripheral maker CEO says company will not cancel orders placed using the code, even though company stands to lose "insane amount" of money.

Computer peripheral maker Razer will honor an unauthorized coupon code it discovered this week that granted United Kingdom shoppers 90 percent off their orders. Writing on Facebook (via Polygon), Razer CEO Min-Liang Tan explained that Razer could legally cancel orders placed using the code, but won't because of its longstanding consumer-first policy.

No Caption Provided

"While we have the option of cancelling the orders legally, we’ve always had a customer-comes-first policy at Razer and in respect of this incident, we have decided to honor the orders that were placed using the unauthorized code by Razer fans buying single products for their own use," Tan wrote.

Honoring the 90 percent off code will result in Razer seeing an "insane amount of losses" due to products being sold significantly below costs, Tan said. Despite this, he explained that Razer wants to "do right by the community" and so will honor the codes.

"Our focus is on doing the right thing for our fans, the gamers and the community, not for resellers or users to profit from this," Tan said. "That’s not gaming, that’s not our deal."

Tan explained that it will take weeks--and months in some cases--to processes and ship all orders. This is due to the high volume of orders and the fact that many of the items users purchased were backordered to begin with.

"We appreciate everyone’s patience, and we thank all of our customers for their support. Game on," he wrote.

Razer recently launched its own gaming tablet, the Razer Edge. For more, check out GameSpot's extended coverage of the device.

I have no doubt in my mind that Razer consulted their attorneys and PR people, and the attorneys likely told them the percent chance of ending up in court if they don't honor the coupons and the PR people likely told them what a success it would be for PR and so they made their decision with at least that in mind.

I congratulate Razer on a PR Boon.

I love Razer and respect their customer supportive decision as well. Actually I used that offer and happy to see my order at lowest price.

Many many thanks to Razer, but i should give credit to promocodeslady.com for their Razer Zone coupon page where I got that deal.

Once again, Razer not disclosing numbers. There are probably a few hundred that capitalized on the system error. This won't hurt them at all. If anything, it gave them a chance to play the hero card and free marketing.

Tax write off could very well be a possibility.

They should have told the people who used the coupons to eff off. They are probably fearful of some sort of internet backlash but I don't really think that would happen in this case.

Why is honoring a fraudulent coupon the "right thing to do"? And if you are going to make a fraudulent coupon, why not just do 99.9% off? I'm going to make a sign and put it in front of Best Buy, "everything inside is free", I hope they do the right thing and honor it.

They probably leaked the coupons like publishers "leak" game footage on purpose. It may be a PR stunt in theory. Great for the people who got them and will get lot of positive PR

Wow, my respect for razer just quadrupled. Seems like all one sees lately is company's doing just the opposite; companies that do right really stand out.

@kekejefferis i still have an original G15 with the flip LCD screen that i use every day and still works great. had a MX1000 mouse and loved it, but changed over to a corded G700. I also got a darkfield anywhereMX for my laptop and it really does work on glass and pretty much any other surface. You may have paid more, but u are getting good products.

Ive tried razer stuff and ive not been impressed

@blackothh Thanks, im enjoying the G110 so far, I also like that the keys are very quiet when typing.

I actually didnt pay all that much for it, RRP is £60+ but I shopped around and found it for under £30. so far very happy and it goes nicely with my Logitec mouse and surround sound speakers. :]

do you realize that mass manufacturing these items are dirt cheap. I'm sure they aren't making profits but I'm sure they are moving units.

@Rocket2Uranus

A 90% discount would force most companies to eat a loss on the product. When you factor in cost of materials, packaging, shipping, cost of labor etc. it adds up fast. They might stand to gain from it in the long term from continued costumer loyalty, but in the short term they'd be losing money

Does anyone know is these coupon codes applied to certain items? Or anything? Because it would be insane to get that premium Edge tablet or one of their gaming laptops for 90% off!

@FollowY0urBliss I believe the code was 1234, don't bother trying though. It was a UK store specific thing apparently and they seemed to have taken the 'buy' option off of products until they sort it!

true, or some marketing trick? I'm just wondering how many units have been ordered with the 90% off coupon. Maybe it's for an older sku to get rid of it until the newer sku arrives. Could have been with an asterisk saying ''while quatities last''. We don't have much info on this. But then again the result is happy gamers, and good reputation for the company...who cares

Lol some guy made unauthorised coupons and thought he was trolling the consumers. Then razor comes out and say "yea we'll take them". So much for that guy.

Damn, I sure would like to have a Razer Hydra... but I don't really have a use for one until games support it. Though I'm sure it'll be a hot commodity in 2015 to be used alongside the Oculus Rift.

Currently using a Blackwidow Ultimate Stealth keyboard (boxing day for 90 bucks), and it's a solid keyboard. Regardless of their more gimmicky products, Razer usually makes solid products when they stick to fundamentals.

That's nice, but PR tricks don't fool me so easily. As if they are really losing that much, their products are so overpriced for having nothing more than a few extra buttons, a comfy surface and cool LEDs, so what are they really losing? If anything, 90% coupons are closer to the price of the actual materials used.

@TohouAsura yeah your right but if they sold it for how much it cost them to make then they would see no profit, they sell over to make a profit buy materials and pay employes you sir need to go take an economics class.

@M15F1TT @TohouAsura The profit they make is much more than the materials are actually worth.

You don't sell the products for 1 to 1. But you do not need to sell them for 8 to 1 either.

You need to take a reading comprehension class.

What a dumb move! So what happens when another unauthorized coupon gets released? Will they honor it as well? What happens if it's 95% off or maybe even 99% off. They should've cancelled the orders.
