Replacement for Overwatch "Butt Pose" Revealed

Here's the new victory pose for Tracer.

In March, Blizzard Entertainment announced that it would replace Overwatch's controversial "butt pose" for the character Tracer. Now, the replacement for the animation victory has been revealed.

Posted on NeoGAF, the new animation focuses less on Tracer's backside than the previous version. You can see the original version here, while it's also embedded below.

Controversy around Tracer's animation victory emerged at the end of March, when someone in the Overwatch forums said they were none-too-pleased with it.

Overwatch game director Jeff Kaplan replied to the thread, saying Blizzard was planning to replace the post so as to create a more welcoming environment for all players. "We want *everyone* to feel strong and heroic in our community. The last thing we want to do is make someone feel uncomfortable, under-appreciated, or misrepresented," he explained. "Apologies and we'll continue to try to do better."

At the time, Kaplan acknowledged that Blizzard was not exactly thrilled with the first version.

"We weren't entirely happy with the original pose, it was always one that we wrestled with creatively," Kaplan explained. "That the pose had been called into question from an appropriateness standpoint by players in our community did help influence our decision--getting that kind of feedback is part of the reason we're holding a closed beta test--but it wasn't the only factor. We made the decision to go with a different pose in part because we shared some of the same concerns, but also because we wanted to create something better."

Some have suggested that Blizzard's decision to revisit the pose is bad news because it means the developer is caving in to community demands, which could create a slippery slope. But Kaplan doesn't exactly see it that way.

"We wouldn't do anything to sacrifice our creative vision for Overwatch, and we're not going to remove something solely because someone may take issue with it," he said. "Our goal isn't to water down or homogenize the world, or the diverse cast of heroes we've built within it. We have poured so much of our heart and souls into this game that it would be a travesty for us to do so.

"We understand that not everyone will agree with our decision, and that's okay. That's what these kinds of public tests are for. This wasn't pandering or caving, though. This was the right call from our perspective, and we think the game will be just as fun the next time you play it."

Overwatch launches on May 24 for PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4. The beta starts earlier in the month and you can read this post to get all the details about how you can get in.

In other news about Tracer, she's also coming to Blizzard's Heroes of the Storm.

My wife likes the pose Blizzard removed better, she says it speaks "Come and get me" while the new pose says: "I am girly". I am inclined to agree with her. I think the original pose worked better for who Tracer is as a character.

I love how ONE SINGLE PERSON out of millions "complains" about a pose in a stupid photo for a video game and they change it like cowards. When all the person had to do was move about their day and not look. Yet, millions complain about our Govt and nothing get's done...

Since when is a "Sexy pose" something wrong? If you don't like it, stop looking. But hey, it's far more important than the greedy, corrupt, govt we have. Let's worry about poses in video game art more ok?

The amount of gutless, cowering, wimps in our society today disgusts me. Politically Correctness is nothing but brainwashing and goes AGAINST the very fabric of BEING HUMAN! This site is a promoter of that agenda and continually shoves it down your throat, so does IGN. It's why I rarely come here and even more rarely comment.

@DarthLod: God forbid that one loud person ever sees any Japanese game. What would they say about Street Fighter? Of course though, I doubt you'll hear them scream and cry about the double standard there is, since men are equally sexualized in virtually every game ever, and really all pop culture. But let's just let the extremist feminist agenda sway our opinions and censor everything.

Not going to lie, I still think it's odd that her butt-crack is so sharply defined. It looks less like she's wearing clothes and more like someone spray painted her ass orange. Looking at the picture makes me feel like a have to pull out a wedgie.

This is actually really awesome.

Internet loses it's shit over someone who didn't like a silly pose in a video game. Blizzard comes back with an even better pose that fits the character WAY better and hopefully can please everyone.

For the record, I was against them removing the original pose even though I agreed that it didn't really fit the character of Tracer, but now I see this new one, i'm glad they changed it.

My god this is such a stupid issue to care about, but well done Blizzard.

Even better. It's now very reminiscent of a 1950's pin-up girl pose. Good on you Blizzard!

I cancelled my pre-order because I had thought Blizzard caved in to these annoying vocal PC minorities that cry about everything, but instead they replaced the original pose with an even more provocative pose which makes me smile. Instead of caving as I thought they had done, they just gave those horrendous annoying ppl the biggest middle finger they possibly could.

Well played Blizzard. Game re-pre-ordered.

Blizzard used guerrilla marketing to bring more exposure to Overwatch. I highly doubt one anonymous person on the internet can have their request granted by a company in such quick fashion. I bet both my kidneys this Fipps fellow who made the complaint works at Blizzard. The company then changes the victory pose into something that looks more risqué ha.

Wow...people really get offended over this? Remind me to cry, next time that i see a shirtless guy with a shape twice better as mine. This apply to men that doesn't have a godly physique by any mean. I would never ask for it to be removed, however. This is taking a problem to the extreme and i can feel comfortable with myself without ripping everyone off of what they might like, even if i don't. Self acceptance over the masses identification would help a lot of these people out. Stereotypes are just too easy to cry out for, nowadays. Some extremes cases might be worth the effort but i think that there is bound to have sexy persons/things, in life. I'm just a bit unsure why that battlefield was taken into videogames but you cannot reason with a human being. It's always all or nothing on all fronts...Wich is sad because there is no place for fantasy anymore, everything gotta be exactly the same as in real life, wich is ironic, because it was meant to be a kind of entertainement/escape for people. I would hate to be a game designer, these days :(

Fantastic, now all the guys out there will know that she is "silly" while she still has her back turned.

Now they can feel "silly" playing a female character in a video game, instead of a sex symbol.

Much better pose. The pose is much more agile and playful, which is what the character is supposed to be all about.

If all the other characters are posing the same way I have no problem with it. Anyway her buttocks do not have more bounce to the ounce anyway. :)

I wish I could see the face of the person who kicked up all this fuss in the first place, because that makes her butt even more noteworthy as well as showing us how limber she is.

@luciferous: The person who made the original post on the Overwatch forums that started all this already made a follow-up thread commenting how they really like the new pose. Because the primary cause of all this was how the old pose was generic and didn't reflect Tracer's personality in anyway. While this new pose shows off more of Tracers fun-loving, spunky personality.

And because devs backed down on something so stupid is why I wont support this game, they are weak and eventually will make changes depending on every little detail the players ask for, and as you can see with this as an example, SOME PLAYERS ARE IDIOTS. This is only the start and the game isn't even out yet.

@helldragonzer: ARMIGAD people ruined the game that I was SUPPOSED to get!

It's not your game. They make the game, they get to decide what the final build of the game is like. You don't have to buy the game, but... crap, do I really have to explain this? A review is essentially a form of feedback. I don't imagine you are against the concept of a review, so I have to imagine that you are just against feedback that "hurts you."

So is this REALLY hurting you that much?
