Replacement for Overwatch "Butt Pose" Revealed

Here's the new victory pose for Tracer.

In March, Blizzard Entertainment announced that it would replace Overwatch's controversial "butt pose" for the character Tracer. Now, the replacement for the animation victory has been revealed.

Posted on NeoGAF, the new animation focuses less on Tracer's backside than the previous version. You can see the original version here, while it's also embedded below.

Controversy around Tracer's animation victory emerged at the end of March, when someone in the Overwatch forums said they were none-too-pleased with it.

Overwatch game director Jeff Kaplan replied to the thread, saying Blizzard was planning to replace the post so as to create a more welcoming environment for all players. "We want *everyone* to feel strong and heroic in our community. The last thing we want to do is make someone feel uncomfortable, under-appreciated, or misrepresented," he explained. "Apologies and we'll continue to try to do better."

At the time, Kaplan acknowledged that Blizzard was not exactly thrilled with the first version.

"We weren't entirely happy with the original pose, it was always one that we wrestled with creatively," Kaplan explained. "That the pose had been called into question from an appropriateness standpoint by players in our community did help influence our decision--getting that kind of feedback is part of the reason we're holding a closed beta test--but it wasn't the only factor. We made the decision to go with a different pose in part because we shared some of the same concerns, but also because we wanted to create something better."

Some have suggested that Blizzard's decision to revisit the pose is bad news because it means the developer is caving in to community demands, which could create a slippery slope. But Kaplan doesn't exactly see it that way.

"We wouldn't do anything to sacrifice our creative vision for Overwatch, and we're not going to remove something solely because someone may take issue with it," he said. "Our goal isn't to water down or homogenize the world, or the diverse cast of heroes we've built within it. We have poured so much of our heart and souls into this game that it would be a travesty for us to do so.

"We understand that not everyone will agree with our decision, and that's okay. That's what these kinds of public tests are for. This wasn't pandering or caving, though. This was the right call from our perspective, and we think the game will be just as fun the next time you play it."

Overwatch launches on May 24 for PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4. The beta starts earlier in the month and you can read this post to get all the details about how you can get in.

In other news about Tracer, she's also coming to Blizzard's Heroes of the Storm.

I think people are missing the point. Blizzard removed the old pose not because it showed her butt, as everyone believe, but because they thought it wasn't in line with the character. The original pose was serious and sexy while Tracer is supposed to be funny and bubbly. It didn't jive.

So, they replaced it with a pose that shows her personality more while still being a bit sexy. The butt was never the issue. Even the poster that started this whole debacle said she didn't have any issues with WidowMaker's poses, which are even more sexy because it fits her character.

I am glad this whole thing is over. Now, let's talk about the game for what it is and not for some stupid pose controversy.

@reBOOT2099: I think you are missing the point. It was OPTIONAL. Many of the optional skins and poses have nothing to do with the personality of the characters, they're there to give players fun options.

For instance, there is a MOBA called Smite, it has a god called Bacchus. There is a skin available for him that literally turns him into Santa Clause. Has literally nothing to do with his character. No one is calling for it to be removed, no one is complaining that it doesn't fit Bacchus's personality, because it's optional, and if you don't like it, you don't have to use it, but it's cool to have fun options.

A youtube personality named Totalbiscuit released a parody response video to the whole ordeal that is both funny and spot on, you should watch it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ydii76-1l5w

@bluefox755: I know who Total Biscuit is (and I actually played a pitiful game of Starcraft2 against him a few years back that Husky comented and made fun of us both..it was pitiful..anyways, I digress) and I will watch that video later. Thanks.

But it won't change the fact. Optional or not, this pose is not a skin, it represents the original character. And the artists and production team felt it did a disservice to the character to stay with that pose. That's their call. I actually do not agree with it as I liked the pose. But I see their point.

This whole thing is blown out of proportion and really stupid. Blizzard decided to change something in the game and that's all it is. It is a beta. Changes are made all the time. This time, people thought it was about caving-in and pandering and they got mad. This new pose shows it wasn't it, or they would've made a pose where her butt didn't show. End of story.

@reBOOT2099: But even the point is missing the point. "they thought it wasn't in line with the character"

Just think about how nuts that is. Who doesn't know a funny and bubbly woman who likes to joke around like that? Should I start naming female comedians, actresses, musicians, internet personalities, athletes, etc? Now people are telling developers how they should treat their characters. I hate seeing people attack art. She's just supposed to be sweet and kind. Really? She's a killer who wears yoga pants.

@PS2fweak: The producer said the artists themselves weren't satisfied with the pose to begin with. I am sure that if they were, they wouldn't have changed a thing. They were thinking about changing it and when someone complained, that gave them the incentive to act upon it and stop being indecisive. That's it.

She might be a killer in yoga pants, but she's a BUBBLY killer! It should show! :P

@reBOOT2099: Fair enough. If they honestly were considering changing it, I wish they would've done it before the controversy, but I guess I'll just take their word for it. I just saw it as an option for fans of that character. Tracer's personality has depth and I think that could include a bit of fun/sexy almost as a joke, but whatever.

Anyways, I think we all can have a laugh at this ridiculous Tracer pose...

@PS2fweak: I agree with you. I would have liked for the pose to stay in but that's their call. And to be honest, I didn't really believe them when they said they'll change it because THEY felt it needed changing. But when I saw the new pose in the game today, I started believing them. I was sure they'd change the pose so we couldn't see her butt and that's totally not what I expected. They made the right call. It should calm down those who were yelling "censorship" :)

And yes, I would love to have that animation you posted as part of the game! Hahahaha!

@reBOOT2099: @PS2fweak It'd be nice to see more people argue in this fashion over the internet more often; you know the kind where you actually listen to each other with respect :P

Anyway, I'm trying to do my best to see it from as many sides as possible. In my own opinion, I didn't see anything inherently sexualized about the first pose, but if someone can form a reasonable argument as to why they felt like it is, or potentially doesn't quite fit in the game, then yeah, that's valid. Why Blizzard is doing what it did is not a sign of weakness as so many people are claiming. That's a ridculous accusation, and one that isn't fair. Blizzard has given to us a game in a currently unfinished state. A beta. Subject to change based in part by user feedback. For example, if people start mentioning that Pharah's ultimate is OP in the beta, we should expect a change. That's not weakness, that's an attempt to improve the game for everyone, and I don't feel like this whole ordeal is fundamentally any different, just the context surrounding it, and people's preconceived notions of "PC this" and "SJW that" getting in the way of actually seeing this for what it's worth.

This is a dumber and more impractical pose than the one they replaced. Nobody stands on tip toe just to look over their shoulder in smug victory.

The new pose has just as much butt as the old one, I think the people complaining just have a problem with the character design and are too stupid to realize ( #get over it )

So I guess it's wrong to be sexy huh.....We should just ticket all the scantily clad women and men that walk around in public because we can't control what they wear or that we see them. If you don't like what you see in the game, don't buy it, that way you don't have to look at it. Simple as that.

@surferosh: That's probably because all the things you mentioned aren't interactive and people think this fact "justifies" them. In case of watching movies, they are considered observers of those supposedly lewd activities while in games they are partakers. The latter role is of course taken by media more seriously.

@th3soldier: true, they may not be interactive per se, but they are still consumable media, which stays in people's memory and vulnerable minds are easily influenced by any such things, including comics and novels.

Let us remind the media that most 'revolutions' in history were not brought about by games but by the written word.. at the end of the day, it is the idea and concept of something that influences people, not the medium..

How is this not gender inequality?

If women should be able to show off their bodies in any way they want without being judged or having derogatory words thrown at them, which I agree with, why is it a problem for a fictional character to do the same? There are multiple female characters in Overwatch and they all have different personalities. Why can't Tracer show off her butt? Male characters can do whatever they want. This just seems ass backwards ;)

Dude when you wear neon-orange yoga pants, your butt is gonna show, pose or not.

I mean I get why they changed, but damn...that ass is going to be out there no matter what.

Also I find the new pose a bit more revealing, personally. You see more depth to the butt crack, plus she is standing on her toes which tends to enhance/flex the gluteus maximus, accentuating what we in the science community call " 'dat ass". The new pose is also a lot more female-specific, whereas anyone can turn their cheeks in someone's direction (as in the older pose).

I'm offended people are so easily offended by something unoffensive. Watch, next they'll say it's still too much ass, so they'll change her pants to have a drop-down cloth backing to it.

Progressive modern age, for sure. I bet if this was a male character in that pose, they'd be praising Blizzard for including the LGBT community.
