Resident Evil 2 Remake is 'Rebuilt From the Ground Up,' Capcom Clarifies

Publisher responds to mistranslation from recent investor report.

Capcom has cleared up confusion regarding the scope of its Resident Evil 2 Remake, caused by a recent statement in a company investor report which was interpreted as saying the game is a "remastered" version of the PlayStation classic.

Taking to Twitter, Capcom UK's senior marketing director, Stuart Turner, said "a few people picking up a mistranslation" of the investor report, and confirmed the game is a "full from the ground up remake, NOT a remaster."

In a video released on August 12, Capcom revealed it is remaking Resident Evil 2. The project is being headed up by Yoshiaki Hirabayashi, producer of the Resident Evil HD Remaster released in January 2015, and Capcom R&D Division 1.

In the video Hirabayashi said the project was given the go ahead by senior Capcom staff as a result of the "incredible passion and support" from fans of the game and the series.

"You've been telling us for years that you want Resident Evil 2 to be remade, and we haven't been able to make it happen... until now," he said. "We at R&D Division 1 will do our best to take on your feedback and deliver the gameplay experience you've been waiting for."

The development effort is in the very early stages of development, so Hirabayashi said "it will be some time before [Capcom] can bring you an update on this project."

"As the title is only just starting its development cycle we unfortunately don't have any additional information or assets to share at this time ... For now we want our fans to know that we appreciate all the feedback and support we've received on this title. We're looking forward to delivering this highly anticipated Resident Evil experience that fans have been waiting for."

Capcom's last Resident Evil HD Remaster was released in January 20 on consoles and PC. It broke sales records for the company, becoming the fastest selling digital title in its history across North America and Europe. To follow this up, Capcom announced the remaster of Gamecube exclusive Resident Evil Zero.

I'm excited. This was the first Resident Evil game I ever played and the first Survival horror I played. I really loved it and I hope they do a good job on it.

I'm a huge Resident Evil fan, I even like the live action movies, but I'm completely against remakes. I just can't get into a game if I already know all the story and most of the secrets. Capcom should stick with Revelations and regular numbered sequels.

They already pretty clearly said it was a complete remake of the game.

I trust them to put out nothing but shit. They will ruin my RE2. I'm not living in fear about it, but I know for certain they are going to **** my game up. Every last possible aspect they can ruin, they will ruin it. They'll change the dialog, change the music, change those charming menu sounds, change the inventory UI, change the map, change the gun names, change the items, add in crimson heads, totally change the layout of the city and RPD and the lab, change the canon as much as possible (not that RE2 didn't already change some canon in the first place) to fit more in line with their shitty retcons to REmake, they'll add in new bosses that don't need to exist, it's going to be dreadful. They're treading on hallowed ground when they do these remakes, and the thing is RE2 was far more popular and beloved than the first game .Not that there will be any backlash, because we're all spineless clowns that just buy anything they give us.

I swear to the old gods and the new if they use Claire's fucking horrible meth addict shitty model from Revelations 2 and don't at least TRY to make her look like she did in RE2, RE Degeneration, Darkside Chronicles, or ORC, I'm burning all of my RE merchandise and games including my RE action figures, my RE zippo, everything. I have a lot of it, too, worth a lot of money. On that note if they could kindly not use unremarkable RE6 Ada and generic muscles Leon from RE4 onwards that would be great too.

And I'll buy it anyway like a fucking retard. And complain about it because it is guaranteed to have 1 thing that I hate.

They should add RE3 as a third scenario in this game... after all it would make sense.

@Naewulf: They should at least add the ammo mixing system from RE3 into this game, it would certainly fit very well into the game.

But that being said, I would love it if they made new campaigns for this game. Maybe Leon and Claire could have more than 2 separate campaigns each, so you could have Leon A/Claire B, Leon C/Claire D etc. I think it would be pretty awesome if Ada had her own full campaign that you could unlock after finishing all the other campaigns.

I am SO down for this game! But now that I know it's a remake, (which is want I wanted, I hated the original game's tank controls), I'm hoping they keep the original spirit of the game, and possibly borrow from games Dead Space. Update the control scheme, take out the attache case so you're constantly immersed (a la Dead Space and to a lesser extent, RE5), but use discretion with enemy spawns. Quality over quantity! Dead Space, (the original, and to a lesser extent, DS2), did a great job of having a few key large fights, but for the most part, you had long stretches of just wondering when the hell you were about to be attacked again. Keep the ammo sparse and spend a lot of time on the Ada and Sherry sections so that having them around makes them a mixed blessing. If having a partner means they bring a benefit, (like being able to bypass locks, find more ammo, watch you back, etc., then a slight drawback such as health management or underpowered weaponry/heightened vulnerability would a good compromise.

Also, now that hit detection has gotten so good in games, maybe have some fun and experiment around with the zombie types. If the controls were similar to Dead Space, I think it'd be killer fun to have to target the head for citizen zombies, but have to switch for zombie SWAT officers who have head protection from when they died, or Nat'l Guard zombies who may have had full body armor before getting bitten.

And for the love of God... don't make it a QTE fest like RE6 was! The fun and tension comes from the long stretches between bad guys and the crap-your-pants moments of facing something like a licker armed with only your knife, a pistol, and your will to get to the next save point!

The original RE2 was so good... and now with shows out like The Walking Dead, and a plethora of zombie films that have come out since this game was released, there's a lot of great reference material for what a city of zombies can look like and the perils of being completely overwhelmed and under-gunned can look like. I haven't been excited about RE in a long time, but I'm VERY excited for what this game could potentially be!

@zenogais176: Bruh, just bruh. You hated the original games controls? Then you didn't like the game.

PS There literally were no SWAT or Army zombies in RE2 and there sure as **** better not be in REmake 2.

@ughz: Respectfully, I disagree. Not liking one aspect of a game doesn't mean I didn't like the whole thing. I didn't like the controls, but I loved the plot, characters, and pacing. The control schemes in most modern games has improved vastly, and makes a remake exciting to me.

As for the enemy types, I know they weren't in the original game, but with new graphics and controls, I'm pretty open to seeing some new enemy types. I liked the variations of ganados in RE4 and necromorphs in Dead Space. They stuck to a similar theme but varied in mechanics, making us have to learn and adapt. Fighting early ganados in the village was pretty much a 'shoot anywhere' affair, but later in the game, having guys with shield and flails, or heavy armor made people think on their feet. I think during a city-wide crisis like what was happening in Racoon City, it wouldn't be far fetched that guys had to be out there in SWAT and riot gear and got bit. Even though they still lumber at you, trying to just shoot them in the head while they have a helmet on changes things. Just makes getting after the brain a bit tougher is all. They're not shooting at you, (and hell, it'd be great if that could be a source of ammunition in a high-risk/high-reward scenario after you kill them), but tacking them down is just tougher.

Come on Capcom, I need this to be as great as when Resident Evil Remake was first shown off. I need the same music but only remixed a little. I need more areas, more puzzles, more outfits, and more guns. I want great zombie kill shots with blood splatter on walls and floors. I want realistic bloody foot steps. I want more enemies and more Tyrants busting through walls to make me pee in my pants all over again. Please just work with Shinji mikami again and my wet Resident Evil dream will be fulfilled.

@metroidhunterx: It's not even that with REmake - the shit came out 13 years ago. There's no possible way you could not know it was a total remake, it's almost as old as the game itself.

Just wanna thank the guy who took the time to remake RE2 himself which got Capcom's attention. The fans, myself included, have been asking for this for years like the article says. Its about time. I can't wait. Please don't **** this up. & look into Dino Crisis remakes as well. Dino Crisis 1 & 2 are classics imo.

As long as it's so much like the old games in terms of atmosphere and gameplay and NOTHING like the rotten steamin' pile of shit like "resident evil" 5, 6, 7, Revelations and the operation raccoon city, I'll be very interested.

Ignore the haters capcom, remakes is a great strategy in terms of efficiency and costumer service, what the self centered idiots below fail to realize is that there are plenty of people who entered the RE series in a much later state and most people especially new gen gamers can't jump and play the original games because they are heavily outdated, a remake allows people to get more into the series and allow nostalgia fans to relive the classics using current gen technology, even the haters bitching about getting a new game will get the remakes, so just do what you do capcom! and I hope they become encourage to remake other classics like Megaman and Megaman X, (Powered Up and Maverick Hunter X were awesome games and deserve more sequels)

@Dark_sageX:
Megaman X / Zero were milked to the state of which the writer had to resort to killing off the protags to stop Capcom from milking the series any further - furthermore, Capcom seems to enjoy pretending that Megaman never exists these days. (It's becoming the new Star Fox and X should've stopped at 5)
Peeps that entered the RE series from 4 (Especially 5 onwards) are unlikely to favour the old-school RE gameplay of swinging doors and general lack of emphasize on combat - it's like saying that pre-Bethesda Fallout games would receive any love from those that entered the series from FO3 onwards.

Regardless, I wouldn't mind if they made an actual remake as suggested in the article instead of a cheap remaster cash-in and they do seem to be actually listening to their fans to a certain extent as of late.
Now the question lies in the fact of whether they could pull off a true blue remake or would they try to turn it into something similar to RE6 and whether they're just going to be heavily reliant on their old IPs instead of making new ones.

One way or the other, they did make Dragon's Dogma - that lump of gold was more than enough to forgive half of the shenanigans they've done for the past decade.

@z827: Yeah, X6 was rather lazy game, the sprites were shit and they removed anime cut scenes all together (that was my complaint with X5 as well) and X7 was a disaster, X8 was a pretty good game though and X Command Mission was an awesome RPG, and Megaman Zero was a pretty awesome series as well, I fail to realize why they decided to kill off Megaman, after all Megaman is (was) the mario of capcom, and imo had more fun with Megaman games than Mario, wished capcom would have put their shit together, but I was happy with Maverick Hunter X and I was hoping for a Maverick Hunter X2, unfortunately I don't think that will ever happen :(

Just make a new one that's good. It's not hard. Steal ideas from the competition. Evil Within. Dying Light, Dead Rising, Last of Us, Bloodborne, PT. All of them have great Horror and Survival elements to take.

@roler42: Gears took their idea not the other way around. Resident Evil 4 inspired Gears style just with more cover based combat. The over the shoulder camera was Resident Evil 4. Or @ least RE4 made that camera angle popular (not sure if they were the first).

@Henninger: ....RE6 came out 7 years after Gears of War So yea, no, Chris's campaign was as much "Gear's idea" as any third person shooter can be. RE4 had nothing to do with it. It wasn't the first third person shooter and it certainly wasn't the best.
