Revealed: Nvidia's Next Flagship Graphics Card, the GTX 980Ti

New GeForce GPU carries 6GB of memory, costs $650.

Nvidia has divulged new details of its GeForce 980Ti, the latest addition to its line of premium-priced graphics cards.

Starting at $650 (and bundled with a copy of Batman: Arkham Knight), the GTX 980Ti carries six gigabytes of GDDR5 memory. That's about half the capacity of Nvidia's $1000 Titan X graphics card, but Nvidia believes the 980Ti can perform to a similar standard at about two-thirds of the price.

A gallery below offers a closer look at the new GPU.

Much like with the Titan X, the 980Ti has a 336GB/s maximum bandwidth. Its display outputs are 1x HDMI, 1x DVI, and 3x DP, while it has two power connectors arranged as 1x 6pin and 1x 8pin.

Meanwhile, the GTX 980, due to its drop down the pecking order, will now be sold at $500.

Nvidia's new GeForce prices follow:

  • Titan X: $1000
  • 980 Ti: $650
  • 980: $500
  • 970: $330
  • 960: $200

Mark Aevermann, a spokesperson for Nvidia, told GameSpot that the GTX 980Ti was built with DirectX 12 features in mind.

"This is, by all rights, our flagship GeForce GTX GPU, built on the GM 200 chip," he said, "and we designed it for a lot of the top-end PC features, such as 4K, VR, and G-Sync. These are the things that this card excels at."

And they just made the far more expensive Titan X obsolete. Sucks for the people who bought it.

@godfather830: There are some games that use more than 6GB of VRAM at 4K already, and I would expect that number to grow. So their is still a point to the Titan X if you want to be maxing the fidelity of very single game now and into the near future. This card should have had 8GB, instead.

Can not wait to see what AMD has in store! Switching over from Xbox to PC was one of the best decisions I ever made.

@priestwithgun: Yea, but probably more expensive than both together. What you pay is what you get - sometimes.

@priestwithgun@nikon133: That was figuratively. This card will drop price much more than inflation will eat it. Besides, you cannot purchase PS6 and probably will not for another 10 years, considering that PS4 is only 18 months old... so the comparison is moot anyway.

And I will not keep earning US$30 because I don't live in US ;)

@93ChevyNut@Fia1: I was thinking the same... streaming will be the thing in 10 years, and guest device will be quite irrelevant. Corporate side of I.T. is moving toward subscription model and cloud... it makes sense that gaming will follow, even if, personally, I hate the idea.

As of PC fully replacing consoles... unlikely. Economics will always play a role. For anyone who already has PC that is not gameable - an ultrabook or laptop without gaming-worthy graphics - having a console probably makes more sense than building another PC. Not just because of the price, but also because all other things that PC can do (and console cannot) are already covered.

@priestwithgun: Technically, you cannot play any PS4 exclusive on PC, because if you could, they wouldn't be called exclusives, neh? ;)

You probably meant 90% of the games PS4 gets. I don't know what percentage of games are exclusives on average. I'd guess a bit more than 1 in 10, but who knows.

@priestwithgun@nikon133: I'm not much into Indies, but they did release a few AAA exclusives, too. Bloodborne, 2nd Son, Killzone, DriveClub... probably a few more I forgot or missed.

I think exclusives are reason why PC gamers should consider having console(s) too... so I do as I preach. So far, so good. I prefer enjoying games, not platforms.

Unless someone is into gaming for some sort of tribal reasons, I think this is the best approach to gaming.
