See Teaser For Google's Big Gaming Announcement

Google's "vision for the future of gaming" is coming into focus.

59 Comments

Google is set to make a big-time gaming announcement next week during the Game Developers Conference, and now the company has released a teaser video.

Google plans to reveal its "vision for the future of gaming" during the March 19 event, and this teaser video may contain some initial clues. As you can see, it appears to reference a number of different game genres, including sports, racing, action, fantasy, and others. The suggestion could be that Google's new gaming platform would be a place for all of them.

Now Playing: Google Gaming Announcement Coming Soon - GS News Update

Whatever the case, we'll learn more soon. The event is scheduled for 10 AM PT / 1 PM ET on March 19. The event will be streamed live, and GameSpot will bring you all the news from the show as it happens.

One part of Google's reveal might be related to Project Stream, the company's ambitious game-streaming platform. Last year, Google partnered with Ubisoft to make Assassin's Creed Odyssey playable in a browser. There are also rumors about Google's "Project Yeti," which could be the company's take on a home console.

For more on cloud gaming, check out GameSpot's primer that explains what cloud gaming is all about and how it could shake up the industry.

In other Google news, the company recently hired former Ubisoft and EA boss Jade Raymond as a new vice president. Given her background, it seems likely that she'll be contributing to Google's new gaming division, but nothing is certain yet.

It would take a phenomenal amount of money and marketing to compete with the big three these days. Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo have a firm foothold already especially in brand awareness and experience. Yeah, nah I just can't see someone coming along with to join them at this point. Unless they are seriously serious and have the money to support that seriousness. How is the Steam Box or whatever its called travelling these days?

@ecs33: Yes they do, now they need to spend a tonne of it on an enormously expensive marketing campaign just chasing brand awareness.

Just to compete.

Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo won't sit there watching either. It will be a huge risk which could pay off, it also may not pay off at all.

@Salt_AU: You think they're gonna announce their own console? Highly doubt it. A game streaming service is more their thing, and that's nothing new at this point. I'd much prefer them releasing a real OS so I can finally move away from Windows, which has turned into complete shit at this point thanks to MS' new strategy. And after trying out PS Now currently I really gotta say that nobody needs game streaming. Maybe in the distant future when everyone in the world has perfectly reliable internet, including companies, but right now my 100MBit connection doesn't mean shit when Sony can't provide decent servers, and enough of them. I had to find out yesterday that there are queues for PS Now and had to wait probably around 20 mins just to start a game. Yeah, that's the future of gaming, clearly.

@Atzenkiller: 20 minute queues are addressable. Just because Sony underestimated the demand for the service doesn't mean the entire idea is invalid.

@ecs33: Yeah, sure, everything can be fixed, yet it still doesn't always happen. Maybe at some point in the future, like I said, but right now PS Now is only for folks who don't have a PS4 or PS3, or for those who are willing to put up with the issues that come with game streaming. It's certainly playable, but I sure as hell wouldn't want to pay for a service where the game keeps stuttering all the time, or even loses connection or gets connection issues causing the resolution to drop to something like 240p. There's always a better alternative where you don't have these issues, and that's either buying the current hardware or using emulators for older games, if they haven't been remastered or rereleased yet. Streaming will always have issues that will make it inferior to playing something on the actual hardware, until at some point in the future we might have perfect internet connections and infrastructure, etc. with zero issues 100% of the time. And right now we are still far away from that.

@Atzenkiller: I'm not sold either. I tried on demand gaming a few years ago and it wasn't for me.

I do think there is a market for this sort of thing, but it's never going to be a majority of gamers.

@ecs33: Tried a bit of it WAAYYY back on that Oracle service. Worked great, but I don't get enough playing time to validate paying a monthly subscription for it. Not for me either.

@Atzenkiller:

But Google already announced their Streaming service we've seen that last year so it can't be that can it? Why do this big revealed thing with all this secrecy when they already announced Project Stream and let ppl play Assassin's Creed on it? I think it's something else ore maybe something related to it like a dedicated streaming box and a controller maybe?

@Marky360: I dunno. But if it works through a browser, then what would you need a streaming box for? Any modern tv should be able to handle it by just downloading an app, or using its browser. And for the same reason a console would be pointless, as Google already lets you play games without one. A controller? Maybe, but that would be pointless. Not like Google was gonna completely reinvent controllers and you can already use current gen controllers on PC.

@Atzenkiller: there is actually a rumor that this is a console announcement. There have been controller leaks and everything.

Is it wise? Maybe not. But it may be happening. We'll find out soon I suppose

@Atzenkiller:

These things are all true but I did also see an article for a Google patent for a controller along with the rough draft of what it's supposed to look like. Besides like I said Google already announced their Streaming service so why do another unveil for that and be so secretive about it if ppl already know it exists and what it is? All I can say for sure is they've got something interesting cooking over there.

@Marky360: Has Google publicly shown its streaming service yet to the full extent? All I've heard so far is that there was a closed beta.

@Atzenkiller:

Yea as far as I know there was a video showing Assassin's Creed running on it and how it works but they haven't shown any other games for it.

@Salt_AU: you've got the wrong "big three"...

Intel, NVIDIA, AMD are the giants.

also... this is a service you access from your browser, not a piece of hardware.

BROWSER DRIVEN game streaming. Huh. That is a little bit different. And it is right up Google's alley.

Sadly, this just brings more credence to the idea that traditional gaming will soon be dead. That's a lot of technology titans shitting on it right there.

Ehh I don’t see myself buying yet another console (especially from a company that’s never made one). I feel they will reveal it and then Sony and Microsoft just outdo them

@sd4138: Google isn't stupid. They wouldn't invest so much money into a PS or Xbox clone. It's a new concept of some sort.
