September US game sales slide 8%, hardware down 19% - NPD

Industry-reporting firm's new report format shows steep decline in console, portable sales; Halo: Reach, Madden NFL, Dead Rising 2 top games; PlayStation Move boosts accessories.

For years, the NPD Group has issued hardware totals as part of its monthly report on US game sales. That changed with today's September report, which saw the industry-research firm withhold a comprehensive tally of how the DS, PlayStation 3, PSP, Xbox 360, and Wii fared. Instead, the company reported only overall hardware sales, which fell 19% to $383 million.

However, NPD does not prohibit the big three console makers from saying how many units they sold during the month. So it was little surprise to see Microsoft trumpet the fact that the Xbox 360 was the top console--not including handhelds--for the fourth month in a row. Some 484,000 units sold during the period, an increase of 37 percent year-over-year. As of press time, neither Nintendo nor Sony had issued sales figures for their consoles, but NPD analyst Anita Frazier did shed some light on the matter.

Halo: Reach conquered the competition in September.
Halo: Reach conquered the competition in September.

"Hardware unit sales, with the exception of the Xbox 360, are down versus last September, but a couple other platforms, specifically the PS3 and the PSP are up on an average sales per week basis as compared to last month (August 2010)," she said.

[UPDATE] Analyst reports released on Friday revealed the sales numbers for the Wii and PlayStation 3. The latter sold 312,000 units, a 37 percent decline when compared to brisk post-price drop sales in September 2009. The former sold just 254,000 units, a precipitous 45 percent year-over-year decline. Wedbush analysts blamed the drop on "gamer fatigue" and a lack of major titles for the console.

NPD's overall game sales figures have also changed, thanks to the inclusion of PC game software in the total for the first time. Overall sales of all game software and non-PC hardware and accessories fell 8 percent for the month for a total of $1.22 billion. It was another month of major decline following August's 10 percent slide, although that figure did not include PC software.

On the software side, game sales dropped 5 percent during the month to $655 million. With console and handheld software sales combining for $614 million, that puts the PC game market at $41 million for the month.

Meanwhile, non-PC software declined 6 percent to $614 million despite big sales of Halo: Reach. Though NPD has also stopped offering software unit sales figures, Microsoft was all too happy to declare that the sci-fi shooter had sold 3.3 million units domestically in the two weeks after its September 14 launch.

September also saw NPD change its monthly software chart. Gone are unit sales figures for the top 5, and the top 10 are now for combined sales of an individual title across all platforms, not a single title on a single platform.

Though NPD ceased giving out hardware figures, Microsoft wasn't shy about saying the Xbox 360 was the number one console.
Though NPD ceased giving out hardware figures, Microsoft wasn't shy about saying the Xbox 360 was the number one console.

However, the new system didn't stop the Xbox 360-exclusive Halo 3 from being the top game in the land, even when put against multiplatform games like Madden NFL 11 (360, PS3, PS2, Wii, PSP) in second and Dead Rising 2 (360, PS3, PC) in third. In fourth place was NHL 11 (360, PS3), followed by FIFA Soccer 11 (360, PS3, PS2, PSP, DS) and Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep (PSP). Coming in seventh was Mafia II (360, PS3, PC), with Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions (PS3, 360, DS, Wii) falling in eighth, Metroid: Other M (Wii) in ninth, and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (360, PS3, PC) bringing up the rear.

The month's sole bright spot was accessories, which saw sales increase 13 percent to $180 million. Frazier credit this in large part to the PlayStation Move, which saw each of its configurations finish in the top 10 accessories chart (which was not provided). The best-selling accessories for the month, however, remained the Xbox Live 1,600-point card and the $20 PlayStation Network card.

@Toysoldier34 I personally prefer the feeling of the good ol' dual thumbsticks. The first FPS I ever played was Halo on the original XBOX. I've tried playing PC shooters, and I'm just... not a big fan of them. Some of my friends are mouse/keyboard people, but seriously, I just can't get use to it.

@Toysolder34 I'm not a big PC gamer although I believe that they offer the best experience in MMO and RTS thats mainly when I game on the PC. I play FPS every now and then but I believe my game collections is a variety. I like to try new things and give other genre a chance. Unfortunately from my experience dealing with COD players. They believe COD is the best thing to happen to gaming since slice bread and they are quick to bash any FPS and automatically compare it to COD. This New Generation of gaming is disgusting. Although yeah I gamed on PC before playing COD and its no joke. Although I love my controller =D

@Colonel-Snake If only 360 fanboys realized how much better FPS is on PC they would never go back. The amount of speed and accuracy with a mouse is substantially better. It is like have your sensitivity on the lowest and highest settings for a 360 shooter at the same time. You can look around as fast as you can move your arm and be as precise as your hand can move, joysticks aren't horrible but the cant compare for shooters. If you are stubborn you can still play PC games with a 360 controller, I play platformers with a PS3 controller on PC only because I have an extra. But in the very least you can have graphics and frame rates console games can't match.

@Toysoldier34 Yea I agree thats why I see Guerrilla Games is still trying to figure a way out to balance Move Players with Dual Shock players because I heard Playstation Move is insanely accurate. Although apparently you need skill to be good with it because I heard it takes a lot of practice to be good with Move. At least people on my friend list enjoy it for Mag but they always told me you need to practice with it to get the hang of it. Yea the 360 apparently is the market for FPS. I seen the preorders for Black ops and they are beating the PS3 in preorders 2:1 thats just insane.

Is it really hard to understand that game sales are down from recent years, and will continue to show losses compared to recent years performance, BECAUSE PEOPLE ARE BROKE! STOP BELIEVING PACHTER PEOPLE! I want A LOT of the new games coming out in the next couple of months, but this economy has killed my wallet. I am sure I am not the only one. Also, people who play mostly one genre would try other genre's, but the money isn't there anymore, even for the hardcore. I am buying only one third of the games I usually buy yearly. It's is not just the money though, quality of some of this years releases leaves a lot to be desired. Also, I think a lot of the hardcore are being turned off by the 'accessibility' trend. It's really no surprise.

So people must really love Halo for the 360 to keep outselling the PS3. I'm not a huge fan of either system's exclusive titles, but I'll remain satisfied with the console that has blu-ray, won't get the red ring of death, and still has the multi-platform games that make up most of my gaming interests these days.

I'm not a fan of any of this motion stuff that Sony and Microsoft are planning to bombard us with. I don't wanna have to move furniture back and forth and dance around to play games. Video games are supposed to be a relaxing time in my life. I'm sure some of the motion games will be fun to play once or twice, but there's no way I'll ever buy this stuff. I will stick with my stick. Sexual inuendo only halfway intended....

Another sales report article means another page for all these people to hype and cheer for thier console! I swear, with all the undying, blind loyalty some of these people have for a video game system they better be getting royalties for every unit sold.

@Colonel-Snake Close, you got my point exactly but I wasn't subtle enough. The fact that the PS3 has variety is the reason it does well while many Americans only play shooters which is sad. Believe me I know all about this and I have played all the best games out there for PS3. Though I tend to keep my shooters on PC. Funny that people love the 360 for shooters but I can almost guarantee that most have never played a shooter on PC. None of the people on 360 that call themselves pros at MW2 would stand a chance against a team with mouse and keyboard and that's something they need to realize. You would think if all they are interested in is shooters they would be playing on a PC.

@monson21502 I own both a Wii and a PS3 with Move and I assure you they aren't equal. Find a way to play something like the Tumble demo with it and you will find the controls are exactly 1 to 1 and there is nothing on the Wii that comes close. Especially since hardware wise its not even close. The Wii just has motion sensors, so if you could move a Wii mote slow and steady enough it wouldn't really know it. But PS Move is tracked by the camera to tell how close to the TV you are and your movements in real space not just the motion. Try playing Boom Blox and pull things perfectly back towards yourself while keeping the Wiimote relatively still, because half the time it will wig out because the Wii doesn't do a good job of sensing that type of movement. With Move that is what it does perfectly, don't dismiss it without trying. Kinect looks okay but there isn't any solid games for it to be really worthwhile. I hope there's some good stuff coming because it looks promising but it will be an uphill battle because it may have a slow start which isn't motivating for companies to develop good games for a slow moving product. Just look at the first two years of the PS3's life for proof.

@Toysoldier34 To be honest that really applies mainly to the Xbox 360. The PS3 top games however are not really shooters of course COD is the best selling game thats a fact but it is known that the PS3 has a variety of games that should appeal to everyone. Least when I read the article I believe every single game on the 360 top 10 were mainly shooters. The PS3 only had 3 top shooters these year. I agree though the FPS trend is old and we need some variety. Some people believe though America = The world which isn't the case. Only in America are shooters doing well outside of it however its not doing well.

I wonder how much lower the 360 and PS3 sales are if you take out people buying new ones that already own one and need to replace a broken one. I know one friend who has replaced a PS3 and multiple friends who have bought up to 3 Xboxs. I know many of the 360 numbers are repeats, though that number should be lower now-a-days. But the 360 is still suffering badly in the rest of the world that isn't the US. Believe it or not people that aren't American actually like games that aren't only shooters. I live in Washington and Nintendo and Microsoft are right down the street, I know what its like, I want the last gens variety again. Look at the top games for the PS2 and only a few are shooters. The ratio of shooters to other genres is almost completely opposite for this gen.

@VFA-102, your right. i was gonna buy move but read alot of reviews and it seemed like move was really no better then wii with motion plus. so instead of paying 130 or so bucks on a move bundle plus a sub controller i went to a local pawn shop and got me a used wii plus 2 games for 70 bucks. ill buy a kinect 360 system bundle next year if my current 360 craps out since it will be the 3rd year starting in feb 2011.if it dies on me before that then ill send it to get fixed free then buy a stand alone kinect with kinect adventures. 150 isnt that bad when it comes with a game i been wanting to try out

And, we care because? "long silence" I buy games the same no matter the sales being up or down or what some Analyst says. I really have zero care for Percentages and Analyst hogwash. This is what happens in a bad economy and unemployment is near 10% nation wide. Get used to it.

My roomate has Playstation move. Hate to say it, but I'm simply not impressed. As responsive as it is, I still feel the wii nunchuck combo is cheaper and more immersing during gameplay. Looking forward to the kinnect. Same price, more versatility and value. No matter how you stack it, 150 bucks for a controller built for 4 simply out values a camera/controller combo made for 1 at the same price.

Xbox will begin to slip soon and watch PS3 gain more in the sales. Big games coming up and the move will do better then kinect. Even if both are trying to take a share of Nintendos market.

@Crumblet Well not me I rather believe Sony since Vgchartz is known for not being resourceful about most stuff. Vgchartz Undertracked the PS3 by 2million units before. Hell they Undertrack a lot of titles on the PS3 Naughty Dog reported over 3.8mil copies of uncharted 2 while Vgchartz has that undertrack. I'm gonna believe Sony only because Vgchartz has a history of doing nonsense like that. I don't think they are overshooting anything they give the numbers you either believe them or you don't plain and simple. To each is their own I guess.

Good to see Birth by Sleep in the top ten. I didnt think it would make it because PSP isnt selling to well. Halo being #1 comes as no surprise due to the massive amount of Halo fans. I still dont get how MW2 made the top ten.

@Colonel-Snake Wow that is a big difference than VGChartz's. Still, one has to assume 1.5 million is overshooting it, what with Sony themselves stating that statistic and all. I'm more inclined to believe a non-bias source like VGC.

This whole thing sound fishy and most likely manipulated for some very big investors to make some big money, and they can't do it if the hardware isn't performing well... so I am sure this was done for no other reason but number manipulation... if there is no official numbers then no one can come in last.... it's all about last place, that can tank a stock. Man, I'd love to know the truth.

I still want to know how much Birth by Sleep sold, but hooray for it being #6. That's much better compared to when 358/2 Days only made it to the #10 spot at its debut.
