Simpsons Creator Matt Groening "Didn't Have A Problem" With White Actors Playing Black Roles

In a new interview, the cartoonist reflects on the show's struggles with and decisions over representation.

After The Simpsons recently recast Dr. Hibbert with a Black voice actor, Kevin Michael Richardson, show creator Matt Groening has finally spoken out on the bigger shift the show initially had been slow to provide a definitive stance on: A move to longer use white actors to voice non-white characters. Speaking with the BBC (via Deadline), the prolific cartoonist said: "Times change but I actually didn't have a problem with the way we were doing it. All of our actors play dozens of characters each, it was never designed to exclude anyone."

When asked whether he regretted the show's previous silence and slow public deliberation, Groening remarked, "At a certain point it doesn't matter what you say. You're going to be attacked by whoever, you know? We're not going out of our way to comfort bigots. On the other hand, if you do any kind of gesture and people perceive a weakness, you'll be criticised." This comment isn't all that different from past reactions from Groening, which were initially dismissive of the criticism.

Now Playing: 10 More Times The Simpsons Predicted The Future (2020 & 2021)

Earlier in the show's current, 32nd season, The Simpsons recast Carl Carlson with Alex Désert (Better Things, Better Call Saul) in for Hank Azaria. The move was met with a wide spectrum of reactions from fans, from wholehearted enthusiasm to shrugging indifference. Following a much-publicized, lengthy controversy over representation, whitewashing, and stereotyping sparked by comedian Hari Kondabolu's 2017 documentary The Problem With Apu, The Simpsons has opted to either re-cast or, in the case of Apu, seemingly completely phase out the objectionable roles.

In the same interview, Groening--who is currently working on Netflix series Disenchantment--expressed an appreciation for the change taking place broadly in the culture. "We're trying to make it better," Groening told the BBC. "Bigotry and racism are still an incredible problem and it’s good to finally go for more equality and representation."

It's voice acting. You are the racist if you want to identify people's skin color just from their voice.

Does this mean we're going to run around, bitch about and get rid of all of the people voicing white characters that aren't white? I'm not about to try get Phil Lamarr dropped out of a role that he'd do a great job at.

I care more about if the voice fits than who does it. I used to turn on Japanese audio on chinese movies because I often felt the voice work sounded and matched up better.

I think it's far more racist to try to get someone fired from a job that they do well based on the color of their skin.

Genuine question: in the US, would you say you can tell someone's skin colour from their voice? In the UK, there is no way you could, but I suppose the US is more segregated.

@rhovaniel: People say they could but they cannot. Not just the US but pretty much everywhere. They say they are identifying color but they are really just identifying the language, which is culturally influence, and not race. People of any color can learn the culture of another.

If they really want to make a point, it's not the voice acting that should change...it's the writer of the script.

Oh, and it's a cartoon, why would they schedule 30 different VA when 6 works.

Cast a person of color to play a white person? That's OK that's representation. Cast a white person to play a person of color? That's racist. How about we stop the double standard.

The last episode of the Simpsons that was relevant in pop culture can legally buy alcohol now. Weakest of the weak vultures picking at the corpse of a long-dead show. Matt and Trey and Macfarlane are the last of the people who are grandfathered in and don't have to abide by arbitrary rules because a hopelessly single person with blue hair on Twitter was more bitter than normal that day.

Was there outrage in the Leporidae community that Bugs Bunny wasn't actually voiced by a rabbit? Or did extraterrestrials complain that Marvin Martian wasn't actually voiced be a Martian? Do we have to find a talking dog to voice Goofy? This is just asinine....they're cartoons, for pete's sake! Stop being so offended by everything in the world.

@bingoh: This is a ridiculous argument and you know it. None of those examples are people. Second none of those are people who have been historically excluded from media. As a general rule, we don’t make tv and film for cartoon rabbits, aliens, and dogs so they can resonate with the stories and connect with the characters.

@MDK4thewin: Are you saying that a black person couldn't relate to Dr Hibbert previously because his voice was too white?

@fedor: Um, reread your comment. You seem pretty upset for something that doesn't matter at all. It's only a story because of angry little people like you. It's just "angry twitter no lifers" on both sides yelling at each other to make themselves feel special. People with real-life interactions couldn't care less about it one way or the other. Grow up.

No, he didn't have a problem with it. And very few people ACTUALLY have a problem with it today. The woke are trying to eliminate acting as a profession and just shift to documentaries apparently. You will only see people being themselves and anyone trying to portray another person will have to be shot I guess. At some point the woke will find themselves shouting at a room filled only with themselves. They are shrill and annoying and no one really wants to be around them. People would much rather watch old simpsons episodes, with Apu voiced by Hank Azria, and laugh. I'll take this shit seriously when all the male characters voiced by female voice actors have been recast. Until then these whiners can screw themselves right in the woke.

Funny thing is that the people who think a person's skin should decide whether or not they're eligible for a role are racists as they're denying people a role based on their race. I never knew what these people looked like when I watched the show years ago, nor did I care. What matters is a consistent and quality voice for the characters.
