Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time hitting PS Vita

Sanzaru Games bringing action title with touch and motion controls to Sony's new portable this fall alongside PlayStation 3 version.

Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time will not be a PlayStation 3 exclusive after all. Developer Sanzaru Games today announced on the PlayStation Blog that a version of the upcoming platformer is also in development for Sony's PlayStation Vita. The game will launch this fall on the same day as the already announced PS3 version.

Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time will be a multiplatform affair.
Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time will be a multiplatform affair.

According to Sanzaru Games president Glen Egan, Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time for the PS Vita will contain system-specific features that make use of the front and rear touch screens, as well as the device's motion controls. Additionally, the game boasts cross-save support, allowing players to save their progress on either the PS3 or PS Vita version and pick it up on either device right where they left off.

Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time picks up after the events of the 2005 PlayStation 2 game Sly 3: Honor Among Thieves. In the title, Sly travels through time, meeting up with his ancestors across a "wild adventure." It is the first new Sly Cooper title Sanzaru Games has developed, but the studio is familiar with the franchise, having contributed to the Sly Collection.

"Additionally, the game boasts cross-save support, allowing players to save their progress on either the PS3 or PS Vita version and pick it up on either device right where they left off."

Does this also mean you only have to buy the game once to own both the PS3 and Vita versions?

I actually hadn't heard of the Sly Cooper games until I picked up the HD collection for the PS3, and now I'm kicking myself that I missed some of the PS2's best platformers. I'll almost certainly be picking this up. Whether I get it for Vita or PS3 is still open though, but I'll be buggered if I'm buying two versions of the same game. Cross-saving is a pretty useless feature unless you're prepared to pay around 100 euros for the two versions.

Good start now DO MORE. Every GOOD game on PS1, PSP, and PS2 need an Vita port, HD upgrade or Vita specific version. This should be done at a LOW COST. Maybe a way to trade in PS1, PSP, or PS2 games for a discount, even if its just for PSN + people. Sony HAS SO much to get other people onboard yet they do not use it to their advantage. And they wonder why they are behind this go round!!

this kinda game is needed to make people opt for a ps3 in favor of a wii (families in particular, with young children). but more than sly, naughty dog should bring back the bandicoot! that rodent sold systems in the past and it can do it again!

@sssephiroth This is true. Sony can make a deal with the owner of the IP rights OR Sony could buy those IP rights for a cheap amount.

@sssephiroth Sadly Naughty Dog is in the habit of selling their franchises after they do all they want with them.Crash was sold to another developer (that's why it became multiplatform) and after game ratings lowered there hasn't been much heard of him at all. The same with Jak.

Sony may have waited too long with this game as we've seen like 3x Resistance's and 3x Uncharted's in the time it's taken them to get this out. Games like Sly are what you use to combat Nintendo and their huge family line up. They need to sit down and really focus on their "Mascot" roster next generation to give the brand more of an identity. Nathan Drake ain't selling systems anymore.

@maxguevera While the games themselves are fairly enjoyable , when you end up doing something like All Star Battle Royale you see how little variety there is , Kratos , Nathan Drake , Cole , Snake .... generic action hero , generic action hero , generic action hero , generic action hero. For a game that's trying to showcase the variety in Sony they are doing the exact opposite. While those characters are more distinct in their own games and are unique there when you group them all together you see how little variety there is (becoming) for Sony right now. Especially after the loss of Jak & Daxter AND Ratchet & Clank.

@shadowhunter0 I would agree much more so than Nintendo , from what I know MS only has one exclusive 1st party ip yes? I never said MS was better.Really? Nintendo gave the reason to have a (1st party) crossover brawler to begin with , there is a massive amount of variety, have you seriously even played a smash bros. game? You have the more realistic modeling of Link , Samus , Marth , Ike ...the more unrealistic/colorful style of kirby , olimar , lucas ,etc. and the mixes like Fox , pit , etc. there is a massive amount of variety between them , as opposed to the current lineup of characters that , all they have to do is copy/paste the exact model and change a couple details. ''also Sony has more chrs than that'' then why don't they use them? Let's look at the lineup of characters they are using ... fat princess (a character maybe...500 people know/care about?) , Parappa the Rappa (a character Sony has long since abandoned) , Sly Cooper ( I'll give you that one) , and then a bunch of characters that follow the exact same ''white action character'' role. I'm not saying Sony shouldn't make all-stars , but if they are they should make it worth while. Where are Crash , Spyro , Ratchet and Clank , Jak and Daxter , maybe even Sora...over the entire couple generations Sony has a TON of variety with their ip's , but of recent you have to admit that they have a lot of similarity between (appearances) of their game characters , and all stars is just emphasizing that.

I'm a fan of sly cooper for the ps2 and I hope that sly cooper does great on the vita. The game had the same greatness like the Jak series, its one of the top platformer game on the ps2.

I don't really see how this is going to 'save' the vita as everyone says , it is just a port of the ps3 version. If porting a ps3 game to vita ''saves the system'' the vita should be resting easy on MG collection. In order for the vita to be ''saved'' it would need an exclusive sly game. Most everyone that would be interested in Vita owns a ps3 or is about to , so why would they shell out $300+ for a portable when they can buy it for ps3 and play it on a larger screen?

@moviequest14 it isn't a straight up port and who knows they might release together you know buy one and get the other free and what happens when you are away from home you can't play it on your ps3 unless you take it with you and you are still missing the concept you sit at home and play it on your ps3 then save it and load up the same save file on your vita and play it on the go then you come home and continue where you left off from the vita version on your ps3

@shadowhunter0 Oh my mistake , it's a port where you touch the poles to jump to them? Again , noone is gone that long that they'll pay the price of their ps3 over just to be able to take their game with them. On top of that noone will buy a vita that doesn't have a ps3 , they'd rather buy the ps3 instead. So ok,I'll admit defeat , Sly Vita will sell 50 systems to the people that are going to pay $300+ for it because they are too impatient to wait until they get home.Again , why didn't titles like Dungeon Hunter sell the vita's like hotcakes then? What abut mgs collection cross-save? Of course those wouldn't sell systems but people will magically change their minds now right?

^ That being said I don't believe Vita needs ''saving'' to begin with as it isn't doomed at all.

@moviequest14 It is quite possible if Sony doesn't step up their game. They need a lot more sales and they've been very bad so far. The 3DS had been doing much better when it was at the same point the Vita is right now and was also the same price of $250 at the time.

They also need to enable remote play, or at least get it to legitimately work. As far as I'm concerned, it's a crime that Sony misleads and lies about the "game changer" of remote play when it barely works. It's a con.

@shadowhunter0 But none have in-stone confirmed. And the rumored MH portable 3 is no competition for 3g AND 4 on 3ds (for the japanese audience which the mh discussion is always about).

@Kenshin0011 I don't think that the Vita will fail in the sense that Sony will have to stop development of it.That doesn't mean I think it will ''win'' the handheld battle this gen , I'll bet money that Vita will definitely fall short. Really the Vita is exactly the same (position) the psp was in. Same games (for the most part) and everything. So common logic would say it would do as well (except without the global sales since no mh has been announced that I know of).

They need to put a lot of software on the Vita. Good game experiences, if they ported the PS2 library to the Vita, it'd be a huge step forward. Software, more of it.

@KBFloYd A ps3 port will save the vita? Maybe if it was exclusive to the vita , but anyone that is such a big sly fan will probably already have purchased a ps3 and wouldn't pay $300+ for a port of the game they can buy for their larger system.

The cross-save thing is cool but doesn't make much sense to me. To use it you'd have to go out and buy two copies of the same game--Just for different platforms. And who's gonna do that? The only way that would work imo is to make so you buy one copy for one platform, and get a download code for the other platform or something.

@nintendo-naut the fact is though most of the time you buy one version you get the other one free

and there are people who would buy both versions to play it at home on a big screen and to play it on the go or they are a fan of that game

It was only 2 months ago when I played the first Sly game for the very first time. I loved it and bought the whole HD collection afther that. This is truly a trilogy where all of the games are good and each game is just a bit better than its prequel. I will look forward to the release of the fourth game. I'll probably will pick up the Vita version as right now I only have 2 games for it.

Sony, you really aren't helping your systems by making PS3 ports for Vita. Make some MORE exclusives for it.

This is awesome news. My Vita is going to be getting some serious play later in the year with this and Persona 4. Wish they'd had more games like this at launch.
