Some games pay to appear on Conan's Clueless Gamer segments

Horror game Outlast paid $35,000 to be featured on Conan's Clueless Gamer segment.

A source familiar with the late-night talk show's practices said that about a quarter of the games featured on Conan's Clueless Gamer segment were paid endorsement deals.

Speaking with Re/code, a spokeswoman for Red Barrels, the studio behind the horror game Outlast, said that the developer paid $35,000 to be featured on the show.

Conan O'Brien spoke favorably about Outlast, but less so of two other horror games that were featured in the same episode: Parsec Production's Slender: The Eight Pages and Frictional Games' Amnesia: The Dark Descent. Both Parsec and Frictional said that they did not pay to appear on the show.

Recommending it to "young people who can't see well," O'Brien also made fun of Minecraft when reviewing it on Clueless Gamer. Mojang's Daniel Kaplan said that the company did not pay to be featured on the show either.

“These Clueless Gamer segments are not serious reviews nor endorsements—they are strictly comedic sketches,” a show spokesman told Re/code. “We do not believe sponsorship identification is needed. . .Insofar as information regarding ad sales and product integration rates, that is privileged network information to which we are not privy.”

"We did one or two of them [Clueless Gamer reviews], video game companies loved it, they came to us and said, review our game please," O'Brien said in an interview with Anderson Cooper at the Cannes Lions International Festival for Creativity. "I said I'll do it, but I don't want to be held back in any way. They said 'we don't care, as a reviewer you have no credibility,'" he joked. He also admitted that the show had an "integration" with publishers like Square Enix, meaning it paid to feature Tomb Raider on the show.

"I think this whole segment could be renamed 'have your cake and eat it too,' I think that's the name of the game now," O'Brien said, explaining that he believed he got to be funny while making the show money through these integration deals.

After highlighting a totally uninteresting game like Injustice, along with pre-release DLC and a custom in-game Conan character, how could anyone think that they're just pulling these off the shelf?

I still love the segments, just as long as it doesn't become pure promo for junk games. So far they've kept it to relatively interesting stuff, Injustice aside.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Oh, I had a blast playing through the story and it wasn't a bad story be any means. I really want to be very good at the game, but I'm afraid I don't have the time and perhaps patience to become a master. Maybe when I get my PS4 I'll get the ultimate edition or whatever it's called. Funny thing about this all is I'm not even that big into fighting games. I got SS4 when it came out and played for a couple of weeks and then put it down and have since sold it. And the same goes for Mortal Kombat except I didn't sell it. And Injustice is the only one I have any desire to return to. Part of it may be the fact that I played the living hell out of SFII and III and MK I,II and III growing up and got my fill.

<< LINK REMOVED >>Hahah. Regarding the backlog, oh I hear ya, my friend. Only a fellow gamer can and will understand the idea of having a backlog of games. Most other people will just radiate animated question marks above their heads, hah. ;)

And about Injustice's flaws, well, they're not really major, at least not for me. Things like a few performance hiccups during intense sequences like special level transitions. But they're not really a big deal. Ironically, my biggest no-no is something quite trivial. And that is, they modeled and rendered a couple of the characters quite poorly (I have the PC Ultimate Edition). Chief of these is probably Wonder Woman. The work on her is just amateurish. But then again, it could just be the limitation of the game. The gameplay itself is actually quite fun for me. NOT perfect by any means, but I love it nonetheless. My friends and I really enjoyed it.

And truth be told, I actually did like the story too. The review here said it's not plausible, and it may or may not be for you. But for me, it was no more incredible than a short parallel-dimension story arc or event in a comic book series or even an animated one. Flashpoint, Age of X, etc. Besides, after reading the Marvel Zombies books for years now, and seeing (SPOILER BEGINS) infected Peter Parker eat both Aunt May and M.J. to the very last disgusting drop (SPOILER ENDS), no story is too unbelievable for me anymore. Heh. And if you HAVE finished the campaign, I'm sure you know what unlikely person/people made the ultimate sacrifice. It was nice. So cynics can come at me all they want, but I just love these kinds of stories.

If someone wanted to know whether some people would be aghast at Conan O'Brien and Red Barrels like they would at Microsoft or Electronic Arts, that person just learned that. ;)

Really, Microsoft and Electronic Arts have terrible public image - people would jump on any reason to bash them. The recent disclosure on their promotional deals happened to give some people very conveniently (self-)righteous reasons to bash them.

This is not the case for Conan O'Brien and Red Barrels apparently. Conan seems to be popular enough that this disclosure would be glossed over by some (namely those that are amused by his brand of humor), and Red Barrels has the "little guy" image to shield themselves with.

I suppose that people who still believe in the notion that "hypocrisy" is bad would be thinking the phrase "double standards" by now when they regard some of their fellow gamers' reactions. ;)

<< LINK REMOVED >>There's a difference between paying to have a game featured in a comedy sketch, and paying to have a game/console given a positive (and ONLY positive) review video while additionally concealing that arrangement behind a contractual gagging order. Nice try though.

I knew they were paid when the games I saw (for the most part) where big titles like halo4, hitman whatever, new tomb raider, gta5, skyrim, resident evil 6 and such. I still enjoy the segment though cause at the end of it all he gives the games bogus "score points" by making body gestures or sounds or weird stuff like that which basically means nothing.

Again, like Microsoft & EA, it's not the idea of getting paid to showcase a game that's the problem; it's when you say/give an impression that you're giving an honest review/evaluation of a game, and you leave out/lie about whether you've been financially compensated by that company. Is this hard to understand? BE HONEST/FORTHRIGHT...*smh*

In this instance I'm not bothered by it. Those skits are pretty funny and whether the game company paid to have their game shown or not is irrelevant. It's not like Conan O Brien knows much of anything about videogames. And it's not as if someone out there is basing any purchases of a game based upon his recommendations anyway. If this happened with more legitimate reviewers on game magazines and websites then it could be an issue, but to have their game shown and then just made fun of, I'd say is relatively harmless in that manner.

I'm just surprised that they weren't all paid.

He's been doing these for a while now, it's getting harder to believe that he's clueless about games. Nevertheless he does sometimes ask good questions, challenging a lot of gaming tropes that don't really make sense. I like to ask questions when I see my friend playing a game, "why are you killing those trolls? They were just chilling out in their cave & then you came into their home & started killing them. Aren't you supposed to be the good guy?"

It feels like this article was written to jump on the current "paid reviews" controversy. Watch ANY one of these videos and you'll see it's all just him being silly, I've never seen one say a game was good or bad.

I like how advertising something that has been going on forever is now like some sort of taboo and needs to be reported on 24 7. Anybody who dosen't think things like this are happening all the time and from ALL companies is naive.

See, the difference is you expect talk show hosts to be total shills and everything appearing on their show, from product placement to hollywood actors showing off their newest trailers to be advertising.

The fact that he is only paid for some is a surprise to me since i was under the impression that he was paid for every review seeing as his reviews are on a popular tv show. And besides he is obviously not a professional (or amateur for that matter) reviewer. He gets a game and uses it for a comedy segment.

In short this example does not excuse the recent leak EA and Microsoft have been found guilty of paid/biased reviews.

Sure Conan should definitely take steps to be more transparent but i don't think anyone can really compare the 2 scenarios and say they were the same thing therefore secret youtube paid reviews should be excused. It's just a smokescreen.

I dont care. Fck advertising, but it keeps TV shows and documentaries and movies going. So on the one hand its evil, immoral, sht, grose, bad for you and you shouldn't listen to a lot of it because it subconcsiously screws with your head , but on the other hand it pays for things we like.

Why anyone listens to things like Bill O ' Reilly however i have no idea and advertising is spent on sht grose programs to it seems. Why anyone listens to that guy or watches anything hes on , is mind boggling to me.

I assumed all games featured in that were paid advertisement. I'm actually kinda surprised that some of them weren't, to tell the truth.

Anyway, companies paying for this kind of exposition in the mainstream media is totally ok to me. What is shameful is what happened in Machinima where they wanted it to be under the covers. Seriously that's PRECISELY the thing that every paranoid commenter accuses reviewers of doing and Microsoft just goes ahead and does it. Really stupid move.

<< LINK REMOVED >> You speak absolutely no sense though. On one hand you say 'It's okay to me for companies to pay for advertising', then you condemn Microsoft for doing so. The reason being that they didn't make it public knowledge? Funny how this, and many other industry practices (EA BF4 exposure for example) have come to light because of the whole Microsoft-Machinima debacle, otherwise this wouldn't be public knowledge either, and would continue to be shady deals until someone blew the whistle. Just because you assumed something doesn't mean the company was sitting there with a loudspeaker announcing publicly how they go about promotion of their products, underhand deals or otherwise. Typical double standards idiot just to bash Microsoft like the sheep you evidently are. No companies are bulletproof, you'll be hard pressed to find a business that doesn't do what is in it's best interests regardless of what is right and wrong. Wake up to the real world boy. You're the kind of person who'll comment on the Sony paid promotion campaign article (when it hopefully comes to light soon) with 'Ah, but Microsoft are worse because no 1080p or 60fps, iz a brick, .....DRM.....blah blah AND THEY DID IT FIRST'.

P.s I don't even own an Xbox One (yet), and am actually the (slightly regrettable) owner of a PS4. But blind Sony snobbery (or just general idiocy on your part) must be called out and burned at the stake.

Duno, man, I'm totally neutral on the Sony/MS debacle (by buying neither of these overpriced cup holders until they have a worthy -- not microtransaction ridden -- game for me to play in them). @asthickaschris @GasparNolasco Yeah, marketing can be rough, but some practices are still shady and unethical. Those happen sometimes and it should be in our interest as consumers to frown upon then instead of applauding. I'll not go further on this because you seem to either be on denial or have no idea what you're talking about.

Oh man, you got me there! I'm terribly sore about missing out on those awesome launch console exclusives like... Dead Rising 3 and... Ryse? Or Knack? Don't get me wrong, as I said I will probably buy one of these machines when they get a good game library, maybe a couple of software updates, a price drop or two. I don't have "faith" in platforms -- seriously, grow out of that kind of behavior! Defending brands and platforms is stupid, and so is to jump in and buy an useless console with absolutely nothing worthy to play in it.

But whatever, dude. I have no interest in convincing you. You sound too desperate and sheeplike right now. Arguing with brand loyalists is like arguing religion anyway. Good luck with your new console, I hope you have lots of fun doing whatever you plan on doing with it... Watching Netflix or talking on skype, maybe.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> My point is it's business. It's how the world works. Right now by interacting with this article we're causing ripples far further reaching than this simple exchange of words. In terms of revenue, attracting new streams of income and bringing in more people to add to this cycle which will help Gamespot keep growing as a site. Now apply that to whatever it is that you have faith in, which I'll assume is PC judging by your blatant disregard for awesome console exclusives that you're sore about missing out on deep down. All these companies by comparison you think are squeaky clean, are not, and will act in the best interests of themselves, whatever the moral grey area, so you just end up sounding like an idiot blasting one company in particular when in reality it happens all the time, and will continue to happen, even amongst the companies you might hold in high regard, so please, kindly retract your head from your rectum. You think that Microsoft are 'naughty' for offering a behind the scene promotion to improve the image of its product, grow up, cause that's exactly what the purpose of the games displayed on the show in question is for. To help sell the damn thing. Which you believe is okay business practice, outlining some severe double standards as previously stated. And as for defending this multi-billion dollar company, it certainly doesn't need me to defend it, you seem to misinterpret I'm discussing business practice as a whole being so much uglier under that surface that there's no point attempting to make one company out to be worse than the others, and your narrow-mindedness irritated me. In the end we, the consumers, are big businesses play-toys, and we just gotta deal with that for now. I for one however enjoy spending my time playing games, so i'm happy to leave the companies to it, and throw money at them for quality experiences IMO across my PC, past-gen, PS4 and in the near future Xbox One, and hope these feelings don't stem from years of brand loyalty and marketing magic, and are actually conscious decisions of my own free will.

And jumping to conclusions? "You know full well you take money on a weekly basis from publishers to sustain yourself! " Oh, the irony. Really do make sure to follow my directions above regarding your posterior
