Sony closes Wipeout studio

Liverpool developer shut down after nearly 30 years; studio was reportedly working on "dramatically different" Wipeout and Splinter Cell-style game for PlayStation 4.

Sony Liverpool, the company responsible for creating the Wipeout franchise, has been closed. An update on the firm's Facebook page today confirmed the closure after nearly 30 years of operation, effective immediately. It is not clear how many staffers were affected, but Eurogamer reports that Sony will attempt to relocate those impacted to other studios.

Sony Liverpool is no more.
Sony Liverpool is no more.

In a statement provided to the site, Sony explained that it decided to shut down Sony Liverpool after a regular review found that changes needed to be made to remain viable in an "increasingly competitive marketplace."

"It has been decided that Liverpool Studio should be closed," reads a line from the statement. "Liverpool Studio has been an important part of SCE Worldwide Studios since the outset of PlayStation, and have contributed greatly to PlayStation over the years. Everyone connected with Liverpool Studio, past and present, can be very proud of their achievements. However, it was felt that by focusing our investment plans on other Studios that are currently working on exciting new projects, we would be in a stronger position to offer the best possible content for our consumers."

The studio was established in 1984 as Psygnosis, before being picked up by Sony in 1993 and rebranded. The firm developed launch titles for every PlayStation format ever released. Most recently, Sony Liverpool developed the warmly received PlayStation Vita game Wipeout 2048.

In addition, Sony Liverpool is home to Sony's European quality assurance outfit. This division was not affected by the closure of the Wipeout studio.

Eurogamer reports that the firm was at work on multiple titles for the PlayStation 4, including a new Wipeout entry and a Splinter Cell-style action game. The new Wipeout title reportedly had been in development for 12-18 months, and was to be "dramatically different."

As for the Splinter Cell-style project, this game supposedly began its life as a gangster-style title before morphing into something resembling the popular Ubisoft franchise. It also reportedly used motion capture technology similar to that used by Team Bondi for L.A. Noire.

The Wipeout games were the reason they sold the Playstations. I even taken the time to download and play the first Wipeout game on the PSN because it's great! It does come as a shocker!

Shadow of the Beast was probably the game that had the biggest impact on me when I first saw it on the Amiga. I don't really care for Wipeout, but it breaks my heart to see these guys go...

30 years! That's simply amazing.... and sad that it won't continue in it's current state anymore. Here's hoping those affected find employment soon. Being out of work just plain sucks.

Thank you Psygnosis / Liverpool for giving this gamer so many memorable moments with games/series such as Assault Rigs, Colony Wars, Destruction Derby, Roll Cage, and Wipeout. Hope the employees find a new home where their ideas can flourish.

Terrible news. I enjoyed every Wipeout title I've ever been able to get my hands on. I never enjoy hearing that any studio has bit the dust, but Liverpool is one I hoped to never see go. Best of luck to all the staff after almost 30 great years.

Such a shame. Sad that the parent companies woes are filtered down to individual studios. Every week it seems another studio shuts down while the parent company and execs continue to reap off the benefits.Once you Become an independent developer. STAY an independent developer. I hope everything works out for those employees.

I am definitely a Sony fan, but I can honestly say this closing doesn't affect me in any way whatsoever. Wipeout was a tired and wore out game and F1....what can I say it's F1.

@essam24 for ur infomation, no computer can have 1 processor going 15ghz. Even with gold plating- it has to be over clocked to go 8ghz. The issue is that the material that conducts electricity can only cycle through the processor @ at a certain speed. We would have to either over clock or go to a different part of the galaxy to find metals that allows processors to go faster than 3.5 ghz. The common way to get processors to run faster is adding mini processors that run n parallel with each other. (see Intel i7)

@awheaten @essam24 His data is obviously wrong. Intel has the world's most advanced 22nm manufacturing node process right now and all their CPUs top out at 4.9-5.0ghz with overclocking. Nominal stock speeds with CPU boost without overclocking are around 3.8-3.9ghz.

PS4 will not have any CPU faster than 5ghz. Instead, Sony will ditch the horribly inefficient and slow Cell for a modern architecture, either a new one from PowerPC or go with an Intel OR AMD PC chip that will smoke PS3.

@essam24 More like 3-4 Ghz processor at most, paired with at best a mid-range generation Radeon HD7000 series, that will be lucky to exceed the specs of HD7850. I am sure it will be a great console but your specs are way off (except for the Ram).

@BestJinjo @essam24

But PS3 is already clocked at 3.2Ghz why make the PS4 to have merely more powerful processor at 3.5,4Ghz?!

9-15Ghz sounds about right for PS4.

Ram at least have to have the same amount as the sega europa-r arcade system board which is at 8GB it would not be much of a next gen console if the most budget priced laptop can now get 4GB of ram.

I expect some kind of an alien technology spec from PS4 like it happened to PS3 6 years ago. (compared to the PC spec at the same time)

I'm not into the computing stuff much but when you need your product to last for at least 5 years you need to give it some serious firepower just in case the PC tech is going so fast ahead like there is no tomorrow.

@Good-Smurf @essam24 There is nothing alien about PS3. It was slower than the equivalent PC at the time but Sony took a $300-400 loss per console and sold it for $599. Specs wise, GeForce 8 was 2x faster and Athlon 64 and Pentium 4 chips were faster than the Cell for games.

Compared to modern processors, Xbox360/PS3 are a extremely slow. Here is from a technical analysis of Xbox360 (Xenon) and PS3 (Cell) around their launch:

Xbox360 CPU ~ 3 Power PC cores with 2 threads each = SLOW"the real-world performance of the Xenon CPU (Xbox360) is about twice that of the 733MHz processor in the first Xbox. Considering that this CPU is supposed to power the Xbox 360 for the next 4 - 5 years, it’s nothing short of disappointing. To put it in perspective, floating point multiplies are apparently 1/3 as fast on Xenon as on a Pentium 4."http://gprime.net/board/showthread.php?t=5989

PS3 Cell CPU ~ 1 Power PC Core with 7 sub-units called SPEs = SLOW

"The Cell processor doesn’t get off the hook just because it only uses a single one of these horribly slow cores; the SPE array ends up being fairly useless in the majority of situations, making it little more than a waste of die space. The other point that has been made is that even if you can offload some of the physics calculations to the SPE array, the Cell’s PPE ends up being a pretty big bottleneck thanks to its overall lackluster performance. It’s akin to having an extremely fast GPU but without a fast CPU to pair it up with.

http://gprime.net/board/showthread.php?t=5989

Comparing CPUs based on Frequency/Clock speed is wrong. That's not how CPU design works. Imagine you have hired 10 new hires working at McDonalds and they can make 10 burgers every 5 minutes. Now, take 10 experienced McDonalds employees into the kitchen and they can make 30 burgers in 5 minutes.

You need to know how many "burgers" or instructions per clock cycle a CPU can compute. For example Core 2 Duo E6400 2133mhz >>>>>>>> Pentium 4-D 3.8ghz.

This is because 1 CPU can do more work per clock operation. You can have 2 CPUs one clocked at 3.2ghz and another at 3.2ghz and one is 50% faster.

That's EXACTLY what will happen with PS4. It will have a much faster CPU architecture that can perform more functions/calculations/instructions per clock. 4 Modern AMD or Intel CPU cores will be WAY WAY faster than 7-core Cell Processor in the PS3.

From Metro 2033 developer:

Digital Foundry: How would you characterise the combination of Xenos and Xenon compared to the traditional x86/GPU combo on PC? Surely on the face of it, Xbox 360 is lacking a lot of power compared to today's entry-level "enthusiast" PC hardware? Oles Shishkovstov: You can calculate it like this: each 360 CPU core is approximately a quarter of the same-frequency Nehalem (i7) core. Add in approximately 1.5 times better performance because of the second, shared thread for 360 and around 1.3 times for Nehalem, multiply by three cores and you get around 70 to 85 per cent of a single modern CPU core on generic (but multi-threaded) code. Bear in mind though that the above calculation will not work in the case where the code is properly vectorised. In that case 360 can actually exceed PC on a per-thread per-clock basis.

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-tech-interview-metro-2033?page=4Therefore, 3 Cores in Xbox360 based on the same PowerPC architecture as 1 core in PS3 = 85% of 1 modern CPU core in PCs today.

A 3.0ghz 4-core AMD or Intel CPU would be 4x faster than PS3's CPU by today's standards. I expect a 3.5-4.0ghz AMD CPU in the PS4, possibly 4/6 or 8 cores though.

I was doing a quick research over them, they were sooo much better when they were just Psygnosis, when joined Sony it was just wipeout and a F1 franchise. It really is sad news, to close a studio with 30 years of history, must be like the death of an old friend to them, and probably not all the devs in there will be relocated, and people loosing jobs is never a good thing.

But even though it's kinda heartbreaking, on a capitalistic view Sony did today what any other company would have done years ago, these franchises which they were working with really didn't appeal to many, in fact it was kinda miserable, the last Wipeout sold around 160 thousand units only, meanwhile other studios were working with things like God of War and The Last of us, that are like atomic bombs for the market.

@Reuwsaat I completely agree. People are just bashing Sony on Facebook over this matter, disregarding the fact that as Studio Liverpool, they only made two games (and many sequels). Studio Liverpool probably spent a lot of money on F1, but just didn't meet the sales quota over the years, while the latest Wipeout for the Vita just didn't do so well either (same game as the others with very little changes).

Needless to say, SCEI still owns both franchises just as they do from other defunct studios, so the games are definitely not dead, just on-hold until further notice. We'll have to wait and see where the game directors, designers, artists, etc, go and what they are involved in. That shall pretty much or should explain Sony's plans for its Studio Liverpool closure.

To all the haters, Studio Liverpool was one of Sony's First Party studios that provided exclusive games. It hurts them more (considering their history and success, if any) than it does does to you.
