Sony Comments On PS4 Pro Sales And How They Compare To Slim Model

"The sales of Pro are stronger than that of Slim, as we see it."

Sales of the PlayStation 4 Pro are off to a solid start, apparently. Speaking today during Sony's latest earnings briefing, CFO Kenichiro Yoshida discussed how sales are coming along. Yoshida said sales are meeting or "maybe" exceeding expectations.

No Caption Provided

"PS4 Pro is running as we had expected, as we assumed, but Pro maybe is doing more than we anticipated," he said (via DualShockers). The executive reportedly added that PlayStation VR had an impact on PS4 Pro sales, with people apparently wanting to pick up the more-powerful PS4 to use PSVR.

Also during the call, Yoshida said PS4 Pro is selling better than the Slim model. "The sales of Pro are stronger than that of Slim, as we see it," he said.

As for PSVR, Sony said sales of the virtual reality headset are "in line" with expectations. PlayStation executive Jim Ryan said Sony was expecting to sell "hundreds of thousands" of units at launch.

The $400 PSVR launched in October, with the $400 PS4 Pro going on sale in November. The new Slim model ($300) debuted in September. Earlier this week, Sony announced two new $500 PSVR bundles.

Don't make me laugh!

Everywhere I look around the PSVR is a swing and a miss.
I only know a couple of people who got it and most of them are still not convinced or regret getting it...

PS4 Pro sell well cause people EXPECT games to run better on them.

In a way, the poor rendering, bad FPS and barely acceptable gameplay of the latest titles and those to come on the "original" PS4s made the PS4 Pro sell well.

It's as if they sort of did it on purpose pushing games to new boundaries BEFORE releasing the new hardware to create needs and boast sales.

Well played Sony!
But, let's be honest, I doubt it has to do with VR which so far is not very impressive as there's only RE7 supporting it like it should.
Other titles look more like tech demos than real appealing games.

@silv3rst0rm: I've heard mostly good things from Pro owners and tech sites like Digital Foundry. Either way, for the money the Pro is actually a very good bit of bang for your buck.

@titang1: At the moment, it's kind of 'meh' - I've yet to see anything which would justify selling your old PS4 to buy the Pro. The one game I have that actually does a 2160p resolution doesn't really show the same level of impact that I saw just from the addition of HDR to it. Even on a 55inch screen, going from 1080 to 2160 doesn't seem that jaw-dropping.

Of course, if you don't own one and you're in the market for one, then it's a no-brainer, but the problem with over 50 Million units sold is that that demographic is a pretty small one..

@TwinStripeUK: I can understand having a "meh" attitude if you already have a PS4, but for first time buyers it's kind of a no brainer, especially since it enhances games in 1080p as well.

As for 4K resolution, 4K doesn't mean a thing unless you've the graphics to back it up, which is why 4K shines on PC and is ho-hum on consoles, BUT, given the price and what the Pro has shown so far it's still the best option for first time buyers, especially those with 4K TVs.

I've heard people say The Last of Us Remastered looks incredible in native 4K, and that's a remastered PS3 game lol

@titang1: The comment about TLoU:R is especially funny when (according to Digital Foundry):

'From a second play-through of the game at 30fps, we've noticed no other visual differences; textures, ambient occlusion and effects are entirely untouched.'

Which means that TLoU:R in 4K looks... like TLoU:R in 1080p! Of course the fact I think it's an incredibly overrated game probably doesn't help...

As for the enhanced modes, it's very much case-by-case - ESO looks absolutely horrific in 1080 Enhanced because it introduced some weird motion-blur nonsense that really doesn't play nicely with HDR and makes it look like you've just over-medicated. The same thing in 2160/30 looks much better, although if I'm honest I don't play it in that mode because it looks significantly better, but more just because I can.

For me, Horizon: Zero Dawn is probably going to be the clincher, as it's version (the 'checkerboard' take) looks to be the standard going forward for the Pro, and it's the first game to have it as a consideration as early in it's development as it did (ME:A is probably the next one). I know RoTR does 'checkerboard' but that was very much a bolt-on after the fact and it looks gorgeous no matter what you play it on.

So far though, as I've said, it's really not done an awful lot to impress me. I don't know whether this is just because the games I've got that take advantage of it really don't click with me, but at no point have I felt the need to call someone and say 'Come over here and check this out' which I've pretty much done with things like the initial transition to 1080p, HDR, 4K Blu-Ray etc.

So maybe time will tell?

I think the change was worth it even though I have a regular PS4 which is now used by another family member. BF1, Tomb Raider, Uncharted to mention a few looks gorgeous in 4k checkerboard!

@titang1: True that but I'd be curious to see the market shares of who are "1st time buyers" and who are "upgrading" their current hardware (PS4).

As much as it's a "no-brainer" to buy Pro if you don't have a PS4, making us think this is where most sales come from, I wouldn't be surprised to learn that actually a very large share of it comes from people diving into the "upgrade" plan more than actual "newcomers".

A big part of the "Gamers" must already have their consoles in their living room by now, 3 years down the road.
I don't know a lot of people who were still "stuck" on PS3/Xbox360 this far into what they used to call "Next gen".

All my friends who got a PS4 pro did it for the "Upgrade".
I don't know anyone near or far that got a PS4 pro as a first PS4 experience...

Still tempted to pick up a Pro at some point, but it's no rush.

Part of me is tempted to scratch that idea and get a VR headset for PC when Resident Evil 7 gets the VR patch.

Xbox Scorpio comes out this Holiday, comes with a UHD Blu-ray player (only console to do this), will support high end VR (Occuls Rift), will support Augmented Reality and is 40% more powerful than the PS4 "Pro". Save your money, the Scorpio is the clear choice for the next 4-5 years for high end console gaming and high end home theater experience.

@asiel_code_7: There's not really an argument. If you reread your post, there's at least 3 things you said that aren't true. And you might want to look up what haggling means lol. How bout this: Scorpio will be a great system. In my opinion it will only be marginally better in real life comparison of third party games, much as the current gen is. I'm not trying to be nasty... just throwing my opinion out there and correcting some facts. People correct me all the time when I post an error and I appreciate it. Didn't mean to strike a nerve!

@asiel_code_7: I have said it before and I will say it again. People expecting the Scorpio to provide anything more than higher resolutions will be sorely disappointed. These consoles still have to cater for the original consoles and developers seem intent on using the extra power to push for higher resolutions instead of better graphics settings unfortunately.

@shortmaneighty2: Lol, this is simply not true. Stupid argument. It will be the same as with PC games, which can be played at different graphics settings: Scorpio will be ultra high, xbox one low, ps4 pro compared to scorpio at best will be "Medium" and "high" in some few cases...

@zisek: Let's be honest, It isn't a stupid argument. I am sure Scorpio could run games at high/ultra settings but NOT at 2160p. The majority of developers are going to push for higher resolutions rather that higher settings. I suppose we are both speculating, But I can't see Microsoft running many games at 1080p after pitching the Scorpio as a true 4K games machine. Which means they will probably be the same settings I.e lighting/Textures with 2160p resolution.

@asiel_code_7: Not too long ago it was reported Microsoft removed the "VR Ready" advertisement for Scorpio, so VR for Scorpio is either something MS is considering to a lesser degree now, or the option won't be available.

And it's not CONFIRMED the Scorpio will have a UHD Blu-Ray player. It makes sense that it would, but then again MS could very well be advertising this thing to hardcore gamers only and exclude it based on that alone.

Then there's always the price to consider. Chances are the Pro will get a price drop before Scorpio releases, so if customers see a $300-$350 console on shelves next to a $500-$600 console, it's quite possible the majority will gravitate towards the cheaper option.

@zisek: True, but it's also CONSIDERABLY weaker than even the Pro, and if the Pro drops down to $350-$300 that's almost HALF what the Scorpio will cost.

Math man, math. People want powerful consoles, but there's a reason people don't run out and spend $500-$600 on consoles. The majority of console owners are a frugal bunch.

@zisek: Xbox one S isn't even remotely comparable to the Pro. The Pro offers pretty much what the scorpio will offer, at a cheaper price, and slightly better native resolution and maybe fps, but we don't know the cpu yet.

@joshrmeyer: "The Pro offers pretty much what the Scorpio will offer" - LOL, not even close. The power gap is even greater than the gap between Xbox One Vs PS4, much much greater, you can't compare them. Just the Scorpio's GPU with 6TFLOPS vs the Pro 4TFLOPS is a 43% difference, not to mention the memory bandwidth, and if you add up backwards compatibility + UHD Blu-Ray + The Elite controller then your statement becomes false. The PS4 Pro is a joke compared to Scorpio, power-wise. If you like ps games then you should just stay with your normal ps4.

@zisek: 6 tflops vs 4.2 tflops= 30% difference 1.84 vs 1.3 tflops = 30% difference; memory bandwidth: xbox=68gb/s, ps4=176gb/s.... scorpio= 320gb/s, Pro=218gb/s. My point was they will both do what they're intended to do: 4k native on some games, upscaled on others. Hate to rain on your parade, but it'll be just like this gen but reversed, with ps4 pro having a 1 year head start and more then likely half the price. And I am staying with my ps4 for now. No 4k tv, so very little point... same with scorpio.

@sellingthings: Ah, well I guess that makes sense. To be honest though, I don't think VR will make big waves regardless of the platform. Will Scorpio do it better? Sure, but in order to get a VR experience on Scorpio we're talking about buying a $500-$600 console then getting a $600-$800 VR headset, that's anywhere from $1,100-$1,400 for a Scorpio and VR, and since consumers tend to speak with their wallets (which harkens back to part of the reason the PS4 stomped the XB1 to begin with), getting a VR experience for hundreds cheaper is likely the avenue customers will take, IF they care about VR to begin with.

@dlCHIEF58: Then I must have missed that article on the VR, and that could still very well mean it's more of an afterthought at this point, but apparently you missed the article where Phil said it's not a for sure thing the Scorpio will have a UHD drive, and since it hasn't been confirmed yet then there's no reason to believe it's fact. Please try to keep current, I mean, since you're referencing articles and all.

@asiel_code_7: Occulus Rift support is an assumption, and Playstation has supported Augmented Reality since the PS2 Eye Toy, this is nothing new or special.

Scorpio is going to be faster, absolutely, but 4-5 years? Maybe 3 at most before Sony answers.

Also UHD BluRay is a nice feature but its more of a novelty right now. Very few movies are actually released in 4k yet. By the time they become more common, the next iteration of consoles will be here.

I understand wanting to grasp at any feature that makes your console of choice look better (we fought this same battle in the PS3 era with its included BluRay while 360 only had DVD)

Or just get a PC that will be more powerful than Scorpio and will have all the Xbox games and buy a PS4 for great exclusives like Infamous, Uncharted, The Last Guardian, Gravity Rush, Yakuza, Nioh, etc. that aren't available on PC.

No need to waste money on an unnecessary product like a Xbox.

@asiel_code_7: there is no use of the power if the developer doesnt optimise the games for it.
ps4 pro sales went good and thats why dev decided to give a patch for it. xbox may be powerful but there are less players on it and same goes to xbox scorpio later. so less developer will optimise their games.

I'm waiting for Lenovo to release their VR headset, then I'll buy a second gtx 1070 and just game on PC with VR. Other than RE7, VR seems gimmicky and not too different from the Wii Sports fad. It has potential, but nothing strong has made use of it yet.
