Sony Exec Admits PlayStation VR May Not Match Oculus Rift in Terms of Quality

"It's more for everyday use, so it has to be easy to use and it has to be affordable."

2016 is poised to be the year that virtual reality really kicks off, as PlayStation VR, Oculus Rift, and HTC Vive are all scheduled to come out this year. Now, Sony Computer Entertainment vice president Masayasu Ito has spoken up to compare the PlayStation 4 VR headset to Oculus Rift, giving Facebook's device the edge when it comes to technical quality.

But whereas Rift (and Vive) require a PC in the $1,000 range, PlayStation VR will work with any of the 36 million PS4 consoles already in the market. It's aiming to be a mass-market device.

No Caption Provided

"If you just talk about the high-end quality, yes, I would admit that Oculus may have better VR," Ito said in an interview with Polygon. "However, it requires a very expensive and very fast PC. The biggest advantage for Sony is our headset works with PS4. It's more for everyday use, so it has to be easy to use and it has to be affordable. This is not for the person who uses a high-end PC. It's for the mass market."

The full Poygon interview goes into a lot more depth on the origins of PlayStation VR and Sony's goals and ambitions for the device. You can read the story here.

PlayStation VR is officially scheduled to arrive in the first half of 2016, though a GameStop executive recently said the release date may be pushed to fall 2016. Sony will hold a PlayStation VR-focused event at the Game Developers Conference next week where we may finally learn the system's price and release date, though this is not confirmed at this point.

In other PlayStation VR news, Sony has announced that children under 12 should not use the device.

I might be getting this for PS4. I dumped PC a year and a half ago for PS4 and have never looked back. Much better FPSer games than on PC ever. Everyone plays at the same fps unlike PC where a maxed out $4000 PC playing some kid on a $800 PC where he is trying to max it out...120 fps vs 6 fps never was fair on PC and that the main reason it has died for anything FPSer.

In other words 'you might be disappointed when you see what made you wait all this time for'. Honestly I think VR was a dumb move by Sony. The rift isn't even going to be a technology hit. VR is just another one of those technology fads that's going to pass for a 2nd time. The 3d TV failed miserably and it wasn't the price point because they weren't even that expensive. One fact remains amongst consumers, no one wants to wear anything on their heads and they're not going to pay all that money just to have one in the household. I've said it from the beginning, now watch how it plays out.

Well should this come as much of a surprise? Its on a console and by the time it comes out the hardware will and really is pretty dated vs the pc. I would hope people would know that there will be a margin between the rift and vive vs playstation VR. If I owned a ps4 i would just be happy to see this running at 720p at 30fps again considering the hardware the console has. You gotta be a realist on this front knowing what it takes to drive both the vive and rift spec wise. Can't wait to pick up a vive, ps4 players just be happy your going to get a taste of it for those who want it. It could be worse and yall could be stuck with that vcr looking thing thats called an xbox one which at least from what i have gathered microsoft is not taking a stab at virtual headsets.

Oculus is $599 which realistically will be $799 by the time you have the option to add everything the Vive has at $799. I"m a tech fan but $800 is too hard for me to justify. If Sony can come in at half that price I'd be pretty jazzed.

@EmperorSupreme: I really don't understand how the PS VR is an option for anyone. Either I'm an enthusiast and want a top device or I don't want to pay to much and get the device to use my smartphone for VR. Why exactly would anyone want to have a crappy version of VR (phones will be better than the PS4 soon) in a closed system?

@ArchoNils2:

That would make sense except I don't think most people have the newest phones to make it work. The other problem is that phones still stink for games.

If you have a brain you would know that the PS4 was underpowered and already outdated on the day of its release. It is barely able to do 1080p so don't expect it to be spectacular at VR especially when compared to the latest new PC tech. The PS4 was never designed for this. Sony would be better off leaving it for the PS5. Do it right the first time or don't do it at all because if they release a half ass product it will kill the future prospects.

Has anyone heard if movies are going to be made for these? Not quite 360 degrees, but whatever degree your neck can comfortably move. Netflix seems like a company that'd be all over this. Even if they were to somehow remaster older movies.

@joshrmeyer: Remastering old movies for VR? Now that would be a neat trick, lol.

Kidding aside, going forward I'm sure we'll start seeing a lot of content similar to what you're describing. Maybe not so much in the feature film department, but I bet we'll see lots of content like this... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H6SsB3JYqQg

@Schwah: That's exactly what I'm talking about! Well, no need really for the full 360 since you'd most likely be sitting on the couch. The wiiU had this out years ago and I was fascinated by the demos. Now if they could do this plus add a 3d effect to it, would be awesome.

Why even bother saying that? You're just giving fuel to the trolls and haters. OBVIOUSLY it isn't going to match the graphical power of the Rift, it's powered by the PC. It's the same as with consoles... Ugh, some times I'd just wish these people'd shut up. They often do themselves more harm than good. -.- Just because it doesn't match the Rift doesn't mean it won't be good, look at the consoles compared to PC gaming, all are thriving.

@sodapoppimpski: Yeah, no. It won't. It will run fine, and I am excited as hell for PSVR and VR in general. It's kinda sad how easily " gamers " are trashing the tech. If I was 11 I'd be pissing myself in excitement.

@Shadowscreem: But I mean... Isn't it obvious that it wouldn't be on par with Rift considering its tied to the PC and PSVR is tied to the external processor and the PS4 itself? I dunno, just seems redundant to me.

All this talk about hardware between all 3 of them, and yet I've never seen an EXPERIENCE that made me go "I want that!" In fact the only one to do just that is Microsoft with the Hololens and it isn't even really VR as it is AR.

Every time I go check out PSVR all they have is tech demo's, just like when Vita released which is scary. Sony will probably have 5-7 tech demo style games, and 1 or 2 actual titles that are neat. It's what comes after that will make me buy VR. If it see's a drought like Vita, I'm staying FAR away from it.

2016 VR will epitomize the wisdom in avoiding gen 1 hardware. However, I extend a hearty 'thank you' to those of you that buy these novelties which will ensure we see improved iterations in the future.

I'm seeing a lot of fanboyism oozing out of this discussion, but please keep in mind we're all better served as consumers and gamers when the major industry players are doing well and competing. With that in mind, this news of a more affordable PlaystationVR headset seems like great news for the future of VR.

I've already come to terms with the high cost of the Oculus and Vive. Sure, the price sucks but user experiences have been fantastic, and this is a technology that needs to prove its efficacy for gaming and other user experiences out of the gate. Doing so will help the entire industry generate the support it needs from developers, additional investors, and ultimately consumers. While PlayStation VR might not be the flagship of the VR industry launch, if it can offer a solid VR experience in a more affordable package how can that be a bad thing? More headsets on more heads.

And I'm sorry, but I'll never understand the console/PC war. They're such different beasts and the costs and benefits are clearly defined. Doesn't the choice just come down to personal preference and budget? A $2000 PC will smoke a console, no shit, but it's also $2000. Where's the argument either way?

that's cool and all, but what about showcasing the software/games that can actually take advantage of this crap? Otherwise these peripherals are nothing more than expensive paperweights.

No surprises here as long as they can keep the price down. Where is stands in terms of experience: Vive > Oculus > PSVR

I don't think a huge group of people are going to care if PSVR is slightly below the performance of the Rift or even the Vive. As long as they support it with games, and the price is reasonable, it might work out best for them in the end.

I think the advantage of PSVR will be the ability for Sony to push out a greater number of games for it.

At this point I'm not really interested in VR at all, though I'd likely go PSVR if I wanted to test the waters. I have a VR capable PC, but I'm not dropping $600 to $800 on fledgling tech.

Even if the actual VR games only run at say 720p or sub 720p levels it could be a great device at the right price being as it runs with PS4. Though another great feature would be play anything on a virtual projector screen in what would appear like a nice theatre room. If I could be fooled into thinking I have a 120" + sized screen in front of me and not having to use my current theater room projector I would buy the product day 1 simply because every few years I have to replace a bulb which can cast $$$. being on vacation or visiting relatives I could just plaug in the wall connect to the internet and play on what would appear to be a bigger than life screen at higher resolutions because no crazy processing power would need to be used.

All those that ever said otherwise were just deluding themselves.

Doesn't take a genius to see that in terms of quality Oculus and Vive have the edge. Especially when combined with a powerful pc. Ps4 and Sony VR could never compete.

What PS4 and Sony VR will have is affordability and (probably) some fantastic software made specifically for the system. It will still be a great VR experience and a quality product too.

No matter. Hopefully that means it will be cheaper and more accessible as a result. No one sensible expects perfection on the first attempt. As long as it works.

You need to get it into a stable position THEN you can worry about everything else. People have praised PSVR as much as they have the other devices. So clearly the quality can't be THAT bad.

That extra box of hardware that Sony are shipping with this may very well be the device's undoing.
